Re: iPhone 4
Ok guys, i just got my hands on one, i was trying to keep an open mind and i have to say the feel of it in your hand is just a little too cheap for me. I think the 3gs is much nicer. Though it was satisfying to open it up and finger smudge it up! The OS is nice and snappy though, but not overly different to anything we have seen before....

Re: iPhone 4
I've just updated my jailbroken (3GS) OS3.1.2 to a jailbroken OS4.0...
So far no visible bugs.. all my data are carried over... Will be trying gps tracking soon (gpx) that makes use of background gps activity, will see how much power diarrhea that incurs... |

hi
how did you jailbreak it - i tried redsnow but it does not like the firmware file ? ciao |

AFAIK they both release this month Galaxy S in the UK even sooner. calling it the best screen you could get on a phone when you can't get the phone yet and there is a better screen already is rather silly. |
Re: iPhone 4
I also don't like the connectivity part. Apple keeps insisting on that huge dumb dock. Well the least they could do is make it HDMI-capable.
Best thing, IMHO, would be to replace it with a full size USB port (female). It would take the same space and the possibilities would be literally endless! -OTG -Host -And new TVs can read media directly so it would replace HDMI. All you'd need would be a female-female cable that is available at any electronics/pc/hardware store. The first company to do this will receive the BEC brilliance award :p |

Re: iPhone 4
Nah but they would make an app for that and probably an adapter with a custom chip for that app... bla bla you get the drift. I'd pay for one of those:rolleyes:
Aaanyway... guess what I've found  http://bit.ly/aiWjrU there's 3 articles that completely demolish the screen  While I don't care about the second and third the first is getting on my nerves :(((( They said it was glass and they've said scratch proof:((( WTF apple???? 's plenty of BS but now even the screen???????? |

Re: iPhone 4
I agree, a shell cracks easier than an egg. But the screen and back were supposed to be made out of glass.

Re: iPhone 4
so, on the iphone 4 are people going to be apllying screen protectors to the front AND the back?
that seems weird |

I'll have a chance to play with it tomorrow - had to give the N900 back today too since my colleague is back in the States, so I had them side by side and the display on the iPhone is a huge leap from the the 3GS and N900. It feels a ton more sturdy than I thought, not a lot of chassis flex - I cranked down on it a few times. The glass doesn't exactly feel like glass to me. It's hard as hell, but feels... dunno. Like it's polished plastic actually. I have a sapphire crystal watch and they don't feel similar in terms of hardness. The overall build is much better than I expected in terms of the stainless steel and the build. I didn't have a chance to try FaceTime - other folks in the office have yet to get theirs yet and I've yet to get my version for testing. The downparts... I don't trust the glass. Sorry, I just don't. We did pull a penny across it, and not one scratch. The front part was also pretty darn sturdy... survived a two foot drop flat down. I've seen the reports that show that if it drops on a corner, it's toast. To be honest, I believe those reports 100%. And bad part, it's not just the glass that will be replaced. It'll be the digitizer, LED, et al just for a chip or crack on your screen. That's a step back to the 1st gen in terms of bullcrap that needs to be replaced. The battery? I'll say it now. 38 hour my ***. No way. Just after using a few apps, photos, video editing, calls and browsing the web and using (what they call multi-tasking, which, isn't bad, but it's not TRUE multi-tasking) I dropped it a solid 10% from 97% to 87% in an hour or so. But I'm willing to bet that it would last a full work day. Idle, a full day plus. But 38 hours? Nope. Will not believe that at all. It's actually thinner than my 3GS. But it does lay flat whereas the 3GS does not. But that in itself is... odd. The cool part, the sides are somewhat concave so my fingers went into that groove while holding it naturally. So it's not too bad. I like the way the 3GS fits into my palm better. Oh... another part, I placed the phone into my back pocket (bad habit of mine) and it was right side up, which meant the bottom part, which is supposed to be the bluetooth/wifi antennae I think, and I got choppy reception of wifi via Pandora. BUT... I pulled it out of my pocket, no probs. My 3GS showed the same behavior, but worse. Guess my jeans have rivets that have been magnetized. Nobody else could duplicate that one. The screen though, it's the best I've seen so far. The browser still sucks. |

Re: iPhone 4
@Dave999: I've used OS4's multitasking for half-a-day on my 3GS (iPhone 4 is 30% faster than 3GS)... some notes:
- On apps that support OS4.0, it works very well. - I ran GPS logging/tracking in the background for a couple of hours. For all intent and purposes, the GPS tracking app (motion-x) looks and behaves as if it runs fully in the background and didn't skip a beat when switched in/out from. Unfortunately battery drain was still quite noticable - The UI is optimized to juggle between 4-8 apps. The task switcher shows 4 icons in a (horizontal) row at a time, and you can swipe to see the next 4 in one gesture. It works very fast if you juggle less than 8 apps. More than that, I think it takes a bit longer to hunt and peck. - Apps that don't support OS4.0 are made to act like they're compatible; they show up in the task-switcher icons listing, yet they're slower to switch in/out from because they don't take advantage of 'fast app switching' feature. This sucks. I wish they just close and not appear as 'active task'. (I heard there'll be a mod to take care of this, jailbreak needed of course). - I really like the folders management. It's very quick to create/delete/populate. |

I've heard mixed reports, ysss. I meant to link to a totally different article.
Heh... that's why we got the things in the first place. There's a build of Pwnage Tool that's been lingering around that supposedly jailbreaks the newest bootROM. But I'll double check it tomorrow. Let's see. |

That said, the user should always have the option of deciding which, and how, programs run in the background. I'd like an adaptation of the Grand Central system on MeeGo, with some options for fine-grained user control. |

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/s...axy-s-preview/ they even mention the display its almost what the whole article is about. Calling the iphone display the best display you can get on a phone yet not elaborating on the fact that they are talking about the US at this very specific time is like me saying I'm the fastest man there is and not mentioning I'm talking about those in my house at this present time. Frankly I wish they hadn't even laced the article with subjectivity touted as objectivity like they usually do with res/cap displays, but if they did, at least they could have given a shout out to super AMOLED when mentionng the "best" display. as for the antenna I can't find you a link but touching an external antenna mostly destroys it. To quote somebody else on the iphone 4 antenna "Depending on how the antenna is "loaded", the hand effect will impact the antenna "impedance" and create distortion in the radiating pattern. Furthermore, it seems that RX diversity is not supported, which is a key feature next generation smartphones shall have. Also, I wonder about polarization performance and its impact in mobile positioning for high speed packet data....we shall wait and see real life results... " "anytime you change the way the signal propagates such as having a free and open air space around the antenna vs holding it with your hands changes the way the signal radiates from the antenna thus completely hosing tx and rx characteristics. Its going to been even worse than before." so if they are indeed the antenna expect it to be even worse than the 3GS and the ipad which is known for poor wifi signal strength. I'm hoping it's not and jobs doesn't know anything about his product. Plastic is mostly transparent to that frequency anyway so no it does not improve the signal if it's outside. Perhaps our own maemo community RF expert can chime in here, I'm a theoretical physicists, but this isn't my field (pun not intended) and I'll be very interested in any more info. |

Let say about this, 6x9 is what a 5MP capable of producing good print, but can you enlarge it to 3x larger without seeing the pixelation? In this case, 12MP is great for video recording (1080p) capable and better wider capture area. Pixels per square is a lot more but I know that it is not all about the Pixel per square that is count. It does count to ward the quality as well. Let take a look at 1.3Mp, 2Mp, 3.5MP, 5Mp and 12Mp pictures from all Nokia phones. YOu'll see much improvement in clarity over the Megapixel, now compare 1.3MP to 12MP picture!! Do you see the difference? Can you spot the quality? After all even it is not DSLR it has to be atleast far more better than the old 5MP camera Unit that Nokia keep on reuse ever since the N95 released. Atleast I can take higher resolution pictures with 12MP and shrink it down to 5Mp and looks superb :) better than the 5MP |

Re: iPhone 4
Cue. I'm in the US. I can't walk into any store - they closed the NY Nokia store - and just purchase an N900 even if I wanted to and have it in my hands that very same day.
Different markets, different folks. I'll choose the path where I'm just stating what I can verify, and remain as egocentric in regards to what is "preview", "review" and actual. I can get an iPhone 4 today. Walked into the local Best Buy and they had a few left. I can't do the same in the T-Mobile stores for the N900. It's all relative to what each of our experiences are... and in this case, it's markedly different. Now... with that said, I'm still under the impression that an antenna, made of metal with a larger surface area than an embedded one, that's smaller is optimal. Samsung Galaxy S isn't out globally. If so, please tell me where it's been released. Also, please show me where a true comparison, ppi has been made. If it's out, that should have happened already. If it hasn't, I'm willing to locate one if I can source it, do the comparison myself. Saying it's the best one out isn't hyperbole, this time. I can compare it to phones - and please notice a pattern here - that I can get my hands on right now, at this very moment. Announcements of forthcoming phones is honestly a waste of my time at this very moment, but I will revisit it when I can make that comparison faithfully with my hands on it. I'm not much for previews. The hype around the iPhone, or any gadget, would have been misleading in so many different ways. From the fake as hell "better than retina can discern" display - sorry, that's marketing BS from Apple, retinas can go above 440+ppi or so, matters on the distance, scientist and opinion, and the iPhone 4 display isn't there yet - and Samsung has somehow not reported their ppi yet... which is odd. It'll all boil down to which you like, dislike, believe, and get your hands on. I'm aiming for getting my hands on it. Not a preview. Not even a review. I do a better job of convincing myself than marketing BS. Nokia included. I can't (and won't) defend Engadget's take on the iPhone 4; even if they paid me. It's just all relative to what they were comparing, and in my case, I'd rather be practical. Can I touch it, can I see it, can I use it right now? Then I'll compare it. It's in preview, there are no specific numbers, it might or might not come out soon... I truly won't care about it until it comes true. Thanks for the information on the antennas though. I can honestly say that I just learned from you. Thank you. |
Re: iPhone 4
Of course there is a noticable difference between a 1.3MP picture and a 12MP picture. The problem is that if the sensor capturing these images are the same size, then there is more noise introduced. That's why the high end digital cameras have larger CCD's to go along with the high pixel counts.

Re: iPhone 4
@maxximuscool: you win, i've made a bad decision.
edit: hint: the "DSLR" part is important. spoiler: what sondjata said. note: "megapixel is king" = bad logic. there's more to a photograph's image definition than the number of pixels. |
Re: iPhone 4
Guys, I have a theory I'd like someone with an updated 3GS or 4 to test.
So, Steve said that if you need a task manager, they blew it. Obviously then, the system is meant to work without any user intervention. But seeing that every app shoves itself into the memory, without so much as indicating it to the user, I figure there must be some limit to how many apps "stay open" (well, paused in Fast Switching mode or something). In theory, eventually things should start closing on you. So suppose I open Skype and expect it to remain connected and accepting calls. Then I open a bunch of other stuff. Will there come a time when Skype closes to free up memory? Will the user get any indication of this, or will he continue to think he's connected? The current system gives no indication whether an app is actually doing something or just listed there in the (not) task manager. Could someone please test this somehow? Even if this isn't practically limiting (meaning that the limit for apps is very very large), I still find the system horribly lacking in feedback and control. Thanks. |
Re: iPhone 4

But at least 8 or so of them are multi-task friendly: Evernote, Twitter, Bing, Mail, Safari, Phone, Pandora, Messages, Clock, Calendar, Maps, Photos, Settings... and I'm not noticing any slow down, nor anything being removed. I'll see how many more I can shove in there, but I fear that since most are not iOS 4 optimized, I might be wasting our time until I get more apps that are optimized to hold a state. Those that are not, they will not fast switch, they basically restart (lord, I like but absolutely dislike this so-called multi-tasking model, it soooo sucks) and I'm not sure if it's impacting memory or not. To me, and I'm being wholly unscientific here, just seems to follow the more serial-tasking part of the OS. I'll update in a bit. |
Re: iPhone 4
I've also read that iOS4 enables the swapdisk/file that was never on before this. So, that might raise the roof a little bit (256MB RAM + ?? swap).
|
Re: iPhone 4
iPhone 4 has 512mb of RAM. iPhone 3GS, 256mb.

Re: iPhone 4

DSLR is imporatant, bigger CCD is better at capturing lights which create better picture but in this case all Digital Cameras now a day don't use DSLR anymore. Because it's heavy and chucky, this is where the sensor come into place. Lower mega pixel counts does have a disadvantage in quality wise. But 12Mpx sensor will still produce the same amount of noise as 5Mp. The catch is it is wider and can be compress down to 5Mpx resolution with less noise which meant better printing image. Also algorithm is different as well in converting light to image on the sensor. I've compared the 12Mp Satio with my N900 5Mp and I got to say N900 lost hands down with the same picture print on the same size. Plus when you zoom, N900 pictures wasn't good but 12Mpx Satio still looks alright. |
