KDE 3.5.6 Available

This version should no longer be used, newer versions are available, please PM me for links to the latest build.

244MB - 750MB+ uncompressed, + you will need room for OS. Not tested with NEW OS updated yesterday.

Install Instructions:

You will need
http://penguinbait.com/tar
http://penguinbait.com/bzip2

Must be in root.
cd /
tar jxvf /path/to/kde/file.tar.bz2

Suggested change
vi /etc/init.d/af-services

Change this line.
echo 4 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
to
echo 14 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
or
echo 24 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max

This allows you to open more sessions to the n800 either xterm or ssh. it controls how many pty's can be allocated. If you do not make this change, and you have problems with xterm not openening new terminals, or ssh not fully logging in, failing with unable to allocate pty, this is your problem. I was going to include the changed file in the OS but the new version of the OS was posted, and I was not sure if the file was the same.
This has not been tested by me in the new OS, let me know if you have it working
-----------------------

NOTE, the first time you boot it, using fresh flash, your menus icons inside Hildon will be all screwed up, rebooting will fix this, its because of an environment variable used for Menus. It may cause other problems inside hildon, it has not been extensivly tested. If you click where the menu icon is you can launch KDE without rebooting. You can not switch back to hildon from KDE, you must reboot. Have fun, if you get anything working let me know how to do it also (THIS IS AN ORDER:-) I know of no pre-req software on the N800, fresh flash is all thats needed. You should be able to go over openbox, but I have not tested, so if it screws something up, sorry?

I Suggest making KDE its own partition and playing with it. It is very useable, I never got kdepim to compile, so ther is no email application. webmail works great though.

Thanks to Nalim
http://www.kwik.cz/n800/KDE356FINAL1.tar.bz2

Thanks to YOU
Your link here :)

You can still PM me or email me contrib@penguinbait.com to get a link from me, but I am queuing 1 at a time, queue is currently empty

Note if you want to setup KDE from scratch (desktop settings), you can remove or rename /home/user/.kde This is where the panel gets the keyboard icon, you can re-add it yourself /usr/local/bin/keyboard.sh The best way to setup is to use VNC server and you can right click. The ".directory" file on the desktop, I changed a setting somewhere to show system or hidden files and now I can not figure out how to turn in off. You can delete it but it will come back on startup. anyway, let me know if you figure out how to turn it back off.

Please post screenshots (ksnapshot under graphics menu), videos, howto's, here is your opportunity to post things nobody has ever seen before. I have not even used KDE since like when 2.0 was new, but I always liked it over gnome, personally. Anyway there are tons of things you can do with all the applications in here. I am very interested in finding out what you can get working. Have fun!

I seriously look forward to the time when we allocate 2GB for our OS and we truly have a suite of application to use. I think this is a great proof of concept and I pray enough of you screem for this that maemo.org/nokia may jump on board and do some development. With the very cheap price of 8GB cards and 2 slots, 2GB for OS is very reasonable, a price I would gladly pay.

PM me if you can provide a link

You may download it and make one yourself if you like. I do not use bittorrent.

Sorry, I am relying on the community to get it out there, I already have a copy :D

You can use the above link or PM me or email me for a link.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

FYI, I have tested this on the latest OS, and it all seems good. I also loaded new OS on flash/kernel/initfs, bootmenu, and I was able to boot up my older versions of the OS with the newer versions kernel initfs, KDE also worked under this condition.

I had an issue when booting KDE the first time my n800 rebooted, not really sure what happened. It started up after that and worked fine after that?

I tried running new flash rootfs on old kernel and initfs and it does not work.

So there is no reason not to upgrade if you want to...

I tried it and everything seems to be loading until I get a crash during the KDE panel init. It gives me a desktop but no 'K' panel with desktop chooser/etc. Any ideas? I tried rebooting and so forth but no dice.

This is in NEW OS? Do you have anything installed? I only installed xterm and ssh, also python, but that was for ROX, ROX was installed also though?

You know what, try this, maybe its what fixed mine? After crash and reboot, I ssh to n800, as user "user" run stopmaemo

If you want to capture all the output in case it crashes again, run

stopmaemo >out 2> eout

When I ran it that way I am wondering if that fixed something, though I can not imagine what? Mine definetly crashed once, I want to say maybe even twice, but after I started it the third time like this it worked consistently after that, I thought it was a fluke, I guess I should do some more testing.

Let me know what happens? If all that fails you could try moving /home/user/.kde /home/user/.kde-backup

This will remove the small amount of customization I added. Most importantly the onscreen keyboard shortcut. You can create you own, by pointing to /usr/local/bin/keyboard.sh

I'm using this with the new version of the OS and I have a fair number of things installed; if you're interested I'll send you the dpkg -l output. I never had ROX installed as I reflashed for the new OS, reinstalled a few things, then copied to SD and set up bootmenu.
I found out what's causing it to fail-- the af-services script never stops and so matchbox wm is still running. Noticed when I tried dragging something the window went transparent instead of moving :-( I'll post the error log although I didn't see anything specifically wrong. Once I ran /etc/init.d/af-services stop; kwin & ; kicker & it all started up. I apologize for the obnoxiously large log although I had to truncate it before it would let me post it.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

I wonder if it is a pty problem, update you pty numbers from 4 in /etc/init.d/af-services, as I menutioned in the earlier post, see if that fixes it.

Perhaps no pty's are available, try this and let me know, if this fixes it.

Suggested change
vi /etc/init.d/af-services

Change this line.
echo 4 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
to
echo 14 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
or
echo 24 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Although I dislike KDE, and have therefore never become thoroughly familiar with it (as I'd preferred GNOME when I'd wanted and needed a full-service distro), I've gone ahead and loaded this KDE hack on my N800. I have not upgraded the operating system, and I've installed KDE on a 2gb card in the external slot. (I have OPEN-ROX on the internal slot.) I find the 2gb card is so far allowing me plenty of memory space. However, I also encountered the same crash during the KDE panel init, even upon repeated rebootings and running the stopmaemo. I had also previously modified the af-services file. Other than that, my KDE installation seems to still have some limited functionality, and I will be watching this thread closely to see what you more experienced Linux hands are able to resolve. I regret that my expertise does not go far enough for me to be able to lend a helping hand. I will wait expectantly though on the sidelines. Many thanks again for your efforts.

That was my first change and must like like ascherjim that didn't fix it. I expect there's some configuration difference although obviously it's not clear what. I'll do a little more hacking around and see what I can find out. Shouldn't be too bad since you've already created the stopmaemo script.

odd, have you tried to remove or move /home/usr/.kde ?

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Penguinbait: Per your suggestion, I moved /home/user/.kde to .kde-backup. Then when I rebooted I got the KPersonalizer screen which, after I'd entered my country and language, I was unable to proceed any further -- no button was present to click, either to enable me to go on or exit. Hence, I was locked in.

This was one of the reasons I set this up prior for you, but, its easy to get around. If you use the center key on the dpad, otherwise known as <ENTER>, you can get through the screens, and it should restart kde and boot up.

Let me know?

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

I've been messing around and I still can't get matchbox to stop unless I execute "/etc/init.d/af-services stop" as root. It's very vexing because as long as matchbox is running kwin can't start, leading to the kicker crashes. I've tried just about every combination of commands from parts of matchbox.sh to portions of /etc/osso-af-init/real-af-services that I can think of and matchbox still restarts automatically. I'll post if I figure anything out.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Penguinbait: Now when I reboot, I don't again get the KPersonalizer screen but I do still get the KDE Panel Crash Handler Screen. When I close that I get (I believe) the window manager screen from which I can get into Konqueror. (Not having previously used KDE, I'm not entirely certain what these screens are.)

penguinbait 2007-03-27 02:13

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Thats really odd guys, just now this is what I did?

I loaded brand spanking new flash 10-7
untarred KDE from root
Booted and I thought it had crash, not sure if it actually did? I used the power button and turned off the n800.
I booted back up, installed becomeroot, osso-xterm, openssh-installer
logged in via ssh
ran stopmaemo
KDE started
rebooted
started KDE from the menu and it works

and my system just crashed and burned...ok what the heck was that....it just rebooted for no reason. And it rebooted again, after KDE was started again. I am up and running now though? And I appear to be stable. Here is what I think I am experiencing. The audio in KDE is set to autodetect. After it crashed several times on me, when KDE finished comming up the last time, it had an error saying that it could not start the audio, or something. I restarted again, and started KDE again. It ran for a while and rebooted again.

I think arts is the culprit, there must be something different in the way dsp is behaving in the new OS.

These two processes seem to be respawning, which means they are crashing, I think artsd is messing with the dsp processes, causing reboot.

1698 root 1128 S /usr/sbin/dsp_dld -p --disable-restart -c /lib/dsp/ds
1768 user 5976 S /usr/local/kde/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsm

If you can bootup and get to ssh, start kde, and manually kill the arts processes.

Nokia-N800-51:~# ps -fe | grep arts
1405 user 5608 S /usr/local/kde/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -a null -s 60
1436 root 232 R grep arts
Nokia-N800-51:~# kill -9 1405

There may be more than one process, kill all the arts processes. Now inside KDE go to "Control Center" > Sound System > Hardware Tab > "select the audio device" select "No Audio Input/Output" Then hit Apply. Seems to make me stable.

_____________________________________

Can you verify if this is your problem?

What exactly happens when you start kde from the menu, does the screen turn black? does the splash screen display, does the desktop load with icons. Are you rebooting it or does it crash? How long are you waiting after you click the KDE icon?

Larry when you run stopmaemo, as user "user" are you saying after matchbox stop runs, "ps | grep matchbox" shows it running? There is a small lag between when matchbox stops and kwin starts. the splash screen is displayed before kwin starts.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

I saved off my .kde directory after making the change I suggested above. If you want you can try that.

penguinbait.com/dotkde.tar

cd to /home/user
mv .kde .kde-orig
tar xvf dotkde.tar

lemme know

Also, are you using the default theme in hildon? Can anyone verify this with a fresh flash, with nothing more than xterm/ssh/becomeroot

ascherjim 2007-03-27 04:07

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Penguinbait: I downloaded your dotkde tar and -- PERHAPS? -- installed it correctly. Now when I boot, I still get the KDE Panel Crash Handler Screen, and when I close that my desktop now shows an icon that wasn't there before, labeled ".directory" (I'm not certain about the dot). When I click on that I get a small screen named "kwrite - KDialog" that says " Will not save configuration/Configuration/file /home/user/kde/share/config/kwriterc/not writeable." When I click OK on that screen, it disappears and then lets me get into Konqueror when I click on Home.

As a further comment to your most recent postings in this thread, I have never yet had my installed KDE crash or automatically reboot on me. I also have not reflashed to the new operating system, nor at this time intend to.

I don't know if any of the above is of any use to you.

sdrman 2007-03-27 05:40

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

I have it working, but it wasn't easy. On my first try I made my partition too small. I thought 950 MB would be enough, but my "120 MB" root actually used about 220MB on my memory card. You need at least 1.1 GB. I have a 1.5 GB partition now.

After actually installing everything, I was able to load a desktop but the panel kept crashing. My windows also had hildon themed title bars. I was the menu icon here.
I think I tried "/etc/init.d/af-services stop" from xterm and the device promptly rebooted.
Then I tried it again from ssh and rebooted again. I ran "stopmaemo" as root with ssh and kde came up properly. I ran it again as user from ssh and that also worked. The menu icon works now, but I don't know what I did to fix it.

Also, I have gotten though kpersonalizer by using the d-pad. On the first couple of screens make your selection then press the center button. On the last screen, I believe this is the window decoration screen, you need to go one click to the left before pressing enter.

I normally run stopmaemo as user 'user' with no arguments. The screen goes white then black, then I see KDE starting up. In another ssh session I can see that matchbox is still running. It never quits and so once KDE starts up to the point where I get the blue desktop/icons I get the message about kicker crashing. Matchbox is still running and if I run '/etc/af-services stop' as root I can manually start kwin and kicker and things will work. Running stopmaemo via the KDE icon from the Extras menu does exactly the same thing.
I've finally come up with a sort of solution-- I added the line below to stopmaemo after the matchbox.sh stop:
sudo /etc/init.d/af-services stop

Yes, that's exactly what's happening. I can wait forever but matchbox never dies.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Penguinbait: One of your earlier suggestions was to either remove or rename (as "-backup) the /home/user/.kde directory, which I did on several occasions, with no noticeable improvement in effecting a completely successful rebooting. However, I have noticed that the .kde directory keeps returning to my /home/user directory after I've removed/renamed it. My supposition is that something in what I'm doing is recreating it. Is this effected through my mere act of rebooting, or through the stopmaemo process (which seems to download and install all sorts of files when I execute that command via ssh with my internet connection open)? I'm puzzled.

Larry

Can you tell me whats installed, is this a plain jane. I have heard of people having problems if they are running a theme. I am only using the default theme, could this be an issue with you?

stopmaemo should be run as user, the variables in the stopmaemo script are necessary to get matchbox to stop. I only ran as user, no sudo is needed.

If you look in the stopmaemo you will see the line to stop matchbox, what happens if you run that manually.

You say you "SEE" matchbox is still running? Are you talking visibly, not ps? You can not see matchbox running, you can see maemo-desktop running?

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Penguinbait: Presume you're still tweaking things, but as an update to my efforts (insignifcant as they may be), I have noted that in installing the keyboard per your instructions to run /usr/local/bin/keyboard.sh, I get the following error message:

"Sorry - server Keyboard map doesn't contain either 2 or 4 KeySyms per Keycode - unsupported!"

However, the keyboard still appears, but I seemingly must type the command everytime I'm in the terminal for it to appear.

Also, even though I still have not experienced any system crash when I boot-up KDE, I am still unable to get past the point of installing the KDE panel, i.e., I still get the KDE Panel Crash Handler Screen.

Any software you want to install needs to be recompiled for the Numpc's processor architecture. Your only options are: use the ones that have been pre-compiled or fire up the old compiler yourself.

Possible exceptions: shell scripts, maybe programs for runtime libraries like Python, something else?...

I suppose it's a possibility as I'm using the "Danjon" theme that's included in the default image. I'm not sure how that would interfere with matchbox shutting down though. I am definitely not running a plain jane fresh install; I have abiword, maemo-mapper, fbreader, fmradio-applet, and a host of other apps.

It doesn't do anything aside from the message you get that matchbox is shutting down.

I can see it by running "ps -ef | grep matchbox". At that point I see the matchbox-wm process listed as "/usr/bin/matchbox-window-manager -theme theme3 -use_t". I can also detect that fact it's running by trying to move windows (after KDE has started) which turn transparent instead of moving and exhibit the theme decorations from Hildon instead of KDE. I edited stopmaemo and commented out the "startkde" line to avoid having all those mesages scrolling past; after running the stopmaemo script several times it never stopped matchbox except in one isolated instance I can't reproduce (rebooted to test it and that was it-- never again).

I run default theme, the openbox thread recently reported similar poblems with changing the theme, to any theme. There is a MBTHEME Defined in stopmaemo script, perhaps it needs to call it by the proper theme. Try to comment out the MBTHEME, or deterMine what the value for your theme. If I get some time, I will play around. Best bet is to change to default theme and see if it works?? lemme know

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

OK, I just tested this,
I booted to hildon, changed my theme to Danjun and started KDE, worked fine.

I then rebooted.
Started hildon with Danjun theme, started KDE from menu. It booted up and crashed on the Panel.

I rebooted to hildon Danjun theme again and changed my theme to the default theme again. Started KDE, crashed again.

rebooted,
boots up to hildon with default theme, started KDE - COMES UP FINE

Switch your theme back to default "Adria" if you want to run KDE. I will see if I can determine a way to use your themes, if you figure it out please post.

I am done for tonight.

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

For what it's worth, I switched to the Adria theme -- and still got the "KDE Panel - The KDE Crash Handler." I guess it's always "come up fine" for me with this one(!) exception. That is, the system (KDE) overall has never crashed. (Am I perhaps misunderstanding what consitutes a "crash" in this context?)

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

OK, I lied.

Here is how you fix it

Just do a ps and grep for matchbox
Nokia-N800-51:~# ps -fe | grep matchbox
880 user 2864 S < /usr/bin/matchbox-window-manager -theme theme3

Change MBTHEME='default' to whatever theme you are running, in this case Danjun or theme3.

Nokia-N800-51:~# vi stopmaemo
MBTHEME='theme3'
TITLEBAR=yes
DESKTOPMODE=plain
LOWLIGHT=no
SHOWCURSOR=yes
DIALOGMODE=static
SUPERMODAL=yes

There you go Larry!!

You have to reboot after changing your theme to Adria

HEY! I rebooted and now everything looks good! The Switch to the Adria theme -- and rebooting -- must be the answer, at least for me. Many thanks Penguinbait. Now go and placate your wife! Regards, Jim

Looks exactly like what's needed. I can't believe that Nokia would be so ridiculous as to actually worry about which theme was being used.... When shutting down. Very bad design. Anyway, here's a line that can automatically adjust to whatever theme you're using; seems to work great for me. I'm really hoping it doesn't get mangled when I post it:
MBTHEME=`ps -ef | grep matc | grep theme | sed 's/\([^\/]\+\)\(\/usr\/bin\/matchbox[-a-z0-9]\+\)\( -theme \)\([^ ]\+\)\(.*\)/\4/g'`

Larry

Re: KDE 3.5.6 Available

Small change here... There are bunch of .defs files that contain nifty scripts for parsing out the current theme and so forth. Here's the modified stopmaemo script using them. Much shorter...

Larry

source /etc/osso-af-init/osso-gtk.defs
source /etc/osso-af-init/matchbox.defs
echo Theme is $MBTHEME

source /etc/osso-af-init/maemo-af-desktop.sh stop
sleep 2
source /etc/osso-af-init/matchbox.sh stop
sleep 1

export PATH="/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/samba/bin:/usr/local/samba/sbin"
export QTDIR=/usr/local/include/qt
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/qt/bin:/usr/local/kde/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/qt/lib:/usr/local/kde/lib:/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/usr/local/kde/etc/xdg/
export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/local/kde/share
export KDEDIR=/usr/local/kde

/usr/local/kde/bin/startkde &

This is a Little cleaner, but I like your other idea better anyway :D

MBTHEME=`ps -fe | grep matchbox-window-manager | grep -v grep | awk '{print $8}'`

So I am assuming your now able to run KDE
