Would be nice to have that icon bar to select categories
Actually there is a version of Telescope in repos with bar. just update. But now it's very simple and looks not so nice :)

Quote:

But if I rename the internet category I should be able to manually bind the globe icon to it.
Yep, long tap on the category will open a dialog or something and user will able to select a different icon.

Quote:

There is also the problem of too many categories.
Yes it is. There is enough space for nine categories, but thats it. But I reaaly don't think somebody needs so many categories. There is no much software for Diablo, just it :(
There is another my idea that you may scroll this bar like mynook.ru launcher for nook: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO5jpgunFOE

Quote:

If the category spilled over into a second page
Maybe we can make a iphone-like thing: drag the screen to the left or right to change a page? But your idea is good too!

Thanks for comments!

If the category spilled over into a second page it could display the current page number and max page number on the selected icon and tapping that icon would cycle through the pages for that category.
What about this one?

I meant there is space for 9 icons and it will be perfectly nice. Of course you can make more categories, but it will be ugly.

This new bar is awesome! Why wasn't there an announcement about the release?

I think it would better if it had the current page number in one corner and the total number of pages in the other. Would help to show that the category has multiple pages and what page is showing. If you want to keep it graphical maybe you could add "folder tabs" along the top of the button representing each page and highlight the current tab in blue.

Are half of those multiple pages in the same categories?

I have 12 discrete categories (added a bunch to see if they would be shown), 3 have multiple pages.

Good. Lets try to make something like it. Tomorrow.

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

The new category bar doesn't draw the names in portrait mode. It also doesn't switch to desktop when the launcher background is tapped in portrait mode.

EDIT: After switching back to landscape the category names are gone. Restarting Telescope brings back the names in either orientation but they stop working as soon as the screen is rotated. The background tapping goes to desktop when the names are visible but stops working when the names are broken.

Mitrandir 2011-02-26 08:12

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Yes, portrait mode breaks it all. I will try to fix this today. Category bar will remain it's position while rotating. I mean, it will be at bottom in landscape and at left side in portrait mode.
Because we can pack 12 categories in 800px, but not in 480px :)

Telescope 2.0~rc10
  • Fixed font rendering that was not so accurate. Slight shadow added.
  • Portrait mode fixed. Now panel will not rotate with the screen. App icons will be rotated as before.
  • App icons layout changed a little: now icons will take full screen width

(Obviously, ‘2.0’ version was introduced too early...)

Overall, I love the new buttons. I really like how they're just simple, but attractive.

Thank you for all your great work!

Panel design is by Kroll

(And a little bit Opera, i guess ;) )

The tabs will appear only when you are in the category with more than 1 page.
*I don't like it, actually*

This new one is quite ordinary, but i do love it.
http://s2.itrash.ru/idb/3b5faa382eb1...fae3/otabs.png

To turn over a page tap on the category button second time or drag the background left or right.

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Telescope 2.0~rc11
  • Longtap on new panel in Launcher will allow to select icon for category. Icons are loaded from /usr/share/telescope/category-icons (you may add your own there). Associations between categories and icons are saved in ~/.telescope.cats.
  • Bug: If category is splitted on several pages, only one icon will be saved for both pages. Anyway, in next release we're planning to reimplement splitting of categories and make it like in Kroll's mockup in previous post.

Do you have a black desktop background or did you somehow make Telescope's background black?

just a black background.

Is Telescope's background supposed to mirror the desktop?

wondering because when I change my background telescope remains black. (granted that is a good look)

After you reboot or 'kill' the telescope the background will be the same of your wallpaper.

If anybody create icons share with us :)

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Yep, Telescope must be restarted when you change wallpaper. But it's better to run (as root):
/etc/init.d/telescope-svc restart
instead of just kill :) May be i will add wallpaper change detection in future releases, but this is low priority task.

Agreed, higher priority is adding config option to set different wallpaper for window thumbnails and launcher. ;)

I think it would be cool to have a separate background image for Telescope. As an option maybe; if that would be possible in a future update. I'm really liking it as it is, already. I especially like the simpified button layout in Kroll's post, (#254), earlier in this thread.

Mitrandir 2011-03-04 17:27

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

There is already the option to set custom background for telescope: add "background.filename = /path/to/file" to /etc/telescope.conf and restart Telescope.

I will try to implement category grouping like in Kroll's mockup soon.

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Thanks for the telescope task switcher, which is looking great and thus makes working with my N810 more fun. Together with Diablo 5 theme the N810 is a great new gem now.

For those, you have not yet tried it out, here are some of my notes, which I hope to be useful for someone:

Navigation
As described by silvermountain

Start Telescope: Home Key
Start Launcher: Press Home Key again
Go from Launcher to Telescope: Press Home key
Exit to Desktop (from Telescope): Tap any area outside of the app windows - or press Escape
Exit to Desktop (from Launcher): Tap any area outside of the app windows - or press Escape

Configuration

Principle configuration

(0) Control panel / Panels (within Personalization section) / Task navigator / Telescope launcher or Applications Organize
(1) Organize your applications in application categories

Manually changing the icons in category bar

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=255

(0) Start telescope by pressing the Home Key
(1) Press and hold on the application category (e.g, Internet) to add or change an icon -> a line on top of the bottom tab bar shows up
(2) Click on preferred icon

I use 14 categories. My max size icon is 64x64 which gets cut-off slightly at the corners; I use this larger icon for a major category.

File to change: /home/user/.telescope.cats

Code:

[Icons]
Internet=/usr/share/telescope/category-icons//web.png
Text=/usr/share/telescope/category-icons/emblem-office.png
(...)

Originally in telescope.cats there are 2 backslashes at the end in front of the file name, one also works fine.

Traditional category names
tana_fi_settings
tana_fi_extras
tana_fi_communication

Icon information:
file web.png
web.png: PNG image data, 53 x 53, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
phone.png: PNG image data, 48 x 48, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
emblem-desktop.png: PNG image data, 64 x 64, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

Icons installation
http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=121
(0) Select and download icons
(1) Untar (tar xzf icons.tar.gz) and select your favourite icons
(2) Move Icon to your image folder or to /usr/share/telescope/category-icons/
(3) Change icon within .telescope.cats (see above)

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Wow! Thank you for such compiled manual.
Telescope really lacks documentation. And the icon!
(Kroll, do you remember you draw some icon? :))

I can only add that if you are attracted to hacking things, Telescope also has a number of parameters that can be configured in /etc/telescope.conf.
Most of them affects visual appearance. For example, location of pixmaps, sizes of borders, colors, etc.
But there are also several parameters that can change its behavior.

Here is a link to my post with the list of the parameters (in russian :) ): http://n8xx.com/post52175.html#p52175
This list is little outdated. I will translate it to english and post here, also adding new parameters which were added recently.

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

@Mitrandir
A bug report:
telescope segfaults if ~/.osso/menus/applications.menu doesn't exist or is empty, causing a reboot loop if it is enabled as a startup service.
This file does not exist until the applications menu is personalized by the user. Also, this file may become empty accidentally if the disk fills out while installing a package, when the installed app tryes to update the menu.

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Thanks, maacruz! That was serious indeed.

Sorry that it has took a week to fix this. Solution was simple, but i'm really busy at this time ☹

Telescope 2.0~rc12
  • Fixed bug from previous maacruz' post
  • Now Telescope package has the icon!! Icons is © Kroll

I've just submitted rc12 to autobuilder, so it will take a bit of time to reach the repository

Oh and talking about icons, would it be possible to make the statusbar icon something other then a clone of the applications taskbar icon? Yea i am still using the maemo4 layout...

Kroll 2011-04-26 20:18

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Mitrandir meant Telescope package icons which you can see in Application manager or so. It looks like a galaxy in telescope task switcher window.
«Telescope. Switch the galaxy.» or something :D

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Yep, icon isn't a major change, especially for users who already have telescope installed :) But the icon was waiting for inclusion in next release for a couple of weeks. And now the bugfix brought it to life.

Anyway, i'm happy that telescope now has the icon at last :)

auouymous 2011-04-28 21:15

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

Is Telescope not releasing the X resources related to window thumbnails?

Open an app, switch to Telescope window thumbnails and switch back to desktop. X memory usage increases but doesn't return to its original size when the app is closed. Repeat with more apps and X continues to grow even when all apps have been closed. Restarting Telescope returns X to its original size.

Opening the same app twice doesn't increase X's size which makes me think Telescope might be caching the images but either not expiring them or has a long expiration time and not using a cache size limit because my X can hit 50-100meg.

Mitrandir 2011-04-29 04:32

Re: [Announce] Telescope: Graphical task switcher with thumbnails

No, Telescope doesn't cache previews, because they are supposed to be real-time, so it doesn't make sense to cache them. Telescope also doesn't remember which applications did you started.

So if the reason of that behavior is Telescope then it is probably a bug :(
Intent look at destructors of main classes in the sources doesn't gave me idea why this could happen. It seems that i free all resources accurately. But of course, i could have something forgotten.

By the way, Telescope doesn't deal with applications at all, it deals only with windows. So it would be interesing how it will behave if you will open several windows of same application (XTerminal for example).

I don't have my N810 near me at the moment. But i will test and try to fix this soon.
