Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

It's definitely faster than 1.0, but still nowhere near microb.

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

Mozilla improved zooming a lot. Now it's a please when you double click on a web site and that portion becomes instantly well visible. And hardware keys to zoom in/out also work much better!

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

There is no way this is faster than the built-in browser. It is better than it used to be, a definite improvement, but nowhere near the goodness of the microB browser.

Good Work Mozilla.

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

Thanks for this, guys at Mozilla. I think it is incredible and while not as fast as Microb, on my 900MHz N900 it's fast enough. I am very close to making this my main browser on the N900... I'll have to test it out a bit more.

The history feature alone is such a joke in Microb, that I'd be happy to switch if the speed is up to scratch...

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

What is wrong with you guys?

This version is out for a while. Unfortunately this is v1.1 RC1 (beta).

Check http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/mobile/maemo/

This link for the latest version: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/ download the version 1.0.1.

You can check in your /home/opt/var/lib/apt/lists opening the moff.mozilla.com_latest_maemo_multi_dists_chinook_ release_binary-armel_Packages file:

Package: fennec
Priority: extra
Section: user/network
Installed-Size: 6312
Maintainer: Mobile Feedback <mobile-feedback@mozilla.com>
Architecture: armel
Version: 1.0.1
...

The final 1.1 is not final!

Yes it is. Setup a 'Mozilla Catalog' in the app manager as follows and you'll get Firefox 1.1 final (works in the US anyway):

Catalog name: Mozilla Catalog
Web address: http://moff.mozilla.com/maemo/multi
Distribution: chinook
Components: release

1. Type 'about:config' in the address bar.
2. Type 'plugin' In the search bar on top.
3. You should see some options popup.
4. Need to change these 2 (scroll down a bit):
plugin.default_plugin_disabled
and
plugin.disable
5. Tap on each one (or use the arrow keys) and hit enter. This will change the value from true to false.
6. Close Firefox and restart.

The only application enabled when I install this catalogue was:

Mozilla Runtime 1.9.2.1 + rc2 ... 28,6MB...

Where is Firefox 1.1...?

That does not enable flash for all sites. You must enable flash manually. I just posted how.

I think it installs the Runime with it - been so long since I originally install FF I can't remember now...

Very likely if you want FF 1.1 final you must completely uninstall any beta or RC versions. Or maybe that catalog setup doesn't work in Romania...?

All I can say for sure is I upgraded from FF 1.0 to FF 1.1 this morning with those settings and it definitely is a final 1.1 release.

But it's worth it to post the same thing in 8 different threads? You should take your own advice.

Okay so let me clarify for the confused minds (including mine)

http://www.firefox.com/m/beta -> will install the beta and this is what I thought was the new update as reported by whoever started this thread.

Only later I discovered:

http://www.firefox.com/m -> will install the 1.1 final and is definetly an improvement from the beta.

You can actually verify the version by going to the About page.

so there you go!

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

To be honest this browser is a little slower than microB but the UI enhancements and the ability to weave sync make it a very good second browser. I'm happy that its going to be the default on Meego. It's finally usable as an every day browser (I've been waiting since N810 days). btw my N900 is oc'ed to 850.

You need to update the plugin extention in the settings part, then reboot the phone vids run smoother for me now on this one, they look abit clearer for some reason too.

I started this thread. I wrote that Firefox 1.1 was out. I explained how I installed it originally and how I updated to the 1.1 version. I also wrote my repository settings. Anyway if I confused you I am really sorry.

My opinion is that FF is really a great software. N900 is also an internet tablet, so browser is an important part. I think that now we can use FF as our primary browser and with Sync we have huge advantages.

Anyway I agree that sometimes it is still slow and MicroB behaves better

Its just that microb feels so light when using it, that must sound weird, but it just feels light and fast, im going to try FF though for abit see if i can get used to it

I've been running the nightly builds of fennec as my main browser for quite some time, then just a few moments ago App Manager told me Firefox 1.1 is available for update! I did the update, rebooted and all is well. Bring on Firefox 2.0!

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

With the stock kernel it was too slow so overclocked to 900 MHz and it works better, but FF keep crashing. I think there's a problem with audio and flash and maybe a few other things flash related. Oh well, back to the stock browser.

when i was watching a youtube video of don rickles on the johhny carson show i was hitting the volume button on n900 and it wasnt working looks like it wanted zoom anyone know why?

Also in the app manager where yo can uninstall apps on the n900 theres a app called mozilla runtime, is this used by microb or just firefox and can i uninstall it since I already unistalled firefox?

jaysire 2010-07-02 06:24

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

I'm going to give it a little more time, but right now I am a little concerned. My battery went from full to empty during the night and all I had open were two Firefox tabs. Battery also went dry during some light evening surfing yesterday, so this is twice Firefox has emptied my battery even though it came out just half a day ago!

I love the interface though, but people calling it slower than Microb are right. It's sluggish as hell when you're loading a page.

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

One more thing I noticed... if this is supposed to be using the same rendering engine as the desktop Firefox or even Microb, I call BS. Facebook is a good example. The bar at the bottom with your chats is hovering annoyingly in the middle of the page, which indicates sub par html/javascript/css interpretation (or coding on Facebook's part). Still it's not working the same way as in other browsers. Wonder why?

exactly, same here. Plus someone already pointed out earlier, Microb just seems to render everything a touch quicker and smoother so it can't be the same rendering engine.

I am using both Firefox and MicroB, microb being my favorite. but firefox is well worth a try and flash works great too.

To speed up firefox it is better to disable flash (as is by default). It seems that I enabled it in a previous version (with about:config, plugins) and this setting was not resetted by all the updates which followed. Now I have disabled flash again, and firefox is much faster now.

jukey 2010-07-02 07:22

Re: Firefox 1.1 is out

IMHO rendering is not the problem of Firefox. The problem is that it interacts with the OS very slow.

One example: Try to listen to music via bluetooth stereo headset, reading mails and jump often back to Firefox... it freezes very often and the whole system becomes unusable.

I do like the Firefox UI concept and also the plugins but at the moment I can't use this browser as default one. It's getting better from version to version but is far away from it's goal to be a real alternative browser.

Typically mobile browsers don't support fixed elements for performance reasons. You can see exactly the same behavior in iPhone's Mobile Safari.

In any case, the updated Firefox seems a big improvement performance-wise. I just configured my browser switchboard to make Firefox the default browser. We'll see how that works. Maybe Firefox Sync is worth a big lower browsing performance

Or you could enable flash and install Adblock Plus, that way only "useful" flash files will load.

You probably all know this already, but you can click with your mouse anywhere in a text in firefox and then start highlighting stuff with shift-arrow right or shift-arrow left. Copy as you normally do with ctrl-c and paste with ctrl-v.

Tested it yesterday and works for me.

You can install the clipboard plugin, it allows you to long-press on a text element to copy to clipboard. Not as versatile as a proper mouse mode but usable.

Really? I am using the "Finnish" keyboard and it's working great... I would think they are the same! We even have the letter "å".

Do you have white arrows left and right or do you have to press the "blue button" to get them? One caveat is that you can't see that you've selected the beginning of a line. Just press the first letter (or immediately left of it) that you want to select - then you just start pressing shift-arrow-right to copy characters.

Jag är dessutom svenskspråkig själv...
