[new developer] application ideas, suggestions and help

Hey Guys

I have some free time this summer, and the semester is just about in 2 weeks, and I'm looking to do some development on the n900.

Anything ppl are looking for or need atm, nothing too complex ;)
Cos I have to start working on my dissertation as well, ( which hopefully will be based on the n900 too if I manage to port the new version of OpenCV onto the n900, any tips there ? ).

I was thinking of a full facebook app since there aren't any at the moment.

Any ideas, suggestions ??

A fake call app, so if I'm in a boring meeting or whatever my phone can ring when I want it to. Then I can pick it up and say, "Oh, it's my wife. If it's important she'll call back," and press Reject and have it call back in about 45 seconds, then I can say, "Okay, I gotta take this."

A tetris-game with permanent scoreboard.

I'd be more than happy with the one we have now, but it doesn't store your highscores. :/

The program I want and that seems simple temporarily gets rid of all desktop bookmarks and shortcuts and widgets so you can look at your beautiful backgrounds on all the views. Then it toggles them all back.

I think this would be pretty easy, but probably instructive to do.

There already is a program to have different widgets and whatnots and then be able to change between these profiles.

Having a profile with nothing showing would solve your problem.

Sadly the name has slipped my mind but searching shouldn't be too hard.

I think Facebook-application isn't needed since we already have Facebrick. But a application to hide your desktop-widgets, shortcuts etc. (with something like a double-tap) would be pretty nice. Of course with a fuction to exclude some items (like in Fences in Windows).

Re: [new developer] application ideas, suggestions and help

We need a magic trick app.
Like for example I take a pic of a quarter against a black background and then it becomes my coin choice. I hold the phone in portrait mode with my finger on the camera button and drop a quarter behind it so it lands in the hand I'm holding the phone with but i press the camera button slightly which makes a quarter drop into the virtual 3d world inside the N900. The quarter then behaves like the ball in the bounce game and I hand it to the person saying "see if you can shake the quarter out of the phone." After they fail I take back the phone and say "see you just have to shake it real hard upside down" which then I press the camera button twice and the quarter is really in my hand and falls out on to the table. You can consult with theory11.com guys to get the proper slight of hand.

Any ideas, suggestions ??

Any work on OpenCV to make it easier to implement some human/tablet interaction tasks (gesture recognition, head tracking, eye tracking, face recognition...) would be great...

Why not a Python extension module to simplify those tasks?

Thank you,

Every single app that is made for this community would be even better if it had with it a complete un-install file (all code) leaving the OS as it was before install in case anything goes wrong.

I'll help by translating this into an application request:

There should be an application that keeps track of what files are installed when you install an application. When you uninstall the application, these files should be removed leaving as little as possible on the device from the previous install.

Solution:

There already is such an application. It's the package management system that's used with Debian package files. It already keeps track of all files that are installed (but, not every file created by the installed application, important difference here) and removes them when the application is uninstalled.

If you took the time to read the documentation for it, you'd learn a lot about how it works, its limitations and features and then you wouldn't have the need to ask for something that is already there.

One of the main benefits with such a system is that not every developer has to create her own mechanics to manage the installed files. The package system does it for her.

One of the main problems is that it's very easy to create packages that install files that slip by the package system. I offer the rootsh package as example (unless it's been fixed) where the gainroot script is created outside of the package managements control.

So, help by testing packages and reporting sloppy uninstalls as bugs so that the package can be changed to properly utilize the package system.

That's the main problem with this as what is left can cause further problems at a later stage.

Then write a proper backup app that takes a flash-able image so that it can be used as a quick back to where it was before situation.

The latter being your most important point and this is why we need a dedicated team to do this for the community and make progression as a whole a lot faster on the community and the N900.
All in all the N900 is indeed a fantastic device as a world's first and the reason i think some development flaws could be looked at from a serious point of view to cut down on the time consuming help that is called for on here and most importantly make apps safer, after all we benefit Nokia benefit.

ps very interesting points you brought up.

So, in reality, what you'd like is an easy way to create a flashable image that will restore your device to exactly the state it had when you created the image? This is something else than handling of installed files from a specific package.

Have you had a look at how the images that are delivered from Nokia are constructed? Aren't there already tools available to create such images? I haven't had any reason to search for the information but I'm sure it's not too hard to find.

And I agree on this being a useful feature if you really have to rely on your device functioning and want to have a quick and easy way to return to a known and working state. But since you already have the official images from Nokia to use (forcing you to reinstall whatever you lost that actually works) I don't think this will get lots of developers. But I might very well be wrong about that.

Porting debsigs to Maemo and getting this community to use it and take security more seriously.

Looking at the possibilities of grabbing an image at any time is rather complicated, grabbing is one thing but being able to use it directly as a restore without mounting and making a .bin is another.
Looking at Windows for instance we have the "system restore" and that is about as close an example i can bring but even the method of system restore can be bogged down by virus etc rendering it useless.
The .bin file supplied and used from Nokia is rather a complicated issue as it also has embedded encrypted drivers for the n900 so to compile that lot would be a daunting task this is why either all apps are checked for issues or a way of taking an image file to use as a restore, the latter i think would be more beneficial to end user i think, and also using your own image cuts down on download time and a lot quicker all round to get back to known working situation.
So yes further the backup already available on the n900 and make it possible to grab an entire image of the n900 usable directly as a file to flash a complete working restore with.

During a bluetooth transfer, clicking the clock (status menu area) will bring up a progress bar for the transfer.

On this Forum you see many requests for a genuin BT car kit protocol to be able to use the phonebook. Most cars like Volkwagen and Ford can't receive Vcards, so there is no work-around. See for example:
Spynexes is offline Spynexes

I would love to see a working PBAP (Phonebook Access Profile) bluetooth profile to be able to use the N900 with my car.

I guess this might be a feature that others might need too.

Thanks for the response,

lots of great ideas, I think ill do a fake call app first, shouldn't take too long and that way ill get an insight into how programming on the n900 works and it shouldn't take too long either.. A configurable widget on the desktop..

I can program in c,c++ and python, what do you guys reckon will be the most comfortable to use?.

The application manager idea sounds brilliant as well, I would think its a good idea to work on a team for that.

As for the idea regarding using the n900 with a car sounds good, but I wouldn't have any way to test that.

Anyways, will shortlist and start as soon I'm done with my exams

Thanks :)

Re: [new developer] application ideas, suggestions and help

Could someone perhaps create an app that could block calls and messages from certain numbers, so perhaps numbers could be put into categories. The call would still come through but the phone would not ring and therefore the user would not be able to pick the call up.

A few examples would be a work category, with a setting to block calls after 5pm the person who phoned would still hear a dial tone but I as the user would not know of the call, thereby not feeling guilty etc.

If I went on a stag do or something I would prefer not to be able to answer calls from my parents as another example. Does anyone think this would be a good app?
