Nope, I'd claim on the insurance and rescue the one I'd dropped.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

i pressed no, but i'm not sure. i own it for 2.5 months now i like it. however, as much as i love the device and it answeres all my needs, i feel like you have to plan ahead.

There is only one thing we all know for sure. maemo 5 will be dead in a year or so and we dont know what kind of OS we will get with meego.
so now, with the device getting older i find spending money on it(even 300Euros) seems abit foolish. My guess is that ill wait, as at the moment there is no decent device out there that i feel like it can replace the n900.

3 months ago, when i ordered my device i didnt know about meego not being offiically coming for n900, however i dont regret getting it even for one second. but like i said every dawn brings a few new HTC's ;p

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Simple answer... No!

I have become quite disillusioned with the N900. No, thats a little unfair... More like very P***ed off with nokias lack of support for the Maemo handset!

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I am actually just pondering this question. No, the N900 did not drop into the toilet, but my wife found out that the device suits her well for her work. So I am left mostly N900-less:

I am looking for:
- GSM
- unlocked
- physical keyboard
- multitasking
- configurable to my taste
- usable as phone, PIM, musicplayer, websurfer,

I know the shortcomings of the device pretty well, but I cannot find any competing device with similar capabilities at a similar price ($400 at Amazon today).

So will I buy????

This is a bit offtopic, but hopefully will help in soothing some of those "the death of maemo" fears:

While maemo won't get any official updates, I wouldn't say it will be dead in a year, because with the current trend of ushering both Symbian and MeeGo towards Qt a lot of the applications that will be released for either OS will also work on maemo.

Add that I'm pretty sure that this community will resume to get out great applications for the internet tablets and I think there's hope we'll have a couple years of fun with maemo ahead of us despite the terrible lack of Nokia support.

no i would claim on the insurance. last time i claimed on insurance they sent me a cheque to use at a phone shop... in this situation wouldn't get a n900 again

I looked at the motorola. The milestone / droid is more expensive ($450 and up), the keyboard feels really flimsy. I did not like the device.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

way to many bugs, I would go droid x or similar high end android phone with full qwerty.
The weird issue where something makes the cpu go to 100% and almost all ram is in use while the phone should be on idle is just too much. Nokia needs to fix this or DJ Steve needs to complete his android port to n900 with success.
The inability to support mms natively (no the mms client while good is not integrated fully into the OS), to fail to support google calendar, mails and tasks is a joke. The media player is powerfull but the controls are awful.

Just to many issues, many of them easy to remedy, but not likely...

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I think I would cry a bit if I dropped my N900 in the toilet. I don't know of any other device that could do everything the N900 can do that's available for TMO US. There are many rumoured devices coming this upcoming holiday season which might be able to, but for now there is nothing. I love my device dearly, and have been happy with it for the last 8 months, but I think I would use my old sidekick LX until the new devices hit the market. Sadly, I think my answer would be no, I would not buy another N900.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Yes, definitively. The N900 is something I actually need, it is not a toy.

Until something similar comes out, likely again from Nokia, there is no viable alternative in the market, for me.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

It's starting to be yesterday's news already, so no. I've already had mine far longer than I usually own my phones... 7 months, almost 8!

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I'm having a love-hate relationship with the N900.

I loved it the first 2 months. Then got pissed off the next 3 at Nokia for being late at getting PR1.2 out and the lack of software.

I'm still pissed at Nokia, but am falling back into loving the N900. I've been sitting at home editing pictures, arranging my passwords/cards and other information into the Wallet app. Arranging items in Sygic Maps and just in general goofing off with the phone. Printing by Cups and saving as PDF in Firefox, connecting to my networked DroboFS and to the office's network servers. "Scanning" through the picture-scan program that's available etc.

Quite nice.

I've got a 3 year warranty on my device, so they'd supply me with another one. So I guess I'd get another one, otherwise I don't know.

Yes, I would buy another one immediately. After 4-5, its growing on me, and I am discovering more and more uses for it.

I am not a developer or unix dork.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

No,as much as I like it I usually only use a device for 6 to 8 months or so. I waiting to pick up the samsung galaxy s tomorrow. The is an awesome device, one of my favorite, but if ot broke, couldnt see myself buying it again.

jakiman 2010-07-15 00:02

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Not sure. I might just get a cheap phone and wait for next-gen mobile phones end of year or next year.
or might just get a Samsung Galaxy S as I use my phone as a video player heavily and N900 falls behind in this area.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I love it so much.
But because I am ****-poor, I would have to do horrible horrible things to buy another one (which would definitely be worth it).

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

As much as I love the phone it would be hard paying $400 for old tech and uncertain software, even tho it is a beast. There's nothing on the market thats topping the N900 imo so I would proabably get a used blackberry or something to hold me over.

i will go for another one.

first mobile computer/tablet device with phone functionality that i have.

this phone will go on to history as one of the greats with its power, openness, and gazillion f**king quirks.

wouldn't you want to be part of history, again?

droll 2010-07-15 02:34

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

i would buy one in a heartbeat. i don't care about the hardware, low mega pixel, no gyroscope etc. this is literally a mini computer in my hand with linux to boot. all my years of using smartphone, this is the only device that has lived up to my dreams.

dharder 2010-07-15 02:57

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

To be honest... I don't think I would. If it were 8 months ago, I thought there was NO other phone that suited me. But this my first unlocked phone and, in the US of A, that's rare. I would be willing to drop another $500-600 on a brand new phone but it'll likely be an unlocked Android phone for me next time.

We'll see what Meego's like, though. I do love being the only one on the block with a truly powerful phone. But Meego's gotta BLOW me away in order to make me think Nokia in the future. I love love love Nokia... But... I just... Couldn't.

This handset is about 8 months old. There is simply better hardware out there.

Same goes for me. I wouldn't be happy about having to fork out the cash again, but I would definately buy this phone again. Nothing else comes close imo.

Computer Science student. I'd definitely go with Android/HTC if it happened right now. Maybe MeeGo will turn out good once it's baked, but I won't speculate.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I'll buy a new one in view of current low price.

The interesting part I think is to make use of that literally stinking device.

It can a NAS, wifi access point, bluetooth NAP, web server, irc server, MUD server (as if anyone still mudding at all), etc.. Oh it can also run whole day for BT some....free 'clips' so that you can watch it on TV. Of course, you can make it a MP3 jukebox play the songs on your FM receiver in your car via FM-transmitter.

Any more idea?

Too expensive. I'd use my old phone until i save up for a newer meego device :p

If you dropped your n900 down the toilet then leave it there ha ha best place for it why? NO headaches NO frustrations NO updates needed !.

But if Meego turns out to be ok then go get it out the toilet and dry it out ha ha ha.

I did buy another one after losing my six months old one being stolen. I had an idea to buy an Android phone but after checking the features and style(including Nexus one), I had no other go, but go for the same N900 again. I use Skype, SIP VoIP more than GSM. The command line interface helps me work and learn a lot. N900 is more of a linux phone than any other one available today. I did not find a phone giving so much internal memory in this cost range.

How can this thread go for so long without anybody mentioning Trainspotting?

Edit: Here's the scene I'm referencing. Funny within the movie; but maybe just too gross out of context. If you don't want to be grossed out, skip this one.
