There is a clear similarity in style/design of the phones n97 and n900. As clear as night and day.

there will be various N8's and N9's under new naming system just think of old system like n80 = N8-00 and N81 = N8-01, N8 and N9 is a class of devices and not actually a single device.

i don't understand, I thought the N920 would be official succesor to the N900, and the N9 just succesing the N8...makes logical sense to me :S lol. (Whatever happened to the N920? No more rumours? :P )

N920 is too long for today's kids. They need a simple short name.

Honestly, the MeeGo devices strike me as being more of a "chimney" on the "house" (see first link) than part of the same "roof" as the N8...

But there's a problem with my feeling that MeeGo devices will be "S" devices....

Why would MeeGo devices get the "S" designation, when Nokia has an OS, "Symbian" that starts with "S"?

But weird naming schemes have never bothered Nokia before. And with MeeGo, Nokia has taken weird naming schemes to a whole new level. Why stop now?

The N9 will have MeeGo as the OS, now it's just SYMBIAN, BECAUSE meego is not finished yet ;)

I don't understand why people are confused about all this... what we see is the N8-01 and not the N9... It runs symbian, it's specs are very similar to N8, looks like the N8... etc...

the internal specs are totally different.
the N9 ever had and will have meego.
the symbian device we're seeing is the N8-01

s-series are luxury feature phones like the Nokia 8800 Arte.

N97 and N900 same style? They don't even have the same core... (ARM11?!), leads to think they have nothing in common but the (N9) beginning of it's names!

Seriously, all those pictures look just like the N8 but with hardware keyboard. The C5-01 stuff you were talking about, what does a different frontcover do to hardware?

And there is really no point in porting a full blown Symbian to a device which will never have it run anyways?! As I said have an educated guess!

the C5-0X thing is much different to just a front cover one is a 600MHz ARM11 device the other is ARM9 264MHz device made specific for China Network Bands.
check out X5-01 and X5-00 too they are miles different from each other in design.
the device is rather a N8-01 or E7 it will be released with symbian^3

Never look on comparing sites you don't know doing a good job...
But still same design and the worn look for N8-xx makes me lough that anyone suggests something else than "it is the N8 with keyboard design test"

I notice that the grammar is incorrect, to use the plural of "device" when referring to the N8, N8 needs to be pluralised as well. And checking the link to see the quote in context, I see that it now reads "device" not "devices". You were reading too much into what was a typo.
