Problems in Nokia N900

Hi guys ! Just want to share my views/problems with Nokia N900.

No doubt it is a very good phone but there are following problems which I think should be rectified.

1) Battery lasts very less I would say with normal usage it lasts only for 10 hours maximum. Before the day ends, battery is flat or at the verge of getting flat (depends upon usage).

2) There is no widget to show unread SMS's or to notify that you have unread messages pending.

3) There should be an option to be in classic mode instead of just conversations.

4) There should be search option available to search in messages (although widget is available for that).

5) There is no option to delete all sent messages (conversations). Suppose messages are being forwarded to groups then it will keep a copy of same in the persons (since it is conversation , technically) But doing it often would make it slow at later stage...i.e. its like a copy of message at so many places.

6) It only clears recent calls (which includes all missed/rcvd/dialled). If i want to clear just missed calls or dialled calls then I don't think it is possible.

7) When data is transferred from one nokia to another nokia phone, order of fields change. i.e. suppose there are three mobile numbers sent in one name. all under the field Mobile...then it is not necessary that in nokia n900 all will be transferred in same order (though all three contacts will come) but the order changes. It is a big problem I have 2000 contacts which many numbers stored in one name. Now I don't know which one is the last used which this problem is not there in symbian.

8) There can be an option for missed call/sms notifier by sound, which is missing.

PS: This is just my observation, in case there is a solution for any of the above, please guide me. Thanks in advance.

9) I forgot, autolock device period can be a minimum of 5 minutes, it should be availble from 1 minute onwards, or should be custmoisable.

10) I have noticed, after making/rcvng a call, when I want to hang up then there is no display (unless I slide the keyboard so that backlight is on and then I disconnect the phone)

1) Battery lasts in excess of 24 hours for me,

2) There is - search harder.

3) IIRC there's an app for that.

5) Threaded will look weird without all sent messages in place.

7) I don't get what you mean, sorry.

8) IIRC there's an app for that.

10) I don't have that issue.

Go to:
Settings > Display
Set 'Backlight timeout' to desired length. I use 1 minute.
Check 'Lock screen automatically'.
Device will lock when the screen goes out.

This is the only thing that really bugs me when using it as a phone. I've gotten used to it, but it's kinda annoying. Otherwise, no real complaints.

There is the Conversations widget, and maenotify?

There are more, but I've these 2 on device itself.

download the 3g/2g switch app. switch to 2g when you are not surfing. you will be amazed how much more battery you will have left.

2) There is no widget to show unread SMS's or to notify that you have unread messages pending.

8) There can be an option for missed call/sms notifier by sound, which is missing.

the blinking light goes off. you can change colours and the blinking pattern by downloading the led pattern app. if you want to know how many unread sms or missed calls you have download the call notify app, it also makes a sound.

3) There should be an option to be in classic mode instead of just conversations.

dont understand what u mean

Classic means SMS by SMS, and not threaded.

I've never had a battery drain problem during idling. I have 3G always on. I don't use the 2G/3G switcher app or anything else in particular to save power, just common sense in setup. The phone well easily sit idling in standby for a couple of days. Or if it just sits for a few hours after charging I can plug it back in and it will still say "Fully charged". To me, battery usage is very satisfactory, about as good or better as any comparable unit I've used.

Check for a few things...
1. Leaving 2G or 3G enabled should make little difference, with some exceptions. But leave wifi and bluetooth off when not in use.
2. If your phone is still running PR1.1 upgrade to PR 1.2. Do the update OTA from the App Manager if possible.
3. Disable or uninstall any widgets you can do without. Check the setup of those you can't. They sometimes do frequent polls that drain the battery.
4. Make sure email, SMS, etc. is not doing frequent automatic checks.
5. If you still have a drain during idle time open the terminal app and type 'top' and hit enter. Check for running processes eating CPU cycles. The phone should fluctuate between a total of about 1.5 - 4% of CPU at idle.
6. To fully condition the battery, let the it drain until the low battery alarm sounds then recharge for 5-6 hours. Do this 2-3 times in a row.

All else fails, post back here with your findings.

Thanks Crashdamage

1.I have tried switching between 2g/3g as well as leaving it default (dual)...no change...maybe because my provider will provide 3G services from August here. My bluetooth and wifi are used as and when required, other wise they are off by default.
2. Phone is on PR 1.2 and was updated already the way you have suggested.
3. I am only using any extra widgets.
4. SMS is automatic i.e.recieving... and I dont think it can be scheduled. However, e-mail I am manually checking twice a day to conserve battery.
5. when idle top is within the range you have suggested, I dont know how to take screenshot, else I would have posted it so that you can see if any extra process is running.
6. Conditioning of battery is yet to be done, I will post feedback after its done.

PS: Only conditioning of battery is left, rest of the points were already incorporated and still battery is not lasting much. ( i have even dimmed display light to minium and off after 30 secs).

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly. It's not an app.

He's saying he believe there's an app available for that, you'll have to search for it as he doesn't know the name off the top of his head (or didn't feel like adding it).

Are we all referring to the Conversations Inbox widget, perhaps?

Re: Problems in Nokia N900

Yes shiny...thanks everyone i installed it..

However unable to install call notify (it gives python 2.5.xml missing error). I install maenotify but nothing happens after installation is finished...i.e. cant see any icons or find where it is installed or how to make it work as it didnt give any error while installation..

same happens with glogarchive program (program for searching) program installs fine but when i run it...it runs for few seconds then autoexits without letting able to use it..

i would appreciate if anyone can tell me name of widget for classic sms mode.

And how to delete all sent messages at once (in conversation)

Is there a widget to connect nokia n900 to pc and type/send sms's through PC

Re: Problems in Nokia N900

Hmm...

Never thought of the 'old' (un-threaded) way of sms's. Think you have a valid point there, Vicky2005 - there are some distinct advantages now I come to think of it.

I have just discovered that 'Ctrl+A' will select all messages for deletion and that, as you point out, sms's can be deleted by conversation only as opposed to by 'sent' folder - so thanks for making me think about that.

Good luck with your Battery issue - I get about 8 hours before I look for a charger or swap batteries (always carry a fully-charged spare) My use typically includes two hours of browsing, about 5 short phone calls (all less than 5 mins) and about 10 photos (I work in the building industry) and about 40mins of music via the FM tx.

This appears to be better than friends' iphones or comparable Android devices. If I use the 'phone in GSM-only standby (i.e. no wifi and desist from playing with the lovely, shiny slidey screen I'll get at least two days before the battery dies.

I recently went back to an old 6210 navigator that was always good for a couple of days at least between charges and used it in the same way as my N900 - the battery only lasted 12 hours... That battery is still in good condition, but my perception was coloured by my changed use patterns; I use my N900 instead of my laptop, my torch, even my CD player, so I guess 8 hours is a fair trade off for the extra functionality.

If you do find the 'philosipher's stone' for battery management be sure to let me know!

Re: Problems in Nokia N900

don't forget you can always turn your display back on using the slider on the right side, or the button on the top, in addition to sliding the phone open.
