If you are away from your phone and come back and look at messages there is no evidence of a message. The idea of having to click on every message you sent at such a point to determine if there is a reply is time-wasting and silly and presumes knowledge of the N900 which isn't apparent when you buy the product. Messages shouldn't be hidden from the home page. It is a "mortal sin" to make incoming messages require selective clicking to find them.

Hmmm.. apparently you didn't read this. In addition to those other 3, the task switcher icon in the upper left corner also glows when there is a notification.

My N900 has more issues than yours if that is any consolation. which is why I am hoping HTC release a meego phone.

I've had similar problems with "missed call messages". One might be listening to netcasts. Message arrives in one's short absence (or a call attempt). Nothing visible. Go to bead. X out the netcast and other windows and a "missed call yellow screen" appears next day. The notification is far too late to be useful. It should be on the top of the screen. Immediately.

conversation with new messages are displayed with a different colour and moved on the top of the list...
If you not noticed this try to change theme or reflash your device

Last but not least, buying an N900 and don't install any app is like having a ferrari without whell

EDIT: i want quote mikeallen, don't know why it quotes cfh11

My consolations. Never thought I would get so screwed up and messed up by a company like Nokia. One suspects that your sentiments are not a million km away.

Errr... it is for me. This sounds like an issue with your service provider, not the n900.

I don't observe a change of colour - but that is an aside. The key issue to me is that there is no top of page notification. I am not cooling for colour changes or any fancy stuff. Just basic notification working, out of the box.

I'd might be happier to buy fancy wheels for the "ferrari" if the steering wheel didn't keep falling off. When the steering wheel keeps falling off I loose confidence in the car and the company.

It doesn't appear to me to be anything to do with the service provider - the date and time of the SMS (alert message) is spot on. The problem is that the N900 is not presenting the message in a timely and "emphasis of matter critical" mode.

I don't encounter these problems with PR1.2. You probably just have a bad phone. Get it replaced.

BTW, the official N900 website is quite clear about how the conversations work (http://maemo.nokia.com/features/conversations/) - it shouldn't be a surprise that messages are "hidden" in a conversation.
