Automatically checking for email
Something has changed with my N900.
I have an email address which is set up to check the server for mail every five minutes. I spend most of my time in any one of a number of WiFi hotspots which are set up as "Internet Connections". If a message was available, it would "load" on to the N900 at the five minute update interval, and the blue notification light would flash. If there was no message, clicking on the email icon (:@"), it would say "Last updated on XX:XX (time)". Recently, it seems these updates are not happening automatically. When I click on the email icon (:@"), it tells me "Last updated Refreshing". It may not update for several hours, or not at all, or then again, for no reason that I can see, it will eventually do what it is supposed to do. I have Maemo 5 version 10.2010.19-1.002 installed. I reinstalled that software, and set up all functions new. However, I still have the same problem. Help, anyone??? Thanks! |

Re: Automatically checking for email
POP3 email has unfortunately been broken since PR1.2, and the official bug-fix doesn't seem to be much of a priority :(.

Re: Automatically checking for email
I would consider downgrading to PR1.1 .
HOW would one go about that? Thanks! |

There's several solutions and work-arounds, but I wonder if extracting Modest from PR1.1 and installing it is an option? |

Today (2010-07-13) the function worked like a charm, till 2:30 pm. Then, it started giving me the "Refreshing" message. Why would it work great for 6 or 7 hours (I switched the unit "on" about 7:00 am)? Is that indicative of a software problem? Sigh . . . . |
Re: Automatically checking for email
Pop3 sucks anyways. IMAP ftw.

Re: Automatically checking for email
Why not to try Nokia Messaging. IMO it works really fast and reliable. :)

@tushyd:
Well I setted mine up with IMAP on my website's mail server and it has the same problem as the POP3. Problem: Till now it used to check every 5 minutes and blink if a new mail has arrived, now I sended test mails to the account on the phone and even if I press "SEND & RECIEVE" it updates the "Last refreshed" but it isn't downloading the mail (and if I login from webmail it's there, unread). I got a test mail sended 2 days ago just now on my screen, I thought I am the only one with this problem. |

Is Nokia Messaging their equivalent of Push Email? I went to several Nokia sites to get info, but nothing seems to work. |

With a PC or your N900 Goto: http://email.nokia.com Setup an account if you don't have one. Setup the email servers you want to check. On your N900: Menu > Email > Next > Service Provider > Nokia Messaging. At this point it should try to sync. your email. If not click on Email > Send & Receive. One slightly confusing point is if you are only using Nokia Messaging you uncheck Email > Settings > Update automatically. I hope I didn't omit too much info:D Take care. |
Re: Automatically checking for email
I have this bug as well, the default 30 min interval results in no sync.
However, if I change it to 5 mins, it works.... am not sure for how long since I just realized this bug is affecting the N900 and haven't tested the 5min interval for an extended period. Will post back if anything changes. |

I went to the link (above) but haven't got a clue how to got to the "insides" of my phone (incidentally, I have no such problems with my desk-top Windows XP) Can someone help me out, or point me to some good tutorials which I would be able to understand? Thanks! |
