maemo-hackers osso-xterm : dramatic improvement

Just a heads-up for regular xterm users who didn't see the post on the maemo.org Planet : today maemo-hackers released a new version of osso-xterm that frees us, at long last, from a very irritating shortcoming it's had since day 1 : it now spawns login shells and reads $HOME/.profile, like any god-fearing xterm should do !

Thanks to 'inz' and Marius Gedminas for this fix...

Also, for those who don't always pay attention (like me :-), I discovered only today while reading inz's blog, that ever since version 0.13.mh18 (jan. 24th) those Control-something shortcuts on the right toolbar have been user-configurable through the "edit" menu. Another minor blessing to be grateful for :-)

Thanks for the post--I wouldn't have know about these useful tips otherwise. :)

It would be really nice to have osso-xterm take parameters, so that one could create icons to launch command line only apps directly.

About tip: Instead of entering 'exit' to get back to user from root you can enter ctrl d instead. Slightly quicker. (And ctrl d in the outer shell (the user account shell) will terminate the whole xterm.)

Could you please give a hint how to create such icons?

Anyone know where I can get this app? If I use Application Manager it says it's installable, but then says Package not found.

Thanks,

Bill

Yup, that's why I was so glad to find out that the shortcuts are editable, 'cause I wanted a "ctrl-D" and now I got it :-)

You could always click 'ctrl' and then 'd' on the keyboard.. it's quick, although the keyboard isn't up all the time though.
Then there's the rest:

ctrl w - delete previous word (I use this a lot)
ctrl d (while not at empty prompt) - delete letter under cursor
ctrl a - move to start of line
ctrl e - move to end of line
ctrl f - move one letter forward
and so on.. also known as the 'emacs' commands.

That is what I did till now, but why tap twice at opposite ends of the screen when you can do it in one ?
The only other shortcup I added is "Ctrl-A,D" (to detach from a Screen session). That was *three* taps :-)
