I regularly use Xvid to both encode and decode and have the Ovi suite installed, and have never had any kind of problem.
Have you considered that just maybe this is an issue with the setup of your machine and codecs, rather than defaulting to "blame nokia"?

WMP started to try and decode with a codec called "Nokia XVID/DIVX Decoder filter". It was completely unable to decode xvid videos... so the answer to your question is yes...

Hahah thanks mate. I was considering doing that funny enough. Was hoping I might be able to watch Flash videos if I did it too...

Got a bit scared off by warranty comments and decreased life comments though :(

Interesting. So Nokia does install a filter. I guess it sets itself the default codec' I'm sure you can change it if there is some codec settings. If not, just install ffdshow and make it the default codec.

This is the reason I use a dedicated player which doesn't rely on Windows codecs. There is not even a single benefit sticking to WMP.

Now why do you blame Nokia in this community forum for some stupid windows issue? One from what I see only you have? And yes no one uses WMP because is fail like Internet Explorer and others (?!) built in programs.

No. Install a new player to get a lighter, better player with integrated codecs than the bloated Windows Media Player and having to fight with multiple different 3rd party codecs that gets installed on Windows. You are actually installing more stuff (codecs) on your Windows than necessary by sticking to using c**p WMP. I can only assume you aren't that savvy with Windows and might be blaming Nokia for the wrong reasons.

Some of your other complaints also happen with most other phones. Like iPhone and most of Android phones etc. Some, I've never had issues myself.

kmplayer kills vlc btw.

I work as a software developer so I'm fairly savvy... I'd rather have a single player such as WMP that allows me to install codecs as required than install software that comes bundled with codecs.

I can totally understand your point of view though. At least as you say your not wrestling with with c**ppy M$...

As for other phones, I'm not convinced that's the case, all my previous phones have had great software/hardware, including all my previous Nokia's... It's just the last 7/8 months that have been awful with Nokia.

I blamed them in a community forum as I figured that since the new Ovi Suite lots of users are going to start having this issue and will be looking for a solution which wasn't too easy to find.

It's nothing to do with Windows.

Fair enough if you think WMP and IE are fail. I'm not disagreeing am I? All I'm saying is that installing and selling duff software/hardware is unfair...

Well, if you are like me and want more control, the reasoning behind using WMp doesn't make sense. Just try out kmplayer and why it's touted as the best media player. Install and never worry about video playback again. Also, you get more control than any other player on this planet if you wish. Definitely recommended for your sake. Not for Nokia's. :)

Hahah! Cheers mate :) I may well give it a try at some point!

Btw, nice O/C article... I was reading it yesterday ironically!

Hey Guys,

There is an easy fix I did it a while ago, dont have my pc with my so I cant remember the exact details.

You need to run services.msc and disable the offending nokia service. You can get the name of the service (cant remember) when you recieve the error message when trying to play/encode divx.

Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.

Just had this problem myself with Ovi Suite taking over my Xvid/Divx Codec. Its a damn pain in the *** and rather fail on Nokia's part.

To just suggest "oh install VLC, kmplayer whatever" doesn't exactly fix the issue, just ignores it.

Next time i try to rip a DVD/ re-encode etc, id rather Divx or Xvid be used and not a Nokia Codec i didn't ask for in the first place.

People are free to use whatever software they like. but when someone is being nice and giving a heads up on the issue, i wouldn't expect the thread to turn into a load of "M$ is fail, IE is fail, i know better anyway" crap.

The issue is clearly caused by nokia's programmers.
