Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with damnshock. If no one complains, and everyone just "goes outside," Nokia continues to **** on us relentlessly. It's pretty clear at this point that they're not exactly timely or prepared - they're behind the competition as far as apps are concerned, and now they can't keep up with their own announcements or release dates. Although it could've happened to any company, their lack of communication is off-putting.

As for me, I love this phone to death, flaws and all. Would be nice to have some new games/apps on it, but it's not that important.

I still love my N900. However, the fact that it does not appear to have the support of big companies like EA games, as well as n8 is already showing to have, makes me worried about the future. Quite frankly, what good is this update of Ovi Store if it is to have a bunch of new applications? Even if we have the Meego running on N900, if it is not officially supported, so why the games / applications would be supported? Grrr .... I love and hate Nokia. :)

I am regretting buying the n900 for this reason, I fear it has no future. iphone and Android are the future and are getting all of the support. Too bad, unless Nokia starts supporting Android it is not going to survive in the next few years... as they don't seem to have competent people working behind the scenes.....

I do love the n900 for what it is, I think maemo developers did a really good job on it.

But I really hate Nokia for pulling the plug on it.. I don't think I'm getting a Nokia phone again, unless they make something completely mind blowing and start being more clear about their intentions about products with us customers.

What are you on about? Have you heard about MeeGo.. and the new Symbian(s)??? Those are getting lots of support from MANY big companies now.. Look at N8 for example.. and look at MeeGo's list of partners.. Nokia doesn't need to run any other OSes like Android.. you do understand that Symbian sells a lot more than Android + Apple Os combined right? And I have a feeing MeeGo will be huge too.. We are mad because Maemo doesn't have a future like those other Nokia OSes...

Re: Where is this damn OVI update?

Again Nokia has made things unecessarily difficult for them.

Why say that the Ovi store is coming on thursday? They could've said that "it is coming in the indefinite future" and everyone replying to this thread would've known, that this is one of those things. We'll just have to sit and wait. Nokia screwed even a simple thing like this up by giving a deadline that they couldn't make.

Oh well, to me all appstores are 99% bollocks. Its the core functions in a phone that make my day.

I would be happy to have Android running on my N900, at least I could get apps for it... Oh well...

I personally do not think Meego will take off, just my feeling. I'll be selling my N900 ... Bye Bye!

okay ill have to say that the n900 is great, of course... its a sh.tty behaviour of nokia with the support. assuming that i was a nokia fan at the beginning of the ngage ( then n95,n96 and the worst n97 (without a gpu omg?! at least the ovi store is good)) i think that it doesnt matter if the ovi store is getting updated or not, this device was definately my last nokia.
but i hope ill still have a bit fun with it :D (as i always had from the beginning)

Re: Where is this damn OVI update?

why bother hassling these guys on Ovi ?

Ignore it, assume it will never go live, just like all the other stuff like flash or whatever.

Sell your phone if you are not hapy with assuming this stuff will never come, cause you are just pissing yourself off. Nokia cant/wont hear you.

Some users here dont care about support, which is fine and for them this phone is the bomb because it allows them to do whatever they want.

But for the rest of us, tell your friends about your geniue experiences with Nokia and then move on. Nokia is not worth your support or time.

Re: Where is this damn OVI update?

Its rather annoying when someone says "if you don't like it, sell it!" because that isn't such an easy option. I spent a bit over 500 euros on this. I don't think I can sell it for even 400 euros now. And if I were to buy a new device, I'd have to pitch in some more.

Simply put, that isn't an answer to the question of how Nokia has indeed abandoned this device. I mean sure PR1.2 is a good improvement but even after this huge improvement that we are so thankful for, you don't get what you would from a 500 euro device!

The phone itself is solid. Its just the software that has received little attention. As someone mentioned it on one of the threads around here, N900 is like Nokia's bastard phone.

putting aside the cost I dont wanna sounds like a fanboy but IMO if i had choice i would buy N900 again :) software is not great indeed but browser, video support, fast CPU and overall freedom that it gives are just incomparable to any device out there

You should be making your purchase decisions basing on the features the device has already, not on the probable features it might eventually get in the unforeseeable future.

This way you won't be disappointed waiting for things that may or may not happen.

True.

Promises can be broken, minds can be changed so purchase for what you can do now and hope for the best later. By all means, you should be satisfied BEFORE purchasing any device and all else is extra.

I purchased the N900 because of what it could do, not because of what it MIGHT do.

Got my money worth already.... :D

That's rather unfair what you are saying... I understand what you mean by that sentence; that we should be buying the phone based on what it can do that way we will not be disappointed. But don't we have a right to be upset if we are promised something and this promise is never delivered on?

It's been about half a year since the launch of N900 and only a week or so ago they got gmail to work, still no ovi store that was promised. plus some other things that I'm kinda tired about ranting about. Yeah yeah, there was this problem and that problem, but at the end of the day as a consumer, I don't care what problems they have. I care that I paid over 500€ for a device, they promised me features and they did not deliver.

It's kind of a bad example, but say someone promises to build and upkeep a website for you and you pay this person. Yeah, he'll get it done, but just didn't say when, didn't say how it would look, is not doing the normal needed update cos this person said upkeep but did not mention how often. Links might be broken and they will be fixed eventually, you just have to wait for it even though you've paid the person already. Are you starting to understand the frustration?

Now - if only they would do something with the store!

In N900 case it's even worse. Nokia has a policy of keeping promises to minimum.
So these were (and are) mostly hopes, expectations and wishful thinking. People got so excited, that reality check is gone. This leads straight to frustration and disappointment.

Actually, fairness has quite a bit to do with it.

It's only fair that they keep up their part of the deal, after consumers fork out 500€ to buy their product.

It's not fair, that they ask us to pay 500€ for a product that they promised would get certain features, and these features are not being delivered.

Yes, life is not fair and reality does bite... But doesn't mean that we should sit back and throw our hands up!

Edit: And by unfair, I mean your sentence that we should buy products that already have features implemented in them when we buy them. That is simply not true, because if we are promised x, y and z features in the future, and we are buying a product based on this knowledge.

You can't sell something to a consumer, promise heaven and sky and then not do it just because you suddenly changed your mind. Again, it's unfair to the person who gave you money thinking that you were going to deliver!

Again, another example (a bit more extreme); you buy a car and you are promised that in the future they will activate the onscreen gps in your car. Suddenly they change their mind, or it's taking them forever. Would you still tell this person that he should've bought the car on what it can do, and not was promised it can do?

I don't get how it's so hard for some people to understand that it's practically the same thing with this device!

In other words: Expect nothing more from the company that you buy something from...not even what's being advertised by them,
Are you serious?
The N900 cost more than most devices out there. I think it is not too much to ask for that this device at least supports what has been promised. And a lot of things are yet to be fixed, even after PR1.2.

slender 2010-06-01 07:54

Re: Where is this damn OVI update?

@Mengs
I think that in this case we have promises that are so vague that you can extrapolate anything from them to any direction you want to. Also giving onscreen gps that works but doesn´t have basically defacto (but not mentioned) route rerouting would be better example.

"It kind of can do this and this in this partical way if you hammer it a bit and lower your expectations" :D

This ovi sitsuation is so amazingly sad. Do they have any customer relations or real support people working. Better than be quiet would be to admit fck up and say that we are expecting to fix this in week. Customers are human beigns and forgive to some extent but not giving information at all is just arrogant. So weird because on the other hand they just try to make themselves socially active and open to customers but still fail on really basic things.

With this stupid answers you can excuse everything. Maybe i did research for 6 months (something that gets remarked everywhere in this forum when people are not satisfied with ther phone...) until i was sure the N900 will get a real application store and bought it yesterday.

Nokia promised that we get an ovi store update less than a week ago. That counts.
