How can I change my default font in N900 ? I would like to do little experiments with other fonts.

so I downloaded the font in the post you linked, renamed the four ttf files to *.ttf.old and moved the new ttf files into /usr/share/fonts/nokia/

then rebooted. nothing changed at first glance, except that my bookmarks displays small squares instead of letters as the header.

why would that be?

I would not recommend anyone to replace the standard fonts Instead install your fonts to /usr/share/fonts and thereafter mod your gtkrc file /opt/usr/share/themes/YOURTHEME/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
Replacing standard system fonts might mess up your system quite badly...

what exactly do I change in the gtkrc file in order to change font to the ones downloaded in the earlier link?

theres no mention of .ttf at all in there.

edit: put the ttf files in /usr/share/fonts/ and rebooted, now theyre working. i assume its cause theyre named the same as the default nokia ones in /usr/share/fonts/nokia/ ?

You will find references to "Nokia Sans" in several places, change these to the name of your installed fonts, it could be "Droid Sans" or "Myfont" or something else. If you do not know the name of your font open settings in the notes application and check the name there. If you have installed the fonts correctly they will be in the font-list.

i want the font that i have at the yellownote app.
but i understand to change the font you must have 4 different files of the font.
i download this font called concielian from http://www.1001freefonts.com/ but it has only one file. Can someone explain to me how to get this font on my nokia.
my english is not very good if someone can explain in dutch would be perfect.

copy it 3 times
rename the 4 fonts
use the guide at the beginning of this thread to find the names

to create the hidden .fonts folder use Winscp or xterm with mkdir .fonts when in /home/user/ directory.

If anyone is interested... I added some lines to the script and I'm currently using the black plastic theme with the black color scheme, so my script now looks like this.

much text, I know but simply copy & paste it into terminal and hit Enter...

Thanks for the tip , but it doesn't work even if you rename it and copy it three times and also use the guide in the beginning :(

I have downloaded some fonts and used your tip but still no luck ,

Hello.
Could you please tell me what I did wrong.
I copied your font in the /home/user/.fonts
Then I executed your script(previously changed black to blue variation) under root
But I get this message:
/bin/sh: perl:not found

EDITED: nevermind...figured out script should have been executed after cd /home/user/.fonts

Now I wonder how to change font in menu=)

EDITED2: Ok I think I need help with chcnging to another font.
Should I delete previous font from /home/user/.fonts folder? Is there any special command I need to disable script or something? How to go back to default one?

Didn't found the menu font either... But to get back just switch the font names in the first line, so
"perl -pi -e "s/Nokia Sans/HandelGotD/g" /opt/usr/share/themes..." becomes
"perl -pi -e "s/HandelGotD/Nokia Sans/g" /opt/usr/share/themes..."
;-)

Could you please make clear,should I delete previous font file and leave the one I want to use in the .fonts folder?

Also I would like to know whether I can use any fonts or not. Because I've tryed segoe font(taken from w7 default font folder) and it doesn't work. Do I need to change fonts at first somehow?

guys

is it possible to take every ttf file (windows and online site`s ) as a fonts for the N900 or are the fonts little bit modified for use on the Maemo Device ?! ;)

That might slow down the N900(especially applications that use a font selector) and also /opt/ is not very big IIRC. You could of course symlink the fonts into the directory if you wish...

I wanna ask if "one of the ttf files" which can be found online will be work on the N900 - I don`t put all of the fonts on my N900.
I saw yesterday a nice font online and download it. Then I take a look inside (you know in windows you can take the view in a ttf file ;) )
But when I take a look of the size of the files

There is the issue that the font, which I download, is 50 % smaller then the one in the N900. Can be that a problem ?

Example : Nokia Sans is something like 120 kb and the "new" font is 55 kb ! I know its just "kb" but its stupid ...

Well..I don't see any "user" folder in my device...and I set my PC...to "show all hidden folder"...can anyone help please...:confused:

Hello!

I was playing with Black Plastic theme as it allow to change fonts quite easy -- I can confirm that you are not limited to *.ttf files only, you can use OpenType (*.otf) fonts without conversion. As for font size -- if font contains more glyphs it's size will increase, ie. Segoe (included in win 7) has some variants more than 600k!

Tested few unhinted OTF fonts and must say, I am impressed with on-screen rendered quality!

Thank you, most of what looks borrowed is from humanity, one needs to have it installed for the icons, I would say that the rest is my own work, these are prototype screenshots and as placeholders I have elements from many themes (among these black plastic). When it gets released I am aiming at using my own art though. Sadly it might take some time, since I'm travelling at the moment and will have much work when I return home...
