Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

I have noted that besides distance to destination bug (inaccurate value) route overview flyby gets stuck sometimes. In that case you can change zoom level and it should "un-stuck".

Also note that route overview flyby is scrolling at almost constant speed on screen. This means that you will be able to control flyby speed by changing zoom levels.

Well, I have my hands tied with new releases till the end of voting on MCC2011. Besides some known issues the app just works and provides . I have decided to promote it to Extras. When the Extras Testing voting link will start working please make your vote.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

Hi,

I recently updated cloudgps on my N900, via an on-line update, after which I could not get any maps to show, which was working perfectly before the update.

Have tried to uninstall and then reinstall, but it remains without any maps showing - can anyone help?

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

I really like CloudGPS and it works great on my N900. However, maybe I am missing something but is there no "help function"? I keep forgetting which key is used to switch map providers etc. It would be really helpful if CloudGPS could show the key mapping (for example by pressing "h").

Yes, help window(may be pop-up) would be really nice

Hi, thanks for this great app. It's the only useful OSM-app for the N900.

But one thing for the navigation. You wrote that I can choose between CloudMade and Google. How can I switch?
I think CloudMade provides routing for bicycle too. Can you make this configuratable too please?

Good idea. An semi-transparent overlay even?

READ THE FIRST POST! All the instructions are there.

Press 'S' to change search provider.

As to the people who are having difficulty remembering the 4-5 buttons used in this program (do you remember how to spell your own name?). Dwarz has said he will address this later, currently there is a 'feature freeze' till after the coding competition.

.

Have a wee neb at post #1 again. I counted 19 along with varying combinations ; you must be missing out on a whole load of features if you've only been pressing 4, or maybe 5 :).

Hey, Ive been usıng cloudgps as I drove from Cyprus fom the UK (3000 miles) and it has proved to be an extrmely valuable appliclation for routing and trackiıng current positıon.

Otherthan a few minor glıtches it has served extremely well as an offline GPS application, and much better online as a routing app.

There is just one improvement I can suggest to an otherwıse fantastic app that İ,ve needed on this trip:

*Record button - to track how many miles you have covered (useful offline)

and thats ıt - I could dıe happy

I plan to add tracking (showing all points from GPS as a lines) as well as track calculator in one of next releases. Track calculator will show distance passed, speed statistics etc.

would it be possible to integrate the app with Google Latitude?

is that in your plans?

Integration with social sites is not planned in near future. It may be implemented later as a plugin for CloudGPS.

Could you try running /opt/cloudgps/cloudgps from terminal and paste the output after the crash here? There should also be /tmp/cloudgps-query-tmp.js file with the results from geocoding provider. Please attach it here.

this file doesnt exist.
i cant find it in this path.
maybe thats the reason why the app closes when i search for something.

You had this file earlier - when you tried to execute it you got 'permission denied' because it is not an executable file. Please check again because I suspect that the crash is caused by different format of returned json response. This file should contain the actual response and it would be fairly easy to spot the crash cause by looking at its contents.

Couple other questions:
1. Which search provider are you using? (it is saved in /home/user/.cloudgps/config.ini in geocodingProvider line)

2. Does the crash occur when using other providers (press s, shift+s to cycle providers)?

If /tmp/*.js file really is not there after the crash it would help to debug the app using gdb. That will require to adding sdk repository, installing gdb, and debugging the app using it. Are you willing to do that? I will guide you of course if you do.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

alright, have been testing 0.5.6 on my travels. some feedback. some you may be already aware of.

soooo smooth. even the new motorola xoom tablet with all new google maps is not this smooth

route tracking
- the line to follow disappears regularly, even when walking.
- the directions and distance dialogue is often wrong and quite hard to read.
- long pressing on the map to bring up the menu to place markers/clear can sometimes end up in odd locations and off the screen making menu unusable.
+ what would be handy with route tracking is if it preloads the tilemaps for the route programmed at current zoom levels. if you change zoom level it should precache again. sometimes when travelling 'fast' on full google satellite hybrid it can get left far behind :(
+ checking to make sure you are on the current route. if not, re-route from current position.

tiling and rendering (mainly using google satellite/hybrid)
- sometimes there are lines and gaps between the tilemaps in 2d and 3d mode.. they come and go.
- sometimes there are issues rendering cached tiles completely and then it completely stops renderering any tiles cached or not. have to restart to restore. caching issue or renderer locked ?

other
- sometimes when in bad areas and gps reception comes and goes, the map can bounce around from where you are (gps lock) to some place miles away (a-gps) and back and forth. it sometimes closes cloudgps via a clean exit. it doesnt show any error in terminal
- when starting cloudgps, although i have 0.5.6 installed, it says v0.5.5 in the top left corner.

get a couple of errors in terminal sometimes on starting up it closes straight down.

drawGLScene GL_ERROR: 500
and
Segmentation fault

thanks again for the best mapping tool ever!

Thanks for your feedback. There are few problems mentioned that I was not aware of. I will briefly respond to each of your observations.

I have not seen that on my devices. The only thing that I know of is that the route is drawn using all points, capped at constant number of points. So if a route is very long (more than 200-300km in practice) only a part of route will be drawn (from start to some point). This will be addressed in one of next versions.

Could you provide more detailed description of what is happening and maybe some steps to reproduce the problem?

This is first release with routing and this issues are known and will be addressed.

Some info about workarounds: popup menu works properly only when facing north (pressing compass icon will make that) and only in 2d. Markers should work facing any direction but only in 2d.

And of course I will work on these issues on next releases.

CloudGPS does preload some area around current view and forward. If download is too slow to do that precaching will also not work.

You can also use route overview flyby to preload tiles around the route.

That is quite easy. Will be there in one of next versions.

Red lines are drawn around tiles that failed to load or download. This is not really user friendly and I will remove it. I spent some time trying to avoid the gaps but it is quite hard.

At least in 2d when facing north there are no gaps and maps should be pixel-perfect on N900.

Rendering should never get locked. I use CloudGPS quite extensively and it just never does. Tile loading on the other hand can easily get locked. Tile loading uses only two threads on N900 (I benchmarked it and it is the most optimal value for N900). When there are two downloads in progress every new download request gets queued until one of those two finish because starting new thread is just too heavy for N900. Downloading currently uses blocking API and this means that it can easily get stuck waiting for data from network. I plan to rewrite downloading using non-blocking API so that:
- there will be many simultaneous downloads possible (up to twenty for example) per one thread,
- downloads that are in progress and are not necessary anymore will be canceled,
- downloads stalled will be canceled and retried,
- it will use even less resources than current implementation.

This should resolve the issue you described and should also improve responsiveness and tile loading time a lot.

CloudGPS shows your current locations as it is served by backing location service. Currently it is liblocation and it will probably be changed to QT Mobility in next version. No matter which API it uses the behavior should never get close to what you described. I have no idea what could be wrong, what you described clearly negates what is said about GPS in liblocation documentation for Maemo. Are you using CSSU?

There was an dependency error in 0.5.5 package and I reuploaded the same package with dependency fix without changing the version in sources. Package version had to be incremented because otherwise it would be rejected by autobuilder. Preparing the version for MCC2011 was a real marathon for me. I was coding for almost whole two days and nights in a row. I knew that the release will have more bugs than previous one but I wanted to add routing, turn-by-turn directions and route flyby.

GL_ERROR: 500 can be safely ignored. The other thing indicate some stability problem. If you are able to make the app crash please post steps to reproduce the crash here. I am currently not aware of any situations that will make it crash in practice. In theory there are many things that can go bad - for example non-parsable search results will probably make the app crash. I will also use valgrind for next releases which should improve stability.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

Hi dwaradzyn!
Many, many thanks for this great app!
I'm searching for something to use for offroad navigation (something like o z i explorer) and i think that your app is the solution for our beloved device.

I'm looking for a way to load all my calibrated maps or a way to convert the maps downloaded with mobac but it seems that cloudgps uses a /dir/filexyz.png format while mobac creates a /dir/filexyz.jpg....
At this point i can create a script to convert all file in png but considering the allocated space, jpg would be a really better solution.

Do you think that it would be possible to choose also jpg as storage files?
And what do you think about sqlite storage? (like modrana)

or.... integrate:
http://code.google.com/p/swampex/

No need for conversion because jpg is supported and should work out of the box. Just change appropriate fileFormat entry in /opt/cloudgps/providers.ini so that CloudGPS will be able to find your tiles.

Both sqlite storage and using custom image as map (among many other features) are planned.

First time playing with CloudGPS this afternoon; very impressed indeed.

One immediate thought, as a new user, is that I can't immediately remember all the keyboard shortcuts from the first post, so it would be nice if CloudGPS itself had a help screen, possibly by typing a "?" character.

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

Hi.

I didn't read through everything so you may have heard this already:
1) Awesome smooth, really.
2) Cool of you to answer questions thoroughly.

It is however still kinda buggy:
1) Sometimes the tap-hold-menu isn't showing in 3D mode, in which case I have to switch to 2D and back.

2) Routing does not work for me. 'route download error' no matter which search provider. Tried several routes in different countries, even short ones. The CLI shows some errors when using cloudmade:
Code:

D/l error 6: Couldn't resolve host name for URL: 'http://routes.cloudmade.com/e4b1777b4b5154d69dbfc4678216183a/api/0.3/52.522414,13.173012,52.523737,13.181298/car.js?units=km&lang=en'
Search URL: http://routes.cloudmade.com/e4b1777b4b5154d69dbfc4678216183a/api/0.3/47.377031,8.548404,47.375315,8.558176/car.js?units=km&lang=en
D/l error 6: Couldn't resolve host name for URL: 'http://routes.cloudmade.com/e4b1777b4b5154d69dbfc4678216183a/api/0.3/47.377031,8.548404,47.375315,8.558176/car.js?units=km&lang=en'

Also errors like these (with cloudmade urls) show up even when using google as the search provider.

3) The A and B markers look weirdly tilted backwards in 3D mode, they should rather be at 90° to map surface imo.

4) Sometimes it just crashes while panning but I was'nt abe to reproduce this consistently

5) Cannot use dead keys to input umlauts. I have ¨ bound to a key on my n900 to make ö out of ¨ and o for example. they don't appear in cloudgps.

6) Bogus search results. E.g. 'kurfuerstendamm' (a road in berlin) takes me to 'valencia street' in san francisco. Plus search results aren't context sensitive. Instead of taking a (geographically) close match it often takes me to US cities with similar names.

7) Segfault when tapping the goggles and typing something, then hitting enter, can't reproduce this now but last time it happend constantly.

Good job though!

hi

have been using this amazing app for ages and its perfect

i have recently noticed that it now supports OS mapping in the UK

i was wondering if there is anyway i can save the OS maps on my N900 as i am going to north wales camping/walking next week and battery and reception will be a real issue.

I read the first page of this thread which says it is possible to use maps offline but I couldnt make much sense of it.

Thanks

Long term plan is to make CloudGPS usable without keyboard. Since there is high demand for help screen I think it will be included in a release right after MCC2011 is finished.

Mobile Atlas Creator is a great tool to get offline maps. There is a lot of info about it on the net, including video tutorials (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4exhu4EThE). Just google it.

1. Are there any error messages when you launch /opt/cloudgps/cloudgps from x-terminal?
2. Could you paste the contents of /home/user/.cloudgps/config.ini file here? Then try deleting it and launching CloudGPS again.

Ad. 1. 3. 4. 5. 7. I am aware of those bugs and working on fixing them.

Ad. 2. Please try adding this line:
Code:

forceIPv4=1
to [Network] section in /opt/cloudgps/cloudgps.ini file and report back if it helped with your problem.

Ad. 6. This is intended behavior. Google Local Search is the only search provider sensitive to current location on screen. All other searches are not location aware. You should use searches like "street, city" for them to return sensible results.

"1. Are there any error messages when you launch /opt/cloudgps/cloudgps from x-terminal?
2. Could you paste the contents of /home/user/.cloudgps/config.ini file here? Then try deleting it and launching CloudGPS again.[/QUOTE]"

Ok so i launched from xterminal and this is what i got " 2 batteries foundddrawGLScene GL_ERROR: 500"

and this is the info inside that path you told me to look at:

"[CurrentView]
zoom=0
tilex=14464
tiley=2147483644
x=239.864013671875
y=-inf

[Options]
provider=OpenStreetMap I
tileProvider=OpenStreetMap I
geocodingProvider=Google Maps Local
routingProvider=CloudMade
loadLastRoute=0"

Any idea on what the problem would be? would you try to help me to get it to work?

thanks in advance.

Thanks for your bug report. I did not have access to Internet yesterday. The problem is that y=-inf. I will fix that in next version. For now just delete /home/user/.cloudgps/config.ini and it should work on next launch.

While looking at the project page of cloudgps to view some part of sources i found that the svn repo is not updated.
Do you have any other public place to take a look at this?

thanks in advance.

That is correct - I am not updating garage svn anymore. The project will probably move somewhere else. Anyway you can always find sources for latest released version in extras-devel repository using this link:

Artwork is always appreciated, thank you. I think the best way to create new looks for CloudGPS would be to attach screenshot with your new icons here and let the community say what do they like and what improvements they wish.

I have to reflash my phone today so I will try your icons afterwards and let you know what I think.

I would also love to see some concept screenshots of what would be your dream UI for CloudGPS. A wireframe (basic layout sketched on piece of paper) will also do. It is high time that the UI for CloudGPS should be reworked to make it look prettier and more modern.

...just a sample of the modified buttons... with some update

I would modify the satellite signal bars to make them clear blue (like nokia theme) when there is a fix (so it is more evident when using in a car).
Is it possible?

If someone would try this, copy all the png inside the archive into /opt/cloudgps/res/ overwriting existing files.
Pay attention, backup the original files to go back to the original style.

PS. zoom-knot does not respect colors.... i don't know why..

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried Mobile Atlas Creator but there is no option for UK OS maps.

I did google it but no luck there.

Is there anyway to view a certain area in cloudgps and then that area will remain saved?

Re: [WIP] CloudGPS 0.4.8 - smoothest maps for N900

@HWKB

search for:
"Mobile Atlas Creator 1.9 beta 1.zip"

Anyway, cloudgps always keeps downloaded data.

@dwaradzyn

for the next release, a little request:
could you add some shortcut or better a setting to increase the preload/predownload area? (the one visible on debug with the H key)
