N900 recieves ir signals ?

Hi all,

Does N900 receive ir signals?

I have seen at one link that Infrared is provided by lirc_rx51 module .

It can be enabled via the following configuration option:

Quote:

Symbol: LIRC_RX51 [=m]
Prompt: RX51 CIR transmitter
Defined at drivers/input/lirc/Kconfig:19
Depends on: !S390 && INPUT && INPUT_LIRC && LIRC_DEV && ARCH_OMAP
Location:
-> Device Drivers
-> Input device support
-> Generic input layer (needed for keyboard, mouse, ...) (INPUT [=y])
-> Linux Infrared Remote Control IR receiver/transmitter drivers (INPUT_LIRC [=y])
-> LIRC device loadable module support (LIRC_DEV [=m])
As per the above information INPUT_LIRC should be set by 'y' for activating ir signal receiving.

How can I do this? How can I find drivers/input/lirc/Kconfig?

Please help
Thanks

AFAIK, the N900 doesnt recive ir signals. not by a software problem, but because it lacks the hardware sensor. it only has a hardware emitter.

The information about config is related to building the Linux kernel. If you've already got the module (which I think you have), you need to use modprobe or insmod to load it into the kernel and be able to use the IR device.

I recommend modprobe since this will load all other needed kernel modules as well.

The popular opinion is that the N900 doesn't have an IR receiver.

Still, it may worth a try. Nokia has lied to us about the N900 hardware before (USB host mode, overclockability, etc), so it may very well work.

If there really isn't an IR receiver in the hardware, there is nothing you can do about it from software.

(Someone suggested that the camera module should be used as receiver, but its refresh rate is nowhere near enough to process any IR signals, unfortunately.)

What about using the proximity sensor?

Is it fast enought?

The proximity sensor is used to determine the proximity of an object, not to detect IR signals.

The camera is able to receive IR signals, just start the camera and hold any kind of IR remote infront of it, Congratulations, you just created a cheap night vision :

Still the question is if we can get a FPS which is fast enough to receive all signals, it is theoretically possible.

At least I've now "re"discovered the lirc remote database and started to put the emitter to "some" use...
