Another thing is....this is a TOUCH SCREEN phone, hardly anyone now a day use buttons to navigate through things. I DO NOT feel like i am missing it and don't feel it is useful. Don't get me wrong, i am all for it if you can leave the camkeyd press alone.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess this is where a pref might come in handy. Gesture support while the screen is unlocked is great and buttons have no use while the screen is unlocked, but if you're out taking a walk and the phone's in your pocket and you want to skip a track feeling for a button in your pocket is a lot better than taking the phone out, unlocking it, hitting the right on screen UI element, locking it and then putting it back in your pocket. Having the physical buttons be useful should be pref enabled.

that's what i said! default media player has working volume control while screen is locked, why not instinctiv, but play/pause and previous/next song functions as well? i'm tired of unlock my phone only for tap next song etc, i think this is a very good idea. and is no conflict with camkeyd or whatever if is used while the screen is locked (as long as you don't use the power button ;) )

dont know if its possible, but perhaps you could implement these controls that will only work if the screen is locked, and revert to volume/camkeyd controls when unlocked? keeps everyone happy! (i'm already happy but thats probably the medication.) :D

I agree. Physical controls make a lot less sense when the screen is unlocked.

Wouldn't the headphones button make more sense, assuming one uses a four contact jack?

Oh, and, the camera button also needs to be handled differently when the camera slider is out. IIRC, even if the camera app is offline, camera button calls camera app, instead of exposee.

the headphones that came with the phone (mine at least) have a button, although its never actually done anything! not sure if this is hardware or software issue though.

i actually use the headphone daemon that, along with the headphones that
can with the n900 is used to pause/play a song played with the embedded media player. i think use the volume rockers for next/prev is fantastic and even would liek it more then vol up/down, since i usually set a volume and thats it. btw those earphones are really good in noise canceling so in order to hear someone talking to you and not to yell and them, i have to take them off :)

Totally agree with this, it would probably be better to enable hardware keys only when screen is locked.

Edit: I don't have any head phones with hardware buttons, -_-
