Re: Gaim 2.0!

i had gaim 1.5 on before and it worked fine. i wanted to test gaim2.0. i'm going to try and reinstalling gaim2.0 with only aim protocal.

Re: Gaim 2.0!

after unistalling gaim2.0 and reinstalling it again. it worked beautifully this time. gaim2.0 is much better than gaim1.5. better menu layout and shoutcuts. the full screen is a A+, though i wish i could tap on a user and send him/her a IM msg. i dont always use the stylus or maybe tap on the user and then use the D-pad center button to send user a msg. where can we get more sound? i've downloaded the gaim-sounds but they are just not loud enough with volume pumped to the highest. great job, awesome app!!

I had just Maemo Hackers repo and the version of Gaim shown was 1.5.0-bora1 when I browsed for Installlable Applications.

but now that I entered

Catalogue name: Gaim 2.0.0 Maemo Port
Web address: http://idefix.go-nix.ca/nix/gaim-dist
Distribution: /
Components: Leave Empty

the 2.0 version shows. Thanks!

nix_nix, I have a N770, and its updated to the latest official OS2006 version. I guess Gaim 2.0.0 won't work with it unless I go to the OS2007 hacker, right?

Re: Gaim 2.0!

Hi Nix,

How does one change the Alias? I tried that in the main window for MSN protocol. But the Alias feature doesn't seem to allow me to change the names. Also, when i tried contracting a list, I had problems getting that list to expand again. It just flashes the expanded list and contracts it again.

When I wanna start a new conversation, I just tap the contact rapidly with the tip of my finger until the conversation window shows up. You, know, it's like knocking on someone's door when you're really angry, except you do it with the tip (or even the nail) of your index finger, not your knuckles ;)

Hmmm ... I dunno ... If you can find me a set of loud, short sounds, I can turn them into an alternative sound package, like, maybe "gaim-sounds-loud", or something. Let's see what kinds of sounds (if different) pidgin uses.

Yeah, I know ... doesn't work. Looks like I might have to release another version of Gaim before I switch to pidgin.

Another bug I don't quite know how to fix yet. The trick is to tap-and-hold on the group title until the menu pops up, then cancel the menu. Don't you just love my elegant workarounds ? *bow*

I installed the N770 version of Gaim on an N770 with the following specs:

OS Version: 3.2006.49-2

libice6-6.3.4-2
libsm6-6.0.4-3osso1

Hi Nix,

If the Alias cannot be edited via the software, can I manually edit a file or something? Is it stored somewhere that is editable?

When I want to install gaim 2.0.0, it requires libgcrypt11 (>=1.2.2), but I can only find 1.2.0, will somebody tell me where to get 1.2.2?

You have to add the "Maemo Hackers" repository described at http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/

Re: Gaim 2.0!

Hey, all!

I released version 2.0.0-0nix24 with the following additions:

- Made the buddy list "Alias..." context menu item work
- Added the Gaim 1.5 sounds as a new package: gaim-sounds-old

I have also updated the Web site at http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/ with some more information about repositories, and how to use the old sounds (they're not used by default). I have also decided to abandon the idea of a multi-page site. So, I merged the "tips" page with the main page.

Re: Gaim 2.0!

thanks nix_nix!

i uninstalled 2.0.0-0nix23 and installed 2.0.0-0nix24. i've also installed the gaim-sounds-old. in gaim / tools / preferences / sounds

are these the correct settings?
sound method
method: automatic

sound options
X sounds when conversation has focus
enable sounds: always
volume: loudest

sound events:
X buddy logs in
X buddy logs out
X message received
X message receive begins conversation
X message sent
X person enters chat
X person leaves chat
X you talk in chat
X other talk in chat
X someone says your screen name in chat

when i tried to test some of the events, there are no sound. are my configurations correct??

Re: Gaim 2.0!

I am also getting no sounds after upgrading to nix24. I just upgraded all pieces from nix23 and made no setting changes and did not install sounds-old.

I thought it was me as it is late and I need sleep.. http://maxthon.cafedeux.com/smilies/sleepy.gif

Re: Gaim 2.0!

Thank you, it solves the problem, how stupid am I...

But I'm wondering what's the reason, I can't see any libgcrypt11 (>1.2.2) in the list after I add Maemo Hackers, then gaim just doesn't require it...

OK - once more, with feeling :) :

I have released gaim-2.0.0-0nix25, fixing the empty gaim-sounds package.

As always, please check http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/ for new information, and more hints, tips, and whatnot.

Pidgin 2.0.0 (Was: Re: Gaim 2.0!)

Hey, all!

I am pleased to announce that I have completed the move from Gaim to Pidgin :D

The first release of Pidgin (2.0.0-1nix0) has these improvements (and hopefully no major h0rkages :)):
  • Moved to pidgin-2.0.0 (obviously)
  • Added "Really quit Pidgin ?" dialog when someone clicks the top-right [X] on the buddy list window
  • Use (nicer) Pidgin dialogs for setting aliases rather than from-scratch one
  • Added "Add" button to smiley theme prefs page, and tried out a few smiley themes from http://customize.org/
  • Added /home/user/MyDocs/* (Documents, Images, Videos, etc.) as shortcut directories to the file/folder open/save dialogs
  • Building under gregale works for both N770 and N800 - no more separate repositories

I have also updated the Web page at http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/. Please have a look. I don't know if I'll be able to rename the project and the garage site to "pidgin".

freaking awesome! :)

Re: Gaim 2.0!

I'm typing this message as I do the transition from Gaim to Pidgin on 770/OS2006. So, here we go
- Successfully uninstalled MSN protocol, smileys and Gaim itself
- Successfully added package repositories, package list refreshed OK
- Pidgin downloaded and installed OK
- Also successfully downloaded and installed: pidgin-sounds, pidgin-emotes-default, MSN and IRC protocols

As soon as I clicked the Pidgin IM icon in the Navigator, the background disappeared, but I use the Idea launcher, which sometimes causes background disappearances -- IMO, it is not Pidgin that caused this, but I can only rely on intuition and simpathy for this statement :)

- MSN working great
- IRC seems OK, but I didn't try it out much

Some comments:
+ Stability is vastly improved
+ I like the (subtle and not so subtle) UI improvements
- Can't get sounds to work
- Clicking almost any button opens up a separate window

Nice work though, and VERY much appreciated :)

PS: Google talk would be nice ;) although I don't think it's worth the hassle, seeing that there's Tapioca (if that ever gets improved...).

*edit*

Sounds work, but are almost silent! And there is a small bug with the main UI: closing a group of contacts works perfectly, but it is impossible to reopen the groups with the stylus, since they re-close immediately. Works with the button in the center of the rocker switch though.

Bug in the conversations section of the preferences: clicking the decrease font size button makes the font larger if the current font size is the default.

Re: Gaim 2.0!

OK, it seems that Pidgin includes support for a few more protocols than Gaim did, and it seems that the Jabber plugin requires a few more files to work. I'm going to re-package everything and make another release - when I find some time. Meanwhile, the Gaim repository is still there.

nix_nix 2007-05-07 22:13

Re: Gaim 2.0!

OK, here's what's changed in pidgin-2.0.0-1nix1:
  • Properly packaged protocol plugins
  • Removed reference to .la files from .install files

I have lightly tested Jabber (the plugin is now called "XMPP") with a gmail account and it signed on just fine. I have also added all the protocols I'd been missing.

Please check http://gaim.garage.maemo.org/.

fondoo 2007-05-07 22:52

Re: Gaim 2.0!

Where can i find pidgin-2.0.0-1nix??

Tabster 2007-05-07 22:53

Re: Gaim 2.0!

thanks for the quick update :)

I also tried the XMPP protocol and it worked fine with my previous Jabber settings (also a gmail account)

Note to others: remember to uninstall the pidgin-2.0.0-1nix0 Jabber protocol first if you have installed it before trying to install the new XMPP protocol.

thanks.
