Smooth video playback gone in 1.2?

I did a completely fresh flash of both 1.2 and eMMC as I didnt have much to worry about losing on the phone.

I loaded on a video that I had on there on 1.1.1 and it played super smoothly under the stock media player.

Under 1.2 it is noticeably choppier.

Any ideas? I did have MPlayer installed under 1.1.1 but never used it. Does it install codecs that might get used by the stock player?

What codec do you want to play? I just tried a few different podcasts, they all seem the same, altough jumping is faster now.

It was an xvid avi and I had unpacked the bitstream as that made playback smooth in 1.1.1

Its OK... sometimes I'm a bit of a dunce!!!

I'd unpacked the bitstream of the original file whilst it was on the N900... the one I copied back across from the PC after installing 1.2 had a packed bitstream still.

Anyway... this does solve the question - "Do I still need to unpack the bitstreams of AVIs in 1.2 for smooth playback?"

Answers yes!

Some AVIs have a packed bitstream which I think has something to do with how the audio is packed.

These files play back jerky.

Open the AVI in the MPEG4 Modifier (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPEG4_Modifier) and it will tell you whether it is a packed bitstream or not.

If it is, click "Unpack", then Save the file as a new name... voila... smooth playback.

That is interesting. I always use mplayer as the standard player is choppy with most files I try.

How long does it take to do this fix on a 90 minute movie, for example?

Well... it is surprisingly quick... about 1 minute for a 90min movie.
