Gaim 2.0!
https://garage.maemo.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=897
It is SO much more stable than 1.5... And, the options are much more in sync with the desktop version. You'll need to uninstall all of your current GAIM components before installing the new version, but all of your settings will remain in tact. Coolness! Tim |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Thanks for the heads up.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Won't install here.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
@sondjata ~ Did you uninstall ALL of your current GAIM components?
-T. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
great news, let's try
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Uninstalled everything except the gaim Data which I presumed (perhaps incorrectly) had my connection info. Should that be tossed as well?
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
It's quite impressive!!!!
Even secondary button works!!!! well done! |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
where is the .deb? All the Garage page says is
Discussion Forums: 2.0.0-0nix17-now-in-the-repository Which repository? Thanks! -F |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
OK. removed that data file and GAIM installs but now it won't launch.
Gonna get tossed real soon. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
OK where is this thing. It's not in the garage.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Could someone post a direct link to the .deb file? There's no download link at the Garage...
Regards... |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
@sondjata ~ Yes, the Data file should have been deleted as well (your settings are held elsewhere). I'd suggest deleting and installing again to se if that fixes anything.

Re: Gaim 2.0!
I hope some can help me. I accidentally clicked on debug window, and now the window floats above all other hildon windows when gaim is open. i tried uninstalling, but it survives the reinstall too. Anyone know how to get this window closed again? I can't access the gaim menu items to unclick it because this window gets in the way. it is an "always-on-top" windows which reports debugging information. If anyone out there can tell me how to close this, I will be forever grateful.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Can someone please write up some step by step instructions on downloading it i went to try to download it and it says im missing stuff so if anyone could help that would be great.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
You need to download GAIM, then the protocol you'd like to use, then other miscellaneous stuff like sounds, buddy icons, etc.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
It's at:
http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/gaim-dist/ Make sure you get the armel deb at the bottom and the protocols you want as well |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
No meanwhile (sametime) protocol... :(
oops: "unable to install gaim" :( |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Installed last night and it is indeed much better than 1.5 on Maemo. 1.5 has been quite slow on my N800 (even more so before the latest OS update) but 2.0 is more responsive in chat mode.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Yeah, I just got it too. Turns out I overlooked a file to uninstall. :o
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Installed it but can not get it to start. Any ideas?
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
This is much better than the previous veriosn :)
a few issues: 1. I can't use the Full Screen mode 2. I don't know how to configure it to open links in my browser 3. Changing a buddies alias is really difficult in the buddy list 4. I had one crash. 2 tabs open, was busy tapping in my message when I received another message. I have sounds on and it seemed to choke while trying to play the incoming sound and the 'tap' sound of the stylus keypad at the same time. 5. Arrgh - it just crashed again while keypad was open and I received a message :( other than the 2 crashes - I really like it :) |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
I'm having trouble getting it to minimise to system tray :S
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
To answer my own question about getting the debug window to stop opening when GAIM opens:
i edited /home/user/.gaim/preferences.xml (or something similar, maybe prefs.xml), and where i found debug in the file, i set the value to "0" instead of "1". That fixed this for me. Hope that will help someone else out there, if anyone winds up accidentallly pressing the debug menu item and can't get the window to stop covering up all other windows. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Tried it on my N800 now with the latest firmware and it worked great. Alot better than the old gaim 1.5 port.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Updated to the new version (2.0.0-0nix18) just now. hopefully, this one has some crashes fixed.
I need to find out how to get the browser to work though... second edit: this is the string that works for the browser :) Code:
dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=com.nokia.osso_browser /com/nokia/osso_browser com.nokia.osso_browser.load_url string:%sCode:
dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=com.nokia.osso_browser /com/nokia/osso_browser/request com.nokia.osso_browser.open_new_window string:%s |

Re: Gaim 2.0!
Newbie here. Can anybody explain how to install Gaim 2.0 on my N800? Or is it not ready for newbies yet? I know nothing of linux. I want to use it only for Yahoo.

It is quite easy to install. The instructions are spot on, just make sure you spell everything the way you see it. Also, I initially had a problem once I got things installed. It would not start, so I uninstalled everything, and reinstalled all the components again, but this time one by one. After each install, I started GAIM to see if it would run and it did. It is a very good port and works so far without any problems. I use it for Yahoo as well, and it is very handy. Good luck. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Thanks. I did look at that, but didn't quite get it. Figured it out now. Seems to work great. I would like to make it full-screen as well, but that's a minor complaint.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Is there a big advantage to using GAIM over using GTalk to get to AIM contacts? My AIM contacts work fine in the Native Google Talk chat client.
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Not sure if anyone's encountered this: my AOL account would not work at first, although MSN and irc did. I noticed the latter two had their account types greyed out, but AOL's was not. I deleted the account, reinstalled it, and it worked fine.

Re: Gaim 2.0! - Thanks for your comments!
Thanks for all you comments! Here's the (wish/bug)list I have gathered so far:
- Fullscreen windows (conversations at least. Buddy list too ?) - Working browser connection (Thanks for the dbus-send find!) I think I can implement the dbus-send stuff inside gaim and provide a new option called "OSSO Browser" - I can try to reproduce the crash caused by receiving a message while typing on the fullscreen keyboard - minimize to "system tray". I'm not sure what this means. I don't want to create a "system tray" icon, because the "system tray" (on the top right, between the window title and the minimize/close buttons) can easily become crowded. You might have noticed that you cannot quit gaim by closing the buddy list. I "stole" this idea from maemo-gaim, because I think that the panel icon can play the role of a system tray icon. - The debug window needs a close button |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
I used the nix18 version a lot today and had zero crashes. I thought you fixed something since the previous release!
I think the "system tray" comment came from one of the options in the preferences screen. If that option is not used then maybe better to remove from the preferences. Thanks for all the development of this :) |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
Oh yeah, great work nix_nix!
|
Re: Gaim 2.0!
A small issue i got: tapping a group name folds the group list, but ttapping again does not unfold. Only way i found to unfold is to use hardware key.
Big progress otherwise. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
what is the trick to get it work?
I followed install instruction from http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/ with blue and redpill mode. and tried install direct from debs, but every time same answer, "unable to install gaim" edit: I removed old 1.5 gaim and removed even /home/user/.gaim dir before trying to install new one. |
Re: Gaim 2.0!
rheve: I know. I can't figure the folding thing out. I have a few suspicions, and I will try them one-by-one, after I implement all the items on the TODO list. The hardware key is a good idea though. I was tapping-and-holding on it, and then cancelling the popup menu :)
pumo: Have you added the Maemo Hackers repository ? If so, you can install a package called "becomeroot". Follow the instructions here: http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowTo_EASILY_BecomeRoot When installing osso-xterm, however, make sure you get the Maemo Hackers version, not the actual Bora version. You can tell them apart, because the Maemo Hackers version has the letters "mh" in the version number. Then, find the terminal in "Extras", run it, and type sudo gainroot apt-get install gaim This is basically what application manager does behind the scenes. Unlike with application manager, however, you should receive a message that tells you what's actually failing. You could post that message here, or it may even be helpful enough for you to figure out how to get gaim installed. |
