Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
So guys great news from Google. They updated mobile version of Youtube which now plays ALL videos through standard media player. Quality is not great but website is very fast and media player plays without any issues :) , one thing though ( I seems you need to install extra codec pack ) but afaik most people have it so enjoy :)

Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Thanks for the update and it's about time. It would be nice if the player automatically pics the best quality at start up.

Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Well video is in 3gp format mostly that's why it looks bad however in that blog they mentioned couple of times that soon all vidoes will be in Web M format which looks promising

The N810, does it have this codec pack available?
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
man, i wonder what kind of compute power is required to convert all of youtube to another format?
i ha*v like 600GB of video and converted it once and it took forEVER! |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Youtube Mobile doesn't even look remotely close to the one on the video for me.
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
"all of youtube to another format"? Wut? Normal computers can convert videos to webM easily. just the upload time that will be slow.
Anyway, 600gb is too much.. i dont believe you. unless it is a RAW movie film. (you know, the rolling film they use in movies) |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
The new leanback feature works surprisingly quite well on the default browser too.

Software Keyboards on iphones do just a goood of a job dont they?
I'll be updating my links to use this... i've been after a decent youtube app for then n900 that includes options for likes, playlists ect... and we have nothing that uses all the functions. This for me is a god send ! |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Wow.
We have come back full circle to the WMV-era. Embedded videos launching, streamed in external media players. |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
when i visit m.youtube.com i get the old mobile site ? =(
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I think i get the old site too.. any video i click on opens media player with file not found error.
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I guess its only for Android and Iphone.
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I get the old plain listing mobile site. New site works but you need to install the extra decoders pack if you read above.
But i don't actually get to view the newer site. Can users confirm if they are doing this in the Micro Browser ? |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I managed to get it working by changing the User Agent to the same as Android 2.2 (Froyo)
EDIT: Nevermind, doesn't let me watch the video. |

Doesn't appear to work with hide usr agent either. I'm not 100% sure who has had this working on there n900 but if you could report back here how you did it :)

Also I don't think they converted all videos but just the new ones on uploading and the old ones on demand when someone wants to see them (real time transcoding is not that much of a problem, and there shouldn't be too many transcodings as you can save the converted movie once someone saw it). |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Well everything (leanback & m.youtube.com) seems to work just fine for me.
But I still don't get how any of this can really benefit anyone using MicroB. I mean the original site is the easiest to use and MicroB opens that site up perfectly. I guess I'm missing something here... Sometimes I feel that people are forcing themselves to treat Maemo as if it was Android ( = less developed in web browsing terms) :D |

Users here sometimes want a good finger friendly alternative while on the move. MicroB is great... websites on it... sometimes not so great ! |
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Best YouTube experience on N900 (considering Quality & Speed) is latest version of MediaBox. It has integrated YouTube in to the Videos section, and the search works a treat, and you have an integrated player.

Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
Changed my user agent to Android Froyo - loads the new mobile you-tube but non of it works using it like this.
Unable to play videos, unable to click majority of buttons :) |

Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I don't get a HQ button on http://m.youtube.com
I can play the videos but the quality is at a very low quality, I bet this is just a adjustment so that the android and iphone users get the same "experience" |

Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
it's because the new site uses html5 and microb has poor html5 support. using one of the webkit browsers may yield a better experience.
|
Re: Youtube goes mobile , real MOBILE
I tried this today and the audio/video was very jumpy and skippy. That was over 3g...I should try it on wifi.
I am not happy with performance, but I will give youtube kudos for breaking out of the siloed app-store world and offering a universal mobile client. I'm sure it will get better. |
