We need to replace:

- Media Player (DeaDBeeF maybe?)

I'm sure I missed some...

I seem to recall MohammedAG is working on a Qt clone of the N900 stock media player... would that be a possbility, to keep things familiar?

If we would go for the N900 Media Player I would rather want to see something that actually works like Media Player (with whole MAFW behind), not something that just looks like one. (I didn't investigate whether Mohammad's player uses MAFW, though ;) )

Same goes for the browser. I have nothing against users installing standalone browser, but I would like to stick to EAL based solution in the default system.

P.S. One of my motivators for going on with this project is that I want these clever Maemo solutions not to be forgotten.

MohammadAG's media player, just like the stock one, uses MAFW which is AFAIK not part of the MeeGo middlerare. Correct me if I'm wrong.

In the same vein, perhaps work could be undertaken to make Modest use something that is not Tinymail. UI-wise, Modest is sound; it was "the" app for GTK+ developers to look at to see how a program should be Hildonized. However, you only need to read the many stories 'round here to see where it fails (slowness, etc.).

MohammadAG's Qt Media Player does support MAFW, nicolai added support for it. However, when using my N900 with the default media player, I'd notice slowdowns with huge playlists etc. Not to mention Grillo seems to replace it outside of Maemo (though, admittedly, I don't know how stable Grillo is)

As we can see MeeGo provides only low-level APIs.

btw, what other media players for N900 there is, which use DSP-accelerated decodecs for video? Just thinking, maybe some of them should be ported first than for example monolithic mplayer. I guess VLC nor Kmplayer doesn't use gstreamer either though. Gstreamer would have dsp-acceleration.

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

I'm pretty sure kmplayer is a front-end for both GStreamer and MPlayer.

Hi thanks again smoku. I am not trying to hijack this thread but was hoping u could convince the team behind the community ssu to join your cause. Trying to fix a dean os isnt worth it, where as creating a new and better one is like your idea.

MAG wanted to see the push feedback, so as I was already making a screencast, I may as well show the current state of Cordia's HD.

Smoku....its amazing stuff. Since your saying the drivers for the N900 can be redistrubuted, and Cordia is linux kernel based like maemo, would this be possible on an android phone....speculative of course. Id love to pick up my next phone based on hardware and use this incredible os on it. Maybe one on those dual core phones perhaps :)Even if not, it is pretty incredible what u achieved in such little time. u guys are accomplishing what nokia could not.

Also are u considering mouse support for the x86 version for non touch input computers? It would make a nice lite os for netbooks.

This looks great! I'm not sure I like the effect where the whole display seems to push into the screen (i.e. get a little smaller) when the user presses a button or drags - is that intentional?

Yes. The idea is to automagically show mouse cursor when you move the mouse/touchpad and hide when you use the touchpad.

I tend to agree.
I have a mixed feelings. While this is a nice feedback for touch, it gets a bit too much after a while...

Thanks for the hint. :)

I followed the installation steps (Used last MeeGo image from 2011-02-22 instead of the trunk link in your wiki) and it seems to work. Hildon desktop is started after a reboot and I'm able to run applications.

But I also have some problems:
1. Every application I started looks very ugly. See this Screenshot:
http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_TR...Screenshot.png It seems to be a kind of resolution problem?

2. How to change the background picture (In your youtube video there is an desktop image)?

Thank you very much!

Either set your screen to 16bpp, or upgrade to at least hildon-desktop-2.2.141c-9.1

Same as on Maemo.
Code:

> ls ~/.backgrounds/
background-1.png  background-6.png  thumbnail-2.png
background-2.png  background-7.png  thumbnail-3.png
background-3.png  background-8.png  thumbnail-4.png
background-4.png  cache.info
background-5.png  thumbnail-1.png

Thank you but I can't imagine what "16bpp" means. 16 bit per pixel? If so, where I can change this value?

In case of hildon-desktop I also does not know where to get bu I assume it will be available in your OBS repo sooner or later?

Please let me know if I can help in a not too technical way. Maybe I can upgrade your wiki with information given here?

"zypper update"? :>

The package was available in OBS in the moment I answered. (How would I know the exact version number? ;) )

Re: Cordia : Maemo5 UI on top MeeGo Core

Guys, I'm bipolar about libhildonfm.
Do we want to keep it, or do we want to get back to standard GTK+ file selector dialogs?

Both have upsides and downsides.
GTK+ file selector is not that touch friendly. And using it would require "dehildonizing" this part of Maemo apps.
But keeping libhildonfm would mean that Maemo apps would use a different file selector than the rest of the system.

Maybe we could make standard GTK+ file selector more touch friendly?

Consider what's the solution between KDE and Gnome.

At least in my KDE box, GTK applications use KDE file picker. For some time it was messed up in Firefox, but that was because the application was not a real GTK one.

Isn't there any Freedesktop standard regarding file picker?

From what I understand of it, I would prefer to keep lihildonfm, making this as easy as possible to use preexisting maemo apps.

great work btw

Let's use the one from Qt or MeeGo Touch.
For better integration with Hildon apps we could reimplement libhildonfm as a wrapper library for the related MeeGo APIs.
