Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Great post - obviously took some effort and is appreciated. Certainly makes a good blog post or wiki page. I'd be interested to see the same thing posted on Andriod and iPhone forums and see the results.
What would have been great as well is a shot with a point and shoot and then a bridge or dslr to see how the scene should look. |

* compression and its effects * color correction and effects * detail saving * sharpening * optics * software decisions. Yes the exposure could be altered but really, if a camera consistently needs manual adjustment, is it not inferior to a camera that does not? Also, if a camera has poor optics and bad compression, color hue and whatever, does it matter how exposure did? F was the best in both light and dark. No contest. I expected N900 to beat iPhone. I really did. Stupid software. |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Too bad you couldn't let people rank the pictures....F definitely looks the best. A and B are quite close, though I do prefer B. I just like the colour balance better on B. The rest all are pans. Google bleeds colour. The less I say of D and E, the better. Quite disappointed with E really. SE have a history of producing some very nice camera phones, so extra negative marks to SE for not living up to it.

Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Now that you revealed which is which, can you post the full exif data for each of them?
Its seems like each camera used different settings for the same picture, and sometimes even a small change in the position of the camera can make a big difference. For example, it seems like in the flowers shot, the N900 camera focused on the closer trees and therefore the trees at the front pretty detailed but the distant trees came out a little blurry. The iPhone's picture focuses on further away objects, and so the trees at the top right are clears, while the closer trees look a bit blurry. Another effect is that the proportion of the sky in the picture (slightly different in each camera) can affect the exposure and white balance settings. Anyway, I kind of expected B to be N900: good color reproduction, good detail, reasonable dynamic range - though not the leader of the pack, and noisy at low light conditions (I guess its because it doesn't use aggressive noise reduction, and a bit too eager to switch to ISO400). |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
These rwo pictures are quite difficult to compare. The best and the worst can be different in these two pictures. I would say that flowers and colours are best in B and the evenig picture is absolutely best with F.
