Just for information if someone hasn't noticed yet. This doesn't yet work with e.g. Titan kernel. Actually when you check the detail from app manager when installing, it tells you there's a conflict.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

I tried to install the drivers last night. Got no warnings prior to the install, until half way through when the phone flashed up the message that they couldn't be installed

Just out of curiosity, I installed the fCam app, and that did the same.
But the icon was there in "Multimedia". When I attempted to open the app it flicked up briefly then shut down again.

Any ideas guys?

Don't do any overclocking myself, yet. But you did return to stock settings before you uninstalled the kernel, I take it.

But TBH I think this thread needs splitting, because it's hard work sorting the wheat from the chaff.

With what software open dng files from Fcam? I tried with Gimp, but image size is only 640x480, is it real size?

Edit

After instaling http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-99558.html windows picture viewer recognizes format, shows 2592x1968 resolution, but image have to much of green.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

maverick788us - the fcamera application.

for the rest, i had issues with the app initially. it would briefly startup then shutdown again. i installed the fcam drivers first and then the fcamera application itself and that solved the problem for me.

the dng format files are adobe digital negative format. you can manipulate them with apps on the pc. just do a google search. they are big though - in excess of 10mb. they can come in a pair with one file being a jpeg preview. this is as per the dng specifications.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

You can view the DNG files in FCamera itself (just swipe up on the viewfinder to get to the thumbnail viewer) - there's a zoom option there as well.

Or you can change it to save standard JPEG files in the extended settings screen (swipe down on the viewfinder to get there), and they'll be viewable in the normal photo viewer.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

ETalvala.. thanks for the great work on fcam for N900.

Do you know if there can be anything done about Titan's kernel? A lot of us here have that on and we frankly don't want to lose that but still want to experience and build upon fcam.

I know you mentioned that you guys just discovered about titans kernel this morning but is this something that you can update for fcam so there won't be a conflict?

The developers weren't aware of the Titan kernel while developing the software.

I presume you rebooted after installation as the reboot loads the drivers

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

you can't open the dng file directly on the n900. but as someone said earlier in the thread, if you drag the top of the fcamera window down, there is an option in there to save a jpg preview in the regular folder for pictures on the n900. you can then use the photos application to view the jpg.

however, do note that your original DNG file is still there. the jpg is just a "preview" of the DNG file.

Re: Nokia has exciting news for N900 users

I see lots of posters on the forums complaining about lack of applications etc and then when something like this comes along they moan that it's not what they want!
It must make developers want to give up. If you have ideas for an app then make a request and see what comes out of it. Don't just sit back and moan.
I'm not a developer and don't have a clue how to write an app for Fcam but anyone can see the huge potential for this. It is big news and the developers get a huge thanks from me for it.
I would love to see apps to get full control over the camera.
Control shutter speed
Control aperture
Time lapse photography
trigger camera remotely

More importantly, who sets tags on a thread? Because the current set of tags is childish.

It's the same pitfall for 'democracy'. Uniting vision and objectives is part of the challenge. Some may feel they're better informed and know better where to lead the pack; but to get there they must also realize that everyone is on the same boat :)

"Edit tags" doesn't appear anywhere in the source for the page. Some people get fed the option presumably based on their accounts. So what is it? Age of account? Number of 'thanks'?

i have never seen this on any phone camera before.

the out of focus shots you can take make for great subject / portrait images where you want the subject to be in focus while the background is blur. sure you can do it with the default camera app but that is automatic and it doesn't always get it right. having manual control is what makes this app excellent!!

kudos to the team that developed this.

I've seen several like this... on a phone. :P I use Camera360 on my Droid. You're just pointing out that YOU haven't seen this on any phone camera before, but I've seen it--this N900 app isn't quite as good as the ones I've seen and used, but I do agree with the sentiment that this is a GREAT development for the N900. It's a little late to the game.. but still, a major step. It's far SUPERIOR than the other apps I've used/seen in that it's completely OPEN SOURCE, however. THAT counts for a LOT to me. Although I've seen better, it certainly has far greater potential and value to me for being open-source alone.

Good app it may be but what I see is someones homework being sold as nokia software development. Have they ever tried to solve a problem this forum actively wanted?

Must be based on number of posts I guess

This came out of research work to be published at SIGGRAPH. It's a collaboration between Stanford and Nokia Research Centre. They've released an API for advanced development, and an example application which uses this API, and all the source for all of this. Which part of this is "homework"?

Sure. There have been many threads about the poor quality of the N900's built-in camera app. This is a great opportunity for something better.

Now if Nokia would REPLACE their ugly-as-mortal-sin proprietary crap camera app with this as part of the actual OS image, so you don't have to have your precious app installation space occupied by that worthless version, instead blessed with this much better open-source version... Nokia would garnish that TINY bit more respect and be able to claim they opened a tiny bit more of the OS to the community. (Mind you, as I've always kinda suspected.. they would be claiming openness credit on someone's else's efforts despite inconsiderately CLOSED-SOURCE coding their own applications and drivers from the start.)

Anyway, it would help that TINY bit for Nokia. I feel like Stanford gets most of the credit for this, considering how Nokia coded their own crap closed. Props to the Stanford guys! A little grudging props to Nokia--at least they FINALLY did the right thing.
