Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Another epic fail from Nokia.
I thought I'd better let everyone with the same problem as me know. The solution is to uninstall that POS software and swap your Nokia for an Android. |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
So it stops xvid working on your PC or on the n900 after it's connected?
|
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Stops the PC working... It installs a faulty codec on the PC so it can't play Xvid any more.
The original codec exists but seems to take a lower priority than the Nokia one (even if you reinstall it after the Nokia Suites). I think divx is ok (probably cause the divx package has so much running in the background and gives you the option of making it the default codec). |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Just install kmplayer and play videos the way it's meant to be played on a Windows PC without worrying about system codecs. (it's the best media player for windows and it's free) http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/

Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
I don't really like installing software on my computer that I don't need. I don't really need any other players because WMP is built in...
Also, working around problems just gives Nokia an excuse to continue with their perpetually c**p Nokia software and hardware.... Install a new player because of PC suite, get a new email account because of Modest and MfE, find a new website because of MicroB and flash, use a different phone because of rubbish speakers, miss calls because of screen glitches, etc, etc, etc... I've enjoyed Nokia's for years and years but this is all just inexcusable. |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Or could it be a problem with Windows codec handling? Just use VLC, it works.
|
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Well I'm sure both them pieces of software are better and more reliable but why on earth are Nokia installing codecs that don't work on our PCs... :(
|
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Exactly what codec do you imagine Ovi is installing and in what way is it preventing Xvid from functioning?
I regularly use Xvid to both encode and decode and have the Ovi suite installed, and have never had any kind of problem. Have you considered that just maybe this is an issue with the setup of your machine and codecs, rather than defaulting to "blame nokia"? |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
O/T for OP: Flashing your emmc to the stock image, overclocking and then installing little or no apps should resolve the phone call answering issue. Dare you happen to be doing anything while a call comes in

Some of your other complaints also happen with most other phones. Like iPhone and most of Android phones etc. Some, I've never had issues myself. kmplayer kills vlc btw. |

Got a bit scared off by warranty comments and decreased life comments though :( |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Interesting. So Nokia does install a filter. I guess it sets itself the default codec' I'm sure you can change it if there is some codec settings. If not, just install ffdshow and make it the default codec.
This is the reason I use a dedicated player which doesn't rely on Windows codecs. There is not even a single benefit sticking to WMP. |

I can totally understand your point of view though. At least as you say your not wrestling with with c**ppy M$... As for other phones, I'm not convinced that's the case, all my previous phones have had great software/hardware, including all my previous Nokia's... It's just the last 7/8 months that have been awful with Nokia. |

It's nothing to do with Windows. Fair enough if you think WMP and IE are fail. I'm not disagreeing am I? All I'm saying is that installing and selling duff software/hardware is unfair... |

Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Hey Guys,
There is an easy fix I did it a while ago, dont have my pc with my so I cant remember the exact details. You need to run services.msc and disable the offending nokia service. You can get the name of the service (cant remember) when you recieve the error message when trying to play/encode divx. Manni |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
Just had this problem myself with Ovi Suite taking over my Xvid/Divx Codec. Its a damn pain in the *** and rather fail on Nokia's part.
To just suggest "oh install VLC, kmplayer whatever" doesn't exactly fix the issue, just ignores it. Next time i try to rip a DVD/ re-encode etc, id rather Divx or Xvid be used and not a Nokia Codec i didn't ask for in the first place. People are free to use whatever software they like. but when someone is being nice and giving a heads up on the issue, i wouldn't expect the thread to turn into a load of "M$ is fail, IE is fail, i know better anyway" crap. The issue is clearly caused by nokia's programmers. |
Re: Ovi suite / Nokia PC suite stops Xvid Codec working.
This is how I solved a problem when xvid videos did not played after Ovi Suite installation.
1. Install InstalledCodec from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html and run it. 2. Locate "Nokia XVID/DIVX Decoder Filter" entry in the codecs list. Right click the entry and select "Disable Selected Item". |
