Probably yes, but I would also consider to option to wait for the N9.

I wouldn't buy any other phone which is on the market today.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

nope i wouldn't, the simple reason being that phones are my poison, whether they end up good or bad, i just have to change it for something different. i'm hoping that HTC are taking notice of andrew kims concept of the htc 1, because that phone is gadget porn.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

given i didn't actually 'pay' for my n900 in the first place ('free' on contract) cost ain't an issue for me. if it were, my answer would be no. advancements in the last year have put the n900's cpu in a much lower league compared to recent devices so on that basis, no, i wouldn't replace a year-old device with a year-old device.

saying that, i'm quite certain that i'm taking my n900 for granted and that within two weeks i would have made a long list of things i'm missing and that other phones can't do. happy with it for now, but will happily upgrade when my contract renews in a year.

I don't think I would either. I love the N900 as it is for what it is... but after the half-@$$ed support from Nokia, I'm not purchasing another one again.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I did drop mine down the toilet and it didn't affect it. Takes more than water to break a brick.

If I did break it though there's no way I would buy another one, mostly for pragmatic reasons (not the idealised fanboy-ism of others):

1. Its year old hardware.
2. Software/OS's have moved on a lot as well as the hardware in the last year.
3. You can't even get it new now - and I'd always avoid second hand phones.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Hi
Last week I did not drop my beloved N900 down the toilet but managed to brick it by inadvertently pouring hot water nearby that soaked through its case. I looked at trying a Milestone as a replacement but got put off by the mixed reviews and lack of FM radio, a must for me.

So, I shopped around for an good used N900, which led me to Carphone Watehouse and I purchased a used, 14 day return from them @ £265 including a O2 sim. The phone is immaculate, unlocked and unbranded, so I was able to pop in my T Mobile sim and get going!

Why did I buy another N900? Because I like the crazy thing! Ok, its got a terrible battery life and is buggy. However, I love the way that people like you have steadily been improving the handset through apps like FMMS and others. I love its messaging and browser too! Its a valuble tool for both communications and entertainment and will get better with your continued support.

Thank you
Jim

Talking of dropping phones down toilets, you need to ponder the Ambient Loo: http://haddadi.ir/comics/toilet.pdf

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Would I buy another - No. Why? Because I already have a brand new in-the-box spare just in case!

Sure there are things I'd like improved on the N900, especially battery life. But the broad market (apparently) doesn't care about battery life, real world useability, user programmability, etc. It only cares about shiney-shiney and 'mines newer, and more blingy than yours'. So on the odd occasion that a device escapes into the real world without the marketing department fscking it up, I reckon it's worth grabbing a spare :-)

Depends...Maybe the brown soft cream could prevent from any damage.

100% definitely YES !! (Although, it is highly impossible I would drop this phone as I love this phone more than my wife..)

I am no programmer or software developer.. But I absolutely love this phone, both for my Business use & Personal use..

I dont think there is any phone that even comes close to being as perfect as the Nokia N900..

And many many thanks to several programmers & experts on Maemo, they have helped in using the N900 to the optimum with their different programs & softwares and help..

I would use my N95 8gb until the N9 comes out later this year.

Of course, no other phone on the market lets me do what I can do with this. For working some times is a pleasure what I can do with it.

To the point: Yes. Device is pretty nice, hardware-wise, and the software is not it's fault. I wish I had 2 so I could experiment with another OS, but unfortunately I need it working.

By the time Meego device with better OMAP is out, I'll dry out. Next OMAP is almost identical, probably be just a clock difference, meaning OCd N900. Not worth it. I see a nice life with me and my N900, if only someone would fix a few of those annoying bugs.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Yes, I would buy another one (or try to make it work anyway).

But, if maemo.org didn't exist, then I wouldn't. With what it has out-of-the-box, it is rather poor.

The only complain is speed. I would love a 1G processor. And don't want to go to the work of overclocking it.

As a telephone, it works, and that's enough... I don't think I use more than 5 minutes per month. Now I use skype with the phone.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

There's so little work in OCing the N900 it's scary. OTA install, a simple command in the terminal and it's up and running. Try the OC thread for details.

I'll say this: There is no doubt in my mind N900 was designed at a higher speed. It was toned down in stress test, likely heat afterward or something. There is no way someone wrote animations they knew would stutter. It's so alive.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I've never had a phone like it. But if it broke for any reason, I wouldn't bother replacing it.

Some of the basic thing just don't work. Email/Calendar (I'm trying to sync both with Google Apps) don't perform as well as they should for a phone of this value.

Battery - it doesn't last a day for me. That's rubbish.

Freezing when a call is coming in. Also rubbish.

And all the amazing things (e.g. joikuspot wifi hotspot) can't make up for the incomplete results on the basics, so I'd leave it down the toilet. I'd just flush.

Does it do it after rebooting? Mine works fine after I switched to daily reboots.

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

I'm undecided.

I would consider buying another one, but only after doing as much research as I can about the competition (minus Apple, I refuse to purchase another iphone after my 1st-gen iphone..)

I also think it's astonishing how many people have voted 'no' in this poll. Granted the sample size (at the time of this post) is only about 250, a whopping 40% have voted 'no'.

It might be in Nokia's best interest to send out a quick 'yes or no' question via SMS to all users. Now those results would be interesting :)

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Would depend on what other devices were out there and whether my insurance policy is a "like for like" replacement or just pays out at the value of the phone.

Suurorca 2010-07-19 12:44

Re: If you dropped your n900 down the toilet - would you buy one again?

Yes, I would buy another one. Even at the launch prices, though that would make my heart bleed. There is just no way any other device at the moment could replace it. I'm not too hopeful about the N9-00, either. Perhaps Meego will be jut some crap limiting the user too much in the name of "usability". Luckily, mine is fully insured.

No, I would make no attempts to rescue the wet device. Even if it worked flawlessly after drying. There's just too big a risk that it would fail later. Especially as my insurance policy pays a lot worse for 2+ years old devices.

Nope, i will NOT get one even if it cost $50. Nokia screwed this one up.
