Re: Want to Give Up N900

nokia knows one thing and it's how to leave their clients behind after just a year of releasing N900 (by the way i was waiting for N900 and bought it when they released it) any way they now want to abandon it like that. they told us they will make the device more efficient and they will update its operating system and they will make it better i waited 4 to 5 months to see this happen, then they told us there will be a whole new operating system and i am still waiting and i know they won't release it for N900 (no one knows why?) any way i am tired of nokia and i won't wait for any thing from nokia. my message for nokia is NO MORE LIES IF YOU CAN'T DO SOMETHING GOOD DON'T DO ANYTHING.

Well said and it surprises me how some people here don't see how nokia is giving us the middle finger. Meego or what ever they decide to call it once it comes out better be more than IOS4 and Android or they (Nokia) is dead. Maybe then the die hard fans will rise up :)

What are you expecting from MeeGo that Maemo doesn't provide? I bought the N900 for what it could do at the time when I bought it, not for what might happen in the future. Maemo already does more than Android and iOS. If you can't see it then you must to be drinking a lot of marketing Coolaid from Google and Apple.

Future apps and games will be written in Qt so they would work on MeeGo, Maemo and Symbian devices like the N8. I don't see anyone dropping support for the N900 very soon.

What do you want from us now. Begone already.

Tbh you appear like a suicidal person, standing on the top of a building, yelling all the "unfortunate aspects" which led you to this decision, waiting for someone to hold you back. Which is bad luck in my case: I always yell them to stfu and jump.

"What are you expecting from MeeGo that Maemo doesn't provide?" well let's see first of all a good media player my media player sucks from the last time i updated my n900. then there is no good games for nokia i have installed a lot of games and they where all boring, mooooooooooooore programs there is tons of programs for android for free, you know i like maemo i really do but the problem is nokia company they want to benefit in every single way.

1)I'm sure 80% of the subscribers here know how to get a better video and music player from the repositories
2) I'm sure you haven't tried DosBox, where you could play better games then any mobile phone could provide at raw speed (ok, compare to the PC during DOS era. XD). If you still have problem, gets a PSP
3) Last time I check, `apt-cache search \ | grep -v ^lib | wc -l` gives 4060 packages, they're all free, not shareware crippleware light version something. Exactly how many of them have you tried?

You're just complaining they don't give you things by default, then yes, N900 is not for you. In fact, no smartphone is designing for people like you.

Drop it off.

That's the most annoying part about TMO. Our beloved foul language which often hits the bull's eye is about to cause infraction points, but foul threads like this one are fully legitimate, instead facing instant lockdown.

One major advantage of apps on the n900 - no annoying advertising.

Re: Want to Give Up N900

thanks actually no smart phones aren't for me that's why i changed my old device, there is a lot of programs i know but they are not different from each other or if they do they have no or low quality when i bought N900 (i love N900 and it is my favorite device) i was sure that there will be more programs and more games for it (by the way there is not much difference in programs compared to symbian) but now i am not sure any more and i hate that feeling. currently there are more than 30 application installed on my N900 they are not different as compared to my previous phone.

Thanks mate. I like this song.....

I decide to keep my N900 for 5 more months and let see what will happen.

If not much improvement provided after 5 months... then I will make another post to talk about it and give up my N900, and I will not buy any Nokia phone after N900, 5800, N95, N80, 9300, 7710, 8210

Official support that lasts longer than a year? I hate to be a snarky bastard; but Maemo offers a lot of freedom true enough, but twice in a row, Maemo has been basically dumped before all bugfixes were in place.

Re: Want to Give Up N900

@cmsjkung

- No Flash Player 10.1 Support.

there are devices that supports 10.1 before the n900 (i think)

- Video Players (Default, SIB and KMPlayer) not as good as I expected, as it can play many different format of video files but lack of subtitle and audio selection supports.

hmmm....i have not encountered a non-playing video file in kmPlayer unless there is something wrong on the way i convert or download or transfer the video.

- For game, most game emulators are running slow, dos box also has the same problem.

normal to see, its not a game device

- Camera quality is not good as too much noise for night shot.

i agree, so that is why i have a separate camera

- No Meego OS support from Nokia.

we cannot get anything

- Phone function is not good to use.

phone function? like what? i have small hands, that is my problem in phone functionality of the n900.

Well, you have to admit that hearing the same message trumpeted so often by so many people, over and over again gets a little grating on the nerves.

Whoa there.. I almost started sounding like one of them legendary Nokia apologists! OK, I'll come back by adding: It probably means Nokia needs to read Maemo's forums. I know! CRAZY TALK.

Ah, now I understand.
So, you dismiss the people who don't share your opinions as "fanboys".

If this is the case, it seems that it is impossible to have a civilised discussion with you, so I'll just move on.

I dunno.. but I gave my sister my old N800 before I'd bought another one to replace it. (It was just missing the damaged kickstand and I really wanted it to be a whole perfect N800.)

Seems to me these things are quickly becoming hand-me-downs, eh?

Lack of subtitles? Subtitles Support is out almost from official phone release!

Also there is Extra Decoders Support which contains additional audio and video decoders.

If you are to lazy to use search tool or ask people for info and help, just sell your N900 to someone who will know how to use this pocket netbook.

It all depends what you were expecting of the software. Personally I would like a few more games but its far more important that it has full SSH, browsing and other Linux goodies, as those are what its intended for. For games, I will buy a Nintendo 3DS as NO smartphone/tablet plays games that well due to the lack of a good D-Pad and sufficient buttons.

We still do not know for certain the N900 is not going to get it, only that Android got it first. If you are going to jump ship every time something new comes to a handset you do not currently own, you will be swapping handsets every month.

What makes you think Android will be any better? The speed is 99% down to the speed of the handset and all high-end handsets are between 600-1000Mhz Cortex A8, which of course the N900 can be over-clocked to 1Ghz easily and has a superior GPU to most handsets running at 1Ghz native (they use the extra CPU power to offset a poorer GPU).

Can't argue there, but again is there an Android handset that is any better? (I am genuinely asking)

Your point being? How exactly does that make the N900 any less usable now, today?

Also Meego is not being supported by Nokia only so far as iif you call their customer support they wont help you if you are using it, as the N900 was designed for Maemo. It doesn't really mean a whole lot in the great scheme of things, doesn't make it any less usable when its all done and released. My Windows laptop is not supported with Ubuntu installed on it, but it doesn't make it suddenly useless.

Thank you for your advice.... you are a nice guy unlike some people do not like to hear negative opinions in this site (they need to grow up and don't live only in their dream)....

Flash Player
When you see the flash player demo video on N900, you may think it should be the first device to get it but not finally.

For Subtitle Support
Subtitle support application does not work for MOV file as you can not select different subtitle and audio files...

Camera
I can find may mobile phone got better picture quality than N900. Don't want to say the mobile phone names....

Phone Function
You will find lack of search/short cut alias function in contact, even the first release Meego got search/short cut alias function in contact.

Yes, we are all pissed off about not having Flash 10.1, but who can tell that we will not get it eventually?! Nokia didn't make any official statement about getting or not getting it. Even if Nokia will not provide it, I have big faith in this community. If Motorola Droid (same CPU and GPU) is going to get Android Froyo, I believe that some people from here will know how to bring Flash 10.1 to N900.

Big majority of the people all over the globe are watching AVI (divx/xvid) videos on their PCs and TVs (divx/DVD players), and also this is possible on N900. So, majority N900 users are satisfied that can use torrent client on N900 to download AVI videos, then to find proper subtitles and play videos on N900 in the same way they are doing that on their PCs.
Also we can download AVI videos to PC with N900 as remote control (VNC viewer) and after video is downloaded to the PC, we can stream it or transfer it to N900 over home wi-fi (over the air) if we have enabled media sharing on our PCs. My iPhone friends are so jealous about that. ;)

Also N900 is going to get VLC Player.

To search contacts you just need to be on phone's desktop (don't need to open phonebook) and start typing on hardware keyboard the first letters of your friend's name and you will find him/her. This is solution for landscape mode. For portrait mode (closed keyboard slide) you can open icon "Phone" where is a list of recent call. Than choose "Select contact" and you will get on the right side of contact list a letter groups "0-9", "ABC", "DEF" etc. So, let say, if you press on "ABC" once, you will get contacts that start on letter A, if you press second time on "ABC" you will get contacts that start on letter B etc.
Other solutions are to install MyContacts or/and Horizontal-Call.

Thank you very much.... your advice is very useful.....

That is an irrelevant excuse to the point I'd made. The vitriol was unnecessary.

i got my iphone4 3 weeks back haven't touched my n900 since than and only use it for mp3 music in toilet. The number of apps on iphone is amazing, the navigation, os, everything is so smooth and silky. Plan on trading n900 out even though i have nitrdroid installed on it and o/cd it to 1Ghz.

I think you should trade in your N900 mate.

My Girlfriend has an iPhone4 and thinks its absolutely awesome. She couldn't care less what is "under the hood", she just wants something that is easy to use and nice to look at. And i know countless others who are just the same.

Now admittedly i have only had my N900 for 2 months. It doesn't have the huge commercial app store, and/or support from nokia. But i have totally and utterly fallen in love with it.

I have been struggling to explain exactly why i do, but i do. I know system specs are thrown back and forth between phone lovers debating which is better. But i feel the real deciding factor is who you are. And it fits who i am.
If you are the kind of person who wants to know how and why something works. You're an N900'er
If you get as much satisfaction from finally figuring out a rogue line of code that has been crashing your app, as you do from actually using that app once complete. You're an N900'er.
If even though you hate the fact that official Nokia support is limited, it makes you feel like your device is viewed (despite its specs) as a sort of underdog, and you wanna make it kick *** just because it can. You're an N900'er.

If you don't get these sort of feelings from the N900 then the sooner you get rid of it, the sooner it can be reurbished and bought by someone who IS going to fall in love with it.

Best Regards

Stefan

Re: Want to Give Up N900

@stefan,

It's not that I haven't given it a chance. Bought it back in Jan 2010. Loved it till sept when I bought iP4. I even made my boss buy an N900 back in April. But lets be honest the only thing keeping n900 alive has been teh community. I used to frequent this site to get any kind of info about new apps / games etc. Ovi store was a joke and dont ask about the MAPS. Pathetic atempt by nokia to test their loyal fans with an experimental phone. On the other hand, i'm overwhelmed with what's available for idevices. I managed to JB it after upgrading to 4.1. Everything is smooth from recording HD videos to using maps.

I will never buy a nokia phone, (had bought N96, N80, N70, 33xx and few more dont remember) again. My GF was interestd in Android after seeing nitrdroid on my N900 but after iP4, she wants that and she will get it later this year.

For the time being i'm using the 900 as an mp3 player and will wait if meego will be ported for it. If i find it useful i will keep it otherwise trade it with another iP4.

Re: Want to Give Up N900

Why bother telling us all of this, no one cares, it's your device - sell it if you like. If you want to share an experience, that's okay, but know that lots of people here thinks the other way, it's maemo.org after all. So don't get insulted if someone is arrogant, posts like yours are common in past few months, lots of you complaining guys really have no idea why did you bought n900 at the first place. So if you still have doubts, sell it until you can regain even 50% of money invested in it, and go for something else...

Hi Sak

This is precisely the point i was trying to make. The N900 is not for you.
From your reply i can see your main needs/wants are Apps, Games, Store, Maps etc.. And for that even the most diehard N900 fanboy would tell you IPhone and Android win. I was trying to help speed up the process so that someone who is gonna love having it can get a hold of it.

Have you seen the episode of friends where Phoebe gets told about the Xmas tree's wish (or goal or something)? She objects to trees being cut down i.e "killed" for xmas and gets told its their one wish in life to be a xmas tree.
Thats kind of how i see the N900. A little computer with real power, whose wish is to be used, tinkered with, hacked, modded and pushed to the extreme. With you it will never happen and i feel sad for the little guy.

The one thing i will say that strikes me as a little ironic with your posts.
Iphone = Ipod that makes calls.
Ipod = fancy Mp3 player (with added bells and whistles)
N900 = Linux Computer with phone bits added
Linux Computer = More computery type wizardry than you can shake a stick at.
Yet you use your Iphone as primary device and the N900 as an Mp3 player.

Anyway good luck with whatevver you do mate.

Stefan
