now the question is is api for those maping sites similar? i mean if user replaces url of osm with url of google map will it work without changing any other settings/codes? if yes then I don' see any point not to allow users to add custom url in your app. i hope this is the case.

Right now CloudGPS would not violate terms of service of Google and others. The problem is that planned features will eventually come in conflict with with them. CloudGPS already supports OpenStreetMap compatible tile providers, and Google should be working quite well. Try adding something like this to /opt/cloudgps/providers.ini in order to test it out:
Code:

[Google Maps]
fileFormat=/home/user/MyDocs/.maps/Google Maps/%d/%d/%d.png
urlFormat=http://mt.google.com/vt?z=%d&x=%d&y=%0d
minZoom=0
maxZoom=20

[Google Satellite]
fileFormat=/home/user/MyDocs/.maps/Google Satellite/%d/%d/%d.png
urlFormat=http://mt.google.com/vt?lyrs=s&z=%d&x=%d&y=%0d
minZoom=0
maxZoom=20

You propably should clear the Google tile cache frequently on your N900 to stay clean with its license. I'm afraid that other feautres (search and route) will be implemented in a way more tightly coupled with OSM and CloudMade. I will not be possible to add Google search to CloudGPS without heavy source code modification. Use at your own risk.

How do you toggle the Maps view and the Satellite View?

This seems to crash very quick with 1.3.

It is a VERY SMOOTH Crash though!

Press N on hw keypad to change to next provider. The crashing thing will be fixed in next release (about 10th November).

Very smooth UI, but also kind of confusing also. I have no idea how to use it for directions. Just looks like I'm looking at a giant map of the world. Also are there any pre built maps into this? Don't wanna have to load all the time

No routing yet. See the first post for a detailed description what this app can currently do. Also no bulk downloading yet but you can use ModRana for that.

Version 0.3.9 will be uploaded to extras-devel soon. Check out the preview video.

Version 0.3.10 has been uploaded (from my N900 on the road to airport) to extras-devel and first post is updated. You are going to love what I have done with zooming :)

Just found this and

WOW

very impressive, very smooth and the accelerometer is kinda addictive - loving it.

It tends to crash out on me regularly with google maps and satellite enabled though, I'll try it later on a faster connection.

Can not upgrade. App manager reports that file is corrupted.

Yep, the app got maps for the whole world :)
And yes you need to connect to the internet to download maps. But you can also use it in offline-mode and just watch the maps you have already downloaded.

This is an awesome app. Didn't think the n900 could have a map application as fast and smooth as this one :) And the way you can use the accelerometer in this app is just mindblowing :)
Thanks for an awesome app!

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.3.10 - smoothest maps for N900

I like this application very much but I'm unable to upgrade from 0.2.9 to 0.3.10.

Getting the following message (Faster Application Manager):
"The following packages have unmet dependencies: cloudgps: Depends: libsdl-ttf2.0 (>= 2.0.9-1osso1+0m5) but is is not installable
E: Broken packages".

Tried to fix this by following instructions described at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...=libsdl-ttf2.0 but wihout success. These instructions were for PR1.2 and something may have changed along with PR1.3.

Has anyone faced the same problem? Any ideas for sorting this out??

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.3.10 - smoothest maps for N900

AWESOME!!

I just discovered this application and it's like ... futuristic!! Wonderful use of OpenGL with our N900 devices.

Smooth to the max, great zoom, compass, everything!!

Problems: Only one problem for me, it closes itself after a few seconds of fingering without showing any error. I installed 0.3.10 without any problem. Using PR 1.3. No matter what provider I use.

Questions: where are the maps stored? I mean the tiles downloaded while mapping.

Suggests: 1.- Possibility to search coordinates. 2.- Save favorites somehow.

Thank you!!!

That is problem no. 1 at the moment and I will try to fix it and release fixed version before working on other features. The point of the 0.3.10 release was to have new features released for the conference.

The tiles are stored in /home/user/MyDocs/.maps directory. This directory is used by Maep, Mappero and ModRana at the moment. ModRana also supports sqlite tile storage which CloudGPS will also support in a distant (like next year) future.

This problem did occur for 0.3.9 version (I think the root cause was that source files uploaded had modification time set in the future because I am in different timezone and I think tarballs are not timezone aware). It was fixed by 0.3.10 release.

About this, please consider to accept coordinates in all different posibilities: Degrees mm ss or Degrees mm or just Degrees. At least on my case, I use to handle two or three types per trip, depending on the source, and I must be combining translators websites for the conversion which is very annoying.

In any case, thanks. :)

Does anyone knows how to download the maps for a country from OpenStreetMap so they can be used offline with any of these applications?

I'm thinking that a MapsManager application to download maps from different sources such as OVI, OpenStreetMaps and Google could be very useful.

FYI sqlite might be too slow:

http://aciqra.caglow.com/articles/18

Quote:

It was only a few months ago, in July, when the idea came up to use SQLite to power the graphics of Aciqra II. At the time, it seemed like a great idea. SQLite is fast, ate up little memory and is easy to implement. Even though this was confirmed by tests conducted before the process began, what was not clear was that it is not fast enough. SQL database systems are built to do many things but powering a graphics engine is not one of them.
An investigation into the source of the slowness led to the discovery that each SQLite query takes up to 0.2 seconds to execute.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.3.10 - smoothest maps for N900

I doubt that sort of time delay will affect CloudGPS - it's certainly going to be faster than downloading the map tiles.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.3.10 - smoothest maps for N900

very smooth indeed! thanks for great app! I'm also using modrana with sqlite as its taking much much less space. I hope cloudgps can share sqlite with modrana in future :)

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.3.10 - smoothest maps for N900

Version 0.3.11 is uploaded to extras-devel. This version has stability issues fixed and faster tile loading times (4x less on CPU).

I am sorry to inform you that GMapCatcher produces directories that are not compatible with OpenStreetMap naming scheme and it will not be (easily) possible to use it with CloudGPS. I know modRana has bulk downloading feature and it worked pretty well last time I tried it. I do not know of any PC software that does the job. Maybe other users would like to share which tool works?

Thanks.

This is friggin amazing.

This UI, smoothness and coolness, but with the features of Mappero + Geocaching + Foursquare + Gowalla + Facebook Places... and we'd be going somewhere :)

What? Did I go overboard now? ;)

Amazing nontheless.

Thanks.

Really!

There should be an award!!
