Re: Calendar Home Widget replacement

Great work on the widget! I have a suggestion: can you make days more visually separated? The thing is, when I look at the calendar, I can't tell the difference between today's events and tomorrow's (or next week's). What I'd like is to immediately see: these two events are for today, these three for tomorrow, the rest in the further future. So I was thinking something like vertical space after "today" and "tomorrow", or maybe different colors?

How do people sync calendar events?
regards nicolai

there are a few ways
syncml using syncevolution app
activesync using builtin mail for exchange support
various google calendar hacks/apps

Just for the record, I use a variant of the "standard" Nokia method (#2), using the built-in sync feature of the N900 with a PC running Nokia PC Suite and an Outlook calendar, over Bluetooth.

In this case, when the N900 calendar is refreshed from the PC, your widget reflects the changes automatically without problems, just like the original did.

Only it's much better of course :-)

A bit off topic, but how did you get it to use bluetooth?

Hmm, I tend to forget about these things once they start working reliably... which I always regret when they stop working :-)

I believe I set this up on the PC side, in PC Suite. To configure the sync process you first need to select a phone, then a network transport. That's where you get the chance to specify BT.

Re: Calendar Home Widget replacement

Side note: no problem either updating to the latest version, showed up right away. I knew immediately, because it reverted from the "auto" size setting to the default "5", so I had to put it back in again :-)

Is it possible to make all Day Events, Today Birthdays in white color ( Font ) and all otherīs in Lightgrey or grey ?

Re: Calendar Home Widget replacement

One more feature request: can you make current-day old events to not show up?

For instances, today I had a meeting from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. It is now almost 1 pm and the event is still there (and it will remain there until midnight). I would expect that the first event in the list is the next to come and not an event that has already happened. I guess that when the event's end time has passed, the event should disappear from the list. In my example, at 10:31 am it should be removed.

Thanks.

Sorry for my English

No, I don't want to change the font color, but I try to make a
visible distinction between today and other events.

Yes, at the moment all today events are shown. It is just the
easiest way, so I don't have to care about updating the
event list. But I will change this, so the event list should be updated
as soon as the current event is over.

I'm sure the calendar applet icon is in 48x48, but either way definitely themeable

It's replacable, but NOT themeable (you cannot make the icon to change with the current desktop theme). And I think that was the thing the developer wanted to know.

It's not a good idea to overwrite any system default icons 'coz such action would be visible with or without this applet and with any theme currently selected.

My apologies, I completely misunderstood

LOL Not only that it's in 64x64 as well!

May I make an objection ?
I'm thinking of some short events (15-30 min) like if work in the field or multiple meetings is you daily business.
If you are late for some reason and the dates get delayed, there would not be a reminder of your undone work anymore.
IMO it should be an option only to hide "past" events of the day, maybe for the hole day or just if they are older than x hours ?

Apart from that - if the new (fantastic) layout-features (9 lines) of the widget are not enough, and you really need just that single line of a past event, maybe the widget is not the perfect solution  ;)

I've noticed that past events aren't removed until the nex day
If I make an event for 1:00 to 3:00 PM it stills in the widget at 4:00 PM
Default calendar removes it when its finished

hi, nicolai,

thanks for this great widget! I'm sure you're busy, but I may have found a bug. You probably know about it already, but yesterday's full-day events are still shown today under "Today", along with today's real full-day events. Or is this a feature? :)

Also, have you considered my last feature request about visually separating Today, Tomorrow, and the rest?

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

Re: Calendar Home Widget replacement

Hi,

I just updated the calendar widget in extras-devel.
New in this version (0.6):
- visual separator for today events.
- changed update policy, it now updates when current
event finished (say, endtime is today at 10:30, the
widget updates at 10:31 and this event is not shown anymore).
- widget recognize timeformat change (24/12 hr format)
- manual update (1sec long tap on the weekday name).
(for those people which have problems with syncing with
other calendars)

I don't use any sync application
and don't know how this work, but if the software changes the
calendar db directly my widget cannot recognize these changes.
Now you can manually update the widget by tapping the weekday
name (long 1 second tap).
The manual update is a bit tricky. If you tap on the widget and
the duration is to short, it opens the calendar ui. If it is to
long hildon-home enters the edit mode.

All this took some time and I hope I did not break running code.
Please test and give feedback.

regards
nicolai

If you don't have a Google account yet, sign-up for one and setup Mail for Exchange sync in N900 with Google Calendar. Setup is fairly straightforward, sync works pretty well and you'll be able to test your widget for automatically synced calendars.

Re: Calendar Home Widget replacement

Nice widget!

I may have found a bug. I used Erminig-NG to sync with my google calendar. It appears that any all-day events that I've syned appear in the widget on the previous day(e.g. an event on the 30th will show 29th in the widget). When I open up the calendar program, these events are shown on the proper day.

I just noticed that the widget does not list the present day's birthdays, don't know whether that also applies to other whole day events. Is that a bug or a design decision?

Thanks nicolai. Great work.
Just one question, is there no other way to do the manual update? I'm new to the N900 (5 days only) and still don't know the limits :)
