Upgrading to 10.2010.19-1 without OTA, NSU or Flasher

Any one having trouble using OTA or NSU update can use the following method to upgrade firmware to the latest version 10.2010.19-1.

I upgraded from 1.2009.42.11.203.2 directly to 10.2010.19-1.203.1 and I had to download 127 MB data but it will definitely be mush less if you had a higher version. This procedure will also help those with rootfs running low on space.

1. You need root access to perform this. I used rootsh. From terminal run
Code:

sudo gainroot
2. Create a download folder on the eMMC to be used for the downloaded packages instead of the default apt archive folder.
Code:

mkdir -p /home/user/MyDocs/apt-archive-cache/archives/partial
I only did this because I didn't have enough space in rootfs

3. Perform the disto-upgrade
Code:

apt-get -o dir::cache=/home/user/MyDocs/apt-archive-cache dist-upgrade
4. After the upgrade is finished, just restart your phone and you are done.

Note:

I used WiFi to download and it took 7 minutes, but the installation took close to 1 hour.

I had to confirm updating a couple of files during installation, so make sure you check the progress at regular intervals.

I thought I read somewhere on these forums long, long ago during one of the earlier N900 updates that doing a dist-upgrade was not recommended from commandline?

Though I cannot find that post, nor remember the reason that was given :(

Quote:

apt-get -o dir::cache=/home/user/MyDocs/apt-archive-cache
This line doesn't run. I get the Usage display. Should there be a command (update/upgrade)?

I have spent 2 days trying to upgrade my firmware and I was unsuccessful. So it might be unsafe but nonetheless it is the method that worked for me.

So any other method fails I will use this.

type the full command, you are missing
Code:

dist-upgrade
at the end

Make sure you have backed up every thing to memory card and/or a PC,

Only upgraded 17 packages. I'm in North America, is the success of a full upgrade still limited to the availability of the OTA upgrade?

Of course - no OTA, no packages in the repo.
