Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
F looks like it has much better dynamic range than any of the others, managing to capture detail in the shadows of the first pic without even of hint of blowing out the sky. But even it has, in my opinion, pretty awful quality overall. All are ruined by horrendous amounts of noise reduction followed by sharpening. I think they all are at the point where the quality difference is pretty much meaningless as none pass as decent.
Some low light photos (with flash off) would be good to see as well. |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
i'll eat my hat if C is not taken with n900!

Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Wow, F wipes the floor with others!

lol what sort of hat do you have? I guess i can't help it but let you eat your hat haha. C is Sony Ericsson X10 Mini. Answer revealed at page 1. Shocking result really. Seems like iPhone 4 isn't better than N900 in taking picture. What about video? I'll get back to you all with another thread lol. For now E72 won hands down. I personally like F the most. Edit: Mixed up lol. Now it's correct. C is SEX10 |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Was there any detectable change in lighting conditions when F was taken? It looks so much better than the rest that I get suspicious :p
iPhone is the second best, IMO (with just a slight margin to others though). |

[No Fanboy] I thinks B looks best (colors) [/No Fanboy]

they are all **** against a mediocre 10 years old digicam! |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Great post - obviously took some effort and is appreciated. Certainly makes a good blog post or wiki page. I'd be interested to see the same thing posted on Andriod and iPhone forums and see the results.
What would have been great as well is a shot with a point and shoot and then a bridge or dslr to see how the scene should look. |

* compression and its effects * color correction and effects * detail saving * sharpening * optics * software decisions. Yes the exposure could be altered but really, if a camera consistently needs manual adjustment, is it not inferior to a camera that does not? Also, if a camera has poor optics and bad compression, color hue and whatever, does it matter how exposure did? F was the best in both light and dark. No contest. I expected N900 to beat iPhone. I really did. Stupid software. |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Too bad you couldn't let people rank the pictures....F definitely looks the best. A and B are quite close, though I do prefer B. I just like the colour balance better on B. The rest all are pans. Google bleeds colour. The less I say of D and E, the better. Quite disappointed with E really. SE have a history of producing some very nice camera phones, so extra negative marks to SE for not living up to it.

Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Now that you revealed which is which, can you post the full exif data for each of them?
Its seems like each camera used different settings for the same picture, and sometimes even a small change in the position of the camera can make a big difference. For example, it seems like in the flowers shot, the N900 camera focused on the closer trees and therefore the trees at the front pretty detailed but the distant trees came out a little blurry. The iPhone's picture focuses on further away objects, and so the trees at the top right are clears, while the closer trees look a bit blurry. Another effect is that the proportion of the sky in the picture (slightly different in each camera) can affect the exposure and white balance settings. Anyway, I kind of expected B to be N900: good color reproduction, good detail, reasonable dynamic range - though not the leader of the pack, and noisy at low light conditions (I guess its because it doesn't use aggressive noise reduction, and a bit too eager to switch to ISO400). |
Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
These rwo pictures are quite difficult to compare. The best and the worst can be different in these two pictures. I would say that flowers and colours are best in B and the evenig picture is absolutely best with F.

Re: Blind Test with Pictures quality
Unfortunately, the conditions would have changed. I could post a DSLR versus N900, but pics would be different and I only have the N900 for now.

Here you go:
Sony Alpha 200 DSLR versus N900 There are 3 tests: Outside: Sunny weather, with shade, high brightness. Both cameras on ISO 100. Low Light Both cameras on low light. It is a storage room from a bar, 3 meters by 8 meters, lit by 2 neon tubes. Low Light + exposure N900 was set to +2 exposure, judging by the time it took to shoot the ISO was ramped up to 400. To balance things out, A200 was also manually set to ISO 400. Finally, both images have been set to N900's resolution (width). As a result, Alpha 200's image has been resized to 3872/2576 (1.5031). Because resizing is done to one-and-a-half pixels, some detail is lost. Also, I didn't know this, but N900 signed the image with ISO 800. Since it's not available, I didn't know and I took the DSLR at 400. Also, for some reason, Picasa thinks the A200 images have both been taken at ISO100. The RAW image correctly states ISO400. Attached Highlights: Low Light Noise (A200, N900) Outside noise (A200, N900) |
