Odd. The package is in the extras-testing repository, so you should at least have that enabled, and updated/refreshed. If you have all that set up, you should be able to download it pretty easily...

got extra-settings enabled fcamera it's showing in application manager right under the drivers for fcam. still no joy :(

I'm afraid I can't help much, unless you want to drop to a shell and (as root) run something like:

apt-get install --reinstall fcamera fcam-drivers

Am I the only one that sees this as an actually good thing? I mean, they just added an API that could be tapped by this community to make even better apps surrounding the camera.

It's not a huge announcement, but given some time, I'm sure some cool stuff can be done. There's already one app (in my mind) that could benefit from this - the excellent retro camera app "Classic Cam" could do some even more killer stuff and probably up the processing time.

This is a developers phone, so this is a development that shows that Nokia hasn't fully abandoned it yet.

Just wish it was MeeGo indeed. But they said "exciting" news... not epic.

thanks. I found them where you said with file manager. I had to copy them to my laptop and open them with photoshop though. The RAW image viewer app from extras doesn't seem to be able to handle the photos but they look good in photoshop

Tap and slide down from the main fcamera screen, and you can set the application to save as JPEG in the standard gallery location too!

...ok - nice move Nokia; I hope Titans kernel will be able to handle this app soon - I want to have the extra power he gave us soon to be able to take DNG RAW out of this device.

This thread is responsible for the heightened expectations, not Nokia.

I'm afraid people are falling into the trap of expecting a specific announcement, and then discarding every news, no matter how cool or important that is not that one (in this case, a firmware upgrade or Flash 10). And it's not like we havent seen interesting things even in the last two days in the middle of a known Nokia holiday season. An interesting camera API ? A new, bug free(er) iteration of QtMobility that actually makes it usable ? The preview release of the Qt Web Runtime, a cornerstone tech bridging Symbian and Maemo/MeeGo ? I know it's never enough, but if anyone is setting oneself for unmet expectations, its ourselves - the goods are coming, even if not at the rate we would all like to see.

I am far from an expert o n camerastuff but developers should take a look att this API :-D

maybe this can be used for streaming films to in higher res so all whi9nners out there should atleast take a look at the API cause it looks like it replaces the closed kernel drivers? (not sure all is opened but looks promising atleast :-) Maybe we canb get higher res movies with this new API :-O

Cutt from FCam readme:

"CAM-DRIVERS

Description
-------------

FCam-drivers is a set of replacement kernel modules for the Nokia N900
camera subsystem, meant to be used in conjunction with the FCam
userspace camera API. These are all slightly modified from the
original code that is included in the kernel tree for the Nokia N900.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

Nice.. installing the drivers and fcamera screwed up the app manager for some reason. I have dotted lines everywhere now and the internal camera fails to even open up. I should have just stuck to not trying it but was so tempted.

I had to remove Power kernel, because default camera app failed to start and Fcam showed grey image.

Maybe these new drivers will be the key to 720p video capture.......

Thanks yea no I kinda figured that already. I am back to being stable after purging it. I don't want to remove Titans kernel, i will wait till he updates it if he does that is.

Or perhaps stutter-free 480p, let's take one step at a time!

Installed via Fapman, rebooted and launched. Very, very impressive concept and execution. This is precisely what Maemo and the N900 is about.

Now to delve into the guts of the thing. Thanks Nokia :)

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

will this improve image quality?
will it open the gates to 720p video recording? or at least to smooth SD-video recording?

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

Has any of you whiners actually tried the example application? The level of control is absolutely insane for a phone. You can force ISO100 in low light so the exposure time is 3-4 seconds. No more ISO3200 blurry cam. And this is just a small example. It shoots raw images, do you know of any other phone shooting raw, uncompressed images? I'm still playing around, but this opens up so many possibilities...

I haven't tried it yet. I am a mobile photographer but I am caught up at the moment on the latest N900 android release....I'll have to boot back into Maemo soo. (That even sounds amazing, booting back and forward on a mobile device...wow)

So many great things happening with the N900....I have my Overclocking....N64 Emu.....Android FroYo...and now the most amazing camera application to look forward to!

Really Big Happy Face :D

this is cool, but i'm upset that the exciting news isn't that my n900 can't transform into a spaceship and transmutate lead into gold. i mean, isn't that what flash 10.1 does? or the iphone? seriously people, complain complain complain. complainers deserve nothing.

Can someone post RAW images taken with the fcam? preferably with low light and ISO 100 or so.

I cannot understand the negative reactions of many on here,
If you are that unhappy then buy another make of phone
Fcamera has huge potential

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

One should really check the stanford educations work on camera 2.0:

http://www.graphics.stanford.edu/projects/camera-2.0/

Check the pictures taken by N95.. yes N900 can do the same with fcam.

and now all the whiners will go... "aaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

stickymick 2010-07-21 20:55

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

Well, I don't intend to sound like a whiner, but I'm going to wait a while before I actually try it.
I'll let you lot be the guinea pigs for now. :p

But after going out the other night and taking some pics with the N900, I can honestly say I'm pretty disappointed with the stock camera drivers.

Having said that, I've still got my N95-8GB. If fCam is available for that I'll give it a whirl 'cos it must be a more stable version than the N900 offering at the moment.

I think this is a great release, I was taking a picture earlier and was bemoaning the lack of some features on the n900, this just solved them.

I visit maemo less and less due to the whining and *****ing. I wish people would take it all over to nokia forum and leave this forum for constructive stuff.

Has anyone figured out the panorama feature yet?

Some of those pics are amazing for a cell phone. I too am waiting for a version compatible with Titan's kernel though :o
