Well, it seems that the latest Nook tablet has been locked down. Not a good sign.

Maybe we should change the banner on the home page as Cordia is now based on Mer?

Estel 2011-12-26 05:52

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

To be honest, banner looks like advertising project that is already in - at least - beta stage, which is quite confusing for most people AFAIK. Also, it quite a dissonance with Cordia developer politic of not getting widespread interest on project (yet) amongst non-coder userbase.

IMO, Nemo should get there instead, but AFAIK any person with good "reputation" can get banner for her/his project, so, apparently, Nemo devs were not interested (which is kinda ironical, as Nemo is now much more usable for end uses - majority of people reading banner - than CordiaHD).

Also, again AFAIK, updating banner in case of changes is up to project maintainer(s).

/Estel

It goes beyond merely blocking sideloading.

I had one reserved (but put down no money) and ignored the calls to come in and pick it up once the investigations at xda-devs showed that the unit was using the HS model of the OMAP4 with everything signed.

Whole thing is secure. Signed bootloader, checksummed kernel. Totally not worth the time of anyone interested in this sort of stuff. On the other hand, I've had a decent amount of success working with Stskeeps on the Nook Color. Maybe something will (finally!) come of it in the next few weeks. Maybe.

After following up a link from MWKN today regarding full fremantle stack for Mer http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.h...rdia.devel/290, I made a quick enquiry to see that that would mean for us:

[14:03] <muks> it's stock hildon (with compile and various other issues fixed) running on top of fedora 16
[14:04] <muks> my goal is to get these into general purpose distros like debian, fedora, etc. so users can develop apps using their desktops (without the use of sdks)
[14:05] <muks> and also be able to install debian with the relevant packages on a hand-held and get the maemo desktop, apps on it, just like the N900 phone
[14:05] <muks> cordia is a project to get maemo running using the mer stack
[14:06] <muks> because both of us need to share work in porting gtk+, hildon, etc. to the latest versions _and_ further develop the maemo stack, we are working together:

This sounds like great news. We can set up and maintain a repo if you want.

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

Thanks. This is one of the key points I was looking into recently. There are packages for Hildon and co in Debian but, when last checked, they were really outdated. I'm all for seeing an updated Maemo stack running on a Debian 6+ base.

When you say porting gtk+ etc. to latest versions, do you mean like porting hildon to use GTK+ 3? This could bring some interesting changes given Gnomes current tablet like interface, maybe better support for rotation for example.

IIRC - at the very least: window-layer-thing display code will need to be patched, and sapwood must be replaced with some other engine such as Murrine GTK3.

BTW, GTK+ 3's only important big change is theming. Most other stuff should retheme just as well on GTK3 with minimal patches.

And I almost forgot - I was doing an open replacement for the Fremantle alpha theme, icons and all. I'll go see if I can dig it up and finish it.

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

On a theming note, I like whatever theme that is in the screenshots.

Depending on performance of devices, we may have to have something like a modified sapwood to cache cairo surfaces.

FWIW, here's a video from last week:
https://malgudi.org/~muks/tmp/hildon-desktop3.ogg

I'm on vacation and will return on Wednesday. I'll make a post then about status, and ask for input on some matters like whether we should have forks of gtk+, etc. to exist along-side distro gtk+, or have a different distro with patched gtk+ and use a chroot sdk to build stuff. Having a forked gtk+ means maintaining forks of libraries that link to it too.

I tried install cordia ui on nemo but I have a problem with Cordia repository: http://repo.pub.meego.com/home:/smok...ku:cordia.repo - they do not exist. Is there any way to install it yet?

Sorry for my bad English

Oh the thought of debian + hildon does make me feel giddy for cordia again :)

Now if only it could run on that new Motorola N950 phone, then I would be very happy.

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

There is a new Alpha release of Cordia HD available.
See: http://cordiahd.org/#news

It is based on GLib 2.32.0, GTK+ 2.24.10 (with ported Fremantle MAEMO_CHANGES), bleeding edge libhildondesktop 2.1.44 and CSSU version of Hildon-Desktop 2.2.142-19.

Smoku, do you plan to support also AMD processors?
I have tablet Acer IconiaTab W500 with C-50 processor and it would be great if I could run Cordia HD beside W7.

Sure. There is already i486 build available: http://repo.pub.meego.com/Project:/C...Mer_Core_i486/
It should run on W500.

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm not enough familiar with linux to create my own testing image. I tried the one on Cordia site (i586.20120424), but booting stuck with message that it's for Intel processor. I thought if we could expect from you also image for AMDs once in near future?

At this moment I have dual boot with W7 & Android-x86 4.0 RC1. Android is installed on SD card and works quite decent and very responsive, but it's not completed, what is expected for RC1. W7 is good when the tablet is used as netbook with docking keyboard, but it's not finger friendly. So, as N900 user, I think that Cordia HD would be great 2nd OS instead of Android, even if everything won't work (e.g., BT, sound, screen rotation etc.). What matters are just wifi, touchscreen and backlight.

Here http://cordiahd.org/download/HD/N900/ is an experimental UNTESTED image built for N900.

Please let me know whether it works etc.

If you want to build/fix the image yourself, the ks files are on github: https://github.com/Cordia/images

There are no apps nor widgets nor plugins ported yet, so there are none included in the image. I'm working on getting osso-xterm running.

But it boots and starts the working desktop I hope?

I didn't.
It's a barely modified source of CSSU release, so it's probably their mod. :)

I've seen a launchpad repository for oneiric. Is hildon usable on ubuntu?
I only have precise now, is there a build for that?

And finally one last question, what exactly is qildon? Qt port of hildon or just a way to run qt widgets on hildon?

This is Thomas-Karl Pietrowski <thopiekar@googlemail.com> work.
You need to contact him directly with these questions.

The second thing. Launcher app allowing running plasmoids as Hildon-Desktop widgets.

There are instructions on running Mer image on Joggler: http://www.jogglerwiki.com/wiki/Mer_Linux

You may try using these to modify Cordia HD i586 image, as it is basically the same as pure Mer, with just Cordia HD stuff added on top.

I apologize for not keeping up with this thread, is the long term plan for Cordia to have it run on the N9? Also, is there a place to make donations to help with development?
