Applications in Maemo Extras or Ovi have a very little chance of messing up your device; it's only -testing and -devel that you need to worry about.

Just approach ideas with an open mind.

(After all, these days, "apps" are what set smartphones away from feature phones/dumbphones.)

I suspect people are as you say in the back of my mind, and I am not wasting my time and everybody else's to express the problems I am having. My time is valuable, as is many peoples'. If I was stupid enough to use "Facebook" I would have no problem using apps. I don't see why I should have to use apps to get functionality that was available for decades on Nokia and other phones.

Bottom line:

1) If you believe the software is defective, flash your phone. If you believe you hardware is defective, contact Nokia.

2) Take some of the suggestions here and get some apps/tweak your device a bit. You'll be glad you did ;)

3) If you don't want to put any effort into or just don't like the phone/software sell it and get something else.

Sorry, we're not that stupid to believe you that your phone failed on its own without idiot intervention.

Phew, I say it. I feel good.

You put yourself to shame with your childish pro-nokia fanboyism.

If you are not willing to listen to our suggestions, then I beg to differ

If you are not receiving the missed call/message/email notifications that you say should be there (they should, and are on everyone elses n900) please try re-flashing your device with the pr1.2 firmware, also re-flash the emmc. Make sure you do a backup and transfer it to your pc first as flashing the emms will delete everything in the phones memory that is visable to you through file manager.

The reason I say to do this, (you are entitled to ask why, how else do we learn?) is because your phone appears to have several major bugs that are not due to bad firmware, it is due to a bad install. The nokia ota update is a joke, imagine doing an upgrade on a pc compared to doing a fresh install.

Re-flahing will take you half an hour, I had never touched a linux os before I got the n900 and I've had no problem with anything, this community is brilliant and a testement to oss, I think that you should be a little more receptive to ideas, as after all, we're only trying to help you and receive nothing but your thanks for doing so. we are not paid to answer support threads, we do this for fun, or something like that anyway.

Please re-flash and then come back here and tell us your not happy with your phone. It will no doubt fix the majority of your problems.

If there are things that you would like in addition to the standard features of the n900 then come back here and seek advice as to which app would suit your needs, no doubt you will be given a kind reception and pointed in the right direction, and the beauty of oss is that all bar 10 or so apps are completely free.

I hope this helps

I realized I'm wrong in judging others by his attitude. Thanks for your reminder.

Btw, though I don't think I'm that pro-nokia, but you guys seems to take 'nokia fanboy' as an insult to others here. I wondered, is 'pro-nokia' that bad in your eyes? ^^

Right, and you are doing it in the User Community. Not to Nokia. Its exactly like joining a Toyota Prius Fan forum, and then demanding that Toyota fix your sudden acceleration problem there.

I'm sorry for you, but other then telling you how to use the device you bought I can't fix your issues.

Re: The N900 I am using (10.2010.19-1) has some incredible defects

I tried re-flashing the phone again, assuming the possibility of corruption in the original download. I downloaded new update software, and when I ran it, it said I had the latest version installed - (which I knew). It gave me the "option" to re-install - but the "re-install button" provided was greyed out. So I couldn't flash it.

Has anyone in Nokia tested the flashing software in the misleadingly named "Nokia Software Updater" (ie should be "Nokia flash updater" or similar - because the software is other stuff - eg the PC suite). v 2.5.2 en. I have hardware version RX-51.

While I was able to perform an internal backup of my calendar etc using the icon provided on the phone menu system, I can't do it with Nokia PC suite (7.1.51.0) It says 12819.4 MB of free disk space is required to backup this tiny device! It refused to go beyond that point. The backup made internally was about 2 MB.

I also can't send a text message using PC suite using this phone. The "messages" option is greyed out. Contacts and calendar works OK.

I have never had a problem like this with my previous Nokia phones.
