A co-worker of mine believes the N900 was a skunk-works project by the Internet Tablet group, i.e. the higher ups in Nokia did not see the device coming (which paints the group in a bit dimmer light with respect to being open source.)

So they went with the core focus of the tablet (computing, wireless data) and tossed in the phone-like features just to make the point "we can be awesome and assume your functions."

This also leads me to believe that they knew maintaining their own Linux distribution was a dead-end deal (since it's a ton of non-core effort and expense,) thus the merger with Moblin.

If this is true, this is absolutely a horrible way to do business and it just capitalizes on this community for lining their pockets with zero regard to the Maemo fan and developer.

It explains a bit - like who's here, who isn't - but a bigger part of me doesn't want to believe that fully. Or else... they've just lost a lot of folks trust.

An interesting question would be as to whether its release was a good thing or a bad thing.

I would say it was good despite everything, in terms of its direction and what it tried to offer and that we are sort of lucky to have it (having also followed the n900 when it was a hypothetical device on these forums).

Yeah. Will be interesting to see how this evolves.

n900 was def a good thing. it saved my transitio of n97->android.
and i really dont want an android for all it can do.

my tiny complaint -and this was not mentioned in any review i read- the inability to use the camera function whilst on a call. i can look past most things (hell i dont even miss google maps anymore) but im an avid photographer (although amateur) so the lovely carl zeiss lens gets left lonely because i refuse to hang up on someone just to take one photograph.

I'd say it's bad. Milk the community, give nothing back, then demand the same price of admission for the next iteration of an OS that you've helped to make better but are somewhat shut out of that community because your voice isn't as loud as their partner Intel?

Like I said, if that's 100% true, **** Nokia. There, I said it. That's some "milk your fans for more" type of move if I've ever seen one.

Lots of the things missed are due to time constraints - I am thinking may software features, however there are lots of physical (industrial design ) mistakes that have not been made ( or have been resolved ) on earlier Nokia phones and should never have been made with the n900.

You can look at it like that, or as a small division equally frustrated trying to shake things up. And lawyers/marketing teams persisting in stupid games.

It gets a bit harder for the legal eagles and marketers to keep bits closed if you've negotiated agreements to go open with everything, especially if it results in redevelopment. If anything, (this being the case) it's a not quite optimal move to work around the lawyers, etc. as much as they can to be where they want with respect to the community, instead of being an internal curiosity at Nokia.

Of course this is pure speculation, far worse than anything related to PR1.2 or whatnot.

well im surprised with all of the above shared thoughts yet there is no mention of a Nokia conspiracy against its n900 owners. well here's a little secret that ill share for you to chew on.

i currently do own these mobiles
htc desire, google nexus one, htc's hd2, nokia e90, nokia n97, iphone 4(pre. ord.) and nokia n900. there is a noticeable common factor on all these phones, not one of these phones are even near perfection, not a single one. simple as that and to prove it i have been visiting the all of the above community forums
and read over and over again of owners griping on about the product that they had bought.

to make matters worse some owners did and still do kid themselves into thinking that their product satisfaction will arrive in the next update or even worse still that the next product release will be the holy grail.

this self inflicting anticipative behavior is actually worse than smoking 60 a day and can very well lead to expansion of the heart, blocked arteries, chronic nervous deposition and/or repetitive negative thought expression towards mobile manufactures. no matter which way you deal the cards its you who are been hurt by your very own actions.

how many times can these threads go on for?
there is only so much flogging that a dying donkey can take or is it? ............ for how long shall we keep flogging dead topics like this?

by the way is this a mobile manufacture conspiracy?

what i dont get why you say the costumers are uniformed maybe this is true for ppl wich bought the N900 after the PR. 1.2 but before December 2009 for Example when there was the hype i did Talked in the IRC Meamo Channel, did read the Forum up and down there was no Word that the N900 wont get this or that Feature , or that is Step x from y and that it isnt planned to release a Maemo6 for it. Of course some ppl did know about that but nobody told it to us at this time. Thats why early buyers like me feel cheated. Becous if anybody would have told me this Facts i never would spend 600€ for this Experiment.

I will take all back if anybody could show me a before December 2009 Thread where this Facts are inside.
