Claws Mail port
Hello,
Claws Mail, (formerly known as Sylpheed-Claws), is a GTK+-based e-mail client and news client for Linux, forked from Sylpheed in April 2001. It was initially the bleeding-edge testbed for new Sylpheed features, but evolved enough to now be a completely separate program. It is light, easy to configure, and easy to use. Claws Mail has an intuitive interface and a lot of features and flexibility. The first release of maemo port is available on garage at https://garage.maemo.org/projects/claws-mail. This version is not completely hildonized but fullscreen is available for main windows. I have only a 770 and this version is not tested on N800. Jean-Luc Biord |
Re: Claws Mail port
thx. I will give it a try on my N800

Re: Claws Mail port
wow - there are lots of configuration options :)
I managed to set up the initial account fine. can receive and send emails :) I tried a few times to add a second account but it won't save with the message "Error - The default inbox folder doesn't exist." In the settings the Default inbox = #mh/Mailbox/inbox this seems to be the same value as the initial account I created also. |
Re: Claws Mail port
Yes, I encountered this problem. To create the other boxes:
1. Add a box by the menu "File | Add mailbox" 2. Choose the menu "Create new account" 3. In tab "Receive" and lineedit "Default Inbox", replace "Mailbox" in "#mh/Mailbox/inbox" by the name of your mailbox created on 1. Claws-mail seems to be a very good mail client and it's usage is pleasant with the windows in full screen. I chose to hide the menubar on fullscreen to increase the visibility. In this case, the toolbar allows to launch the main actions. Many themes are available on the home page on http://www.claws-mail.org/index.php Enjoy |
Re: Claws Mail port
Is this better then Pan as a newsreader? The major flaw of PAN is that if you minimize it, you loose it. You have to kill then relaunch, while it seems that this is hildonized and can have its own icon on the taskbar to switch the tasks regularly.

Re: Claws Mail port
I don't know if it's better then Pan as a newsreader. Try it.
Claws mail is partially hildonized but can toggled to fullscreen and if it is minimized, his icon appear on taskbar and the program can be restored. |

With the size of the screen though I think any email client is going to feel cramped. |
Re: Claws Mail port
I'd like to say that the claws-mail update, 2.8.1-2, is quite impressive. I love the feature set. Thank you!

While having the accounts settings on both I'm not able to send mail with "claws" (smtp errors) the accounts need authentification. Other flaws: - if I set the first account while off line after switching on line I get a message about corrupted mailbox and the only way to get ride off it is to remove the directory ".claws-mail" in "/home/user" - when composing a message the "To" field is behind the on-screen keyboard making hard to correct typing errors So I wiil stick to "sylpheed" hoping it will not disapears to the benefit of "claws" I'm from France and I own a N800 for 2 months (1st experience with tablet) Regards |

About the smtp errors, I don't know - the protocol log (available from the Tools menu) should help; about the corrupted mailbox, I suppose you're setting up an IMAP account, and indeed you get a warning if Claws can't get the folders list. This is now a solvable problem with the latest Maemo release, as you can tap and hold on the mailbox when online, and choose "Rebuild folder tree". HTH, Colin |
Re: Claws Mail port
What I don't understand is how to locally save attachments...
I can't find any save button anywhere :P Great app, btw! |

Re: Claws Mail port
Hi all, I finished configuring my Gmail account and zero problems here, it seems to owrk great (I have not tried to send any message, tough).
The only thing is that I can not figure out how to configure any news (usenet) account, and where to see the groups list, etc. Would someone help me? |

Re: Claws Mail port
Hi all,
Is it possible to change the folder were the mails are stored? I read in a previous mail that you can sync for offline reading but my imap folder is quite huge (~0.5GB) and I would like it to reside in the external memory card. Thanks. |
Re: Claws Mail port
Saturn: yes, but the only way to do that is to move the folder ~/.claws-mail/imapcache on your external memory card, and make a symlink:
mv ~/.claws-mail/imapcache /mnt/where_the_card_is/ ln -s /mnt/where_the_card_is/imapcache ~/.claws-mail/imapcache Do that when Claws Mail is not running :) |
Re: Claws Mail port
 How about the backup? Is that folder move possible also POP-mail because mail folders consume quite a lot memory in tablet? 1 GB SD-card has lots of room for mail!

Re: Claws Mail port
Hi, promising program...
After setting up an IMAP account I had second thoughts and deleted it... The problem I am having now is when I attempt to set up a new POP account the wizard starts, I can and do input into all the menu fields, but when I finish, the app reports that "The default inbox folder does not exist" and does not let me proceed. When I cancel no info is saved but the app opens to the folder view where a folder for the previously deleted account remains. If I attempt to change the current account, no accounts are listed. A restart opens the new account wizard and then it's deja vue all over again. I have uninstalled the app numerous times however, when I reinstall, the previous account folder shows up again with no associated account information. |

I guess I could do the same also for the settings.. Then when I reflash the device with a different firmware and reinstall the application I will only need to replace the file with the 'lost' symlink and everything will be back to normal. Does anybody know which file would that be? Edit: Can someone confirm if it's "~/.claws-mail/accountrc" ? My linux skills are quite limited but managed to go to claws-mail folder and see the files. I noticed that the application is producing also .bak files (which is great if you run into trouble) but wouldn't that be a problem if I move the file and link it? I will give it a try and see what happens! Thanks again for the great application. |

Re: Claws Mail port
Am I right in that it doesn't support IMAP over SSL? It seems to try to connect on port 143, while IMAP over SSL would be port 993.
|
Re: Claws Mail port
from what I know it does support it (you have to configure it in a different tab)

Re: Claws Mail port
Ok got it working. Maybe it's just me, but I had to delete the account and start all over to get to the correct ssl tab. Anyway, apparently it got set up correctly, at least I could see all of the folders on my imaps server. But it wouldn't show the unread message there. And it crashed when I tried to send a message.. and also when I clicked on any of the folders. For now I'll continue to use the built-in email..

Re: Claws Mail port
Done. claws-mail dies when I click the inbox. Before that the view looks as expected. NB: The server (imap) uses subfolders.

Re: Claws Mail port
I just wanted to jump in and say the program is working AWESOME on my N800. This is what I've wanted for SO long. I've used IMAP for years now and won't use a client unless it supports it. The default Nokia client is simply unusable.
I'm using IMAP over SSL, and I just did the symlink trick to put all my mails on the SD card. Its very cool that it supports downloading all the e-mails like IMAP is supposed to do. I did have one question. The 'syncronise' is always greyed out for me. I've looked through all the options everywhere and I'm stumped. I can just keep downloading all the messages by tap and hold. But I was wondering if there's another easier way to do this. Also, I had to add a mistral repository to get it installed on the N800. I really didn't want to do that but the most recent version wouldn't work withoug libaux or something like that. Any place I could offer a donation for this great client to keep the development work going? :) |

To be able to synchronise automatically all folders you're interested in, you have to tap and hold on these folders, and in the Properties, near the end of the page, check "Synchronise for offline use". The next version will have a faster synchronisation, by the way :) Concerning donations, if you want to make one, that's really nice! You can do it so from http://www.claws-mail.org/sponsors.php - you can either choose Paypal, or if you prefer, you can get a mug or shirt from the Cafepress store :) |

Re: Claws Mail port
 Is it possible to move or copy mails fron N800 mail client to Claws-mail? It would be nice to have those mails in Claws also. I would like to use mainly Claws but there's mails in native client and because that I have to use both.

Claws-mail on N770 with 2006OS (problem / solution)
Some possibly useful information: I have Claws-mail 2.8.1-3 running on an
N770 with the 2006 OS (specifically 2.2006.39-14). I downloaded it from https://garage.maemo.org/projects/claws-mail, then tried to install it using "Install from file" in the Application Manager's menu. Result: a message saying it couldn't install because it needed libsm6. I then opened an xterm, did "apt-get install libsm6", and again tried installing. Success! Double tapping on a message won't open it, but selecting it with a tap and then pressing the center button in the scroll pad on the left does. Also helpful: the info about icons under Help, the manual and FAQ at www.claws-mail.org, and the info in this thread (esp. about IMAP folders). A great app, infinitely better than the default email client. |
Re: Claws Mail port
According to this site: http://www.claws-mail.org/maemo/ version 2.9 was released, but I can't find the repository...
Any help? Regards |

Re: Claws Mail port
I'm using it now. I found out about the new release because I kept updating that web page. Anyway, this version includes the fix that Colin made for imaps-with-Citadel-server, which means that it works for me too now. :)
Good stuff. I have claws-mail in the simple-launcher setup, and I keep my existing osso-email setup, which means that the infamous "two guys" in the left column of the Hildon UI will still beep and turn green when there's new mail. But after that I go claws-mail! :D |
