thanks in advance!

ps: my english is not very well and i am noob with linux

Thats not an issue with transmission as has been stated before. The problem is that when you start a torrent - a large empty file is created. The IO handling causes the N900 to lag.

2.11 is not ready for good use, the text in the buttons is not real readable enough in some places.The last one i put up still works on the PR 1.3
Im about to redo the Gui like i did last time. The new version has more code inside than the last one so i have to find my way through again.
Hope im soon done. ;)

This is just a thought, and I'm no developer, but in looking at the transmission web site http://transmissionbt.com, it seems you can administer transmission from a web browser once the client is running.
So to save time on creating a GUI for the N900, would it be easier to implement it as just a background daemon and then connect and manage it via MicroB ?

I was real close with 2.12 , but my good old dev-pc is history :(

Im about 90% done with a new (old) one, so i hopefully can go on real soon ;)

Edit:
The only thing that stoped me from releasing it, was all the info stuff you see when you choose a singel torrent. Fontsize did not fit well, and when i changed it the way i did before, i got a segmentation fault. :mad:
The rest went fine with all the menus (1,2,3,4,5...)
To be honest, i dont really like the way the menu is with that numbers, was just a quick fix...
Nobody knows what is where :o
Will have a look how to make it more easy ...

I was on their site and they are @ 2.13 lol one update after the other. Good that i have a routine now, where to change what :D

hi!

is there a way to revert the transmission settings to default?

keeps lagging on the hash checking and takes hours before the app be fully responsive.

thanks and happy holidays

@ gabby131, have a look @ /home/user/.config/
Erase the Transmission stuff (folders) and you shoud be good to go.

Im stuck with getting 2.13 to work the way i want it. Need much more to learn how things work :p
The only workout i have so far is the transmission-deamon with webui. I even managed to get a java UI running with icedtea ;)

Normal :

thanks yo!

another reason being is (why i need to revert settings back to default) i always got an error saying "tracker got an error, torrent file did not pass blah....blah...blah..." and then.......transmission stops and becomes unresponsive. did not happened before.

and since i then, i did not have smooth downloads with transmission,

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

Hi there OptX,

I'm wandering if it is normal for the phone to (80%) freeze up/ become near enough unresponsive when downloading a single torrent.

The torrents tracker(s) had loads of seeds 20000+ but yet it struggles to show any sign of downloading although I know it is because when ever I reset the phone so I can use it I go onto mass storage mode to delete the file (because I cannot on the phone because of some error [Could be a read only i think..]) Yeh continuing with what I was saying

When I go to delete the file it shows that the file infact had downloaded 192MB and the file was 550MB. My (Home Network) internet speed dl speed is 50Mbps (5.5MB) a sec on the ps3/laptop. Are there any recomendations of the settings I should change, I have messed with a few but that was to allow more connections to peers for the weaker torrent seeds.

Hope that all makes sence, only just woke up at my desk... Ahh what a long day this'll be...

Transmission is ready to hit the road.
I was trying to make a deb for the repos, but it gives me errors about not having a file that was used a view seconds before :confused:
Will have a look @ this later this week.
Here some random pics of the way better looking build :
http://i.imagehost.org/0854/10_17.png

http://a.imagehost.org/0586/9_14.png
http://a.imagehost.org/0479/4_18.png

And here comes the installer script.
This script also removes the junk from my previous work,and then installs Transmission 2.04.

Steps (most same as last one):

1. Get the Installer from here : Installer

2. Unzip it, and put the files (install.sh & qtrans2.04 folder) in the same folder on your N900 via usb,or use FileBox to do it direct on the N900.
I've used the download folder in MyDocs. You can create even a new folder if you like to.

3. Open Terminal and type root
!!! root can harm your N900, even brick it, if you do something wrong !!!

4. Change to the directory where you put the two files. cd /path/to/files/...
(cd /home/user/Mydocs/download, in my case)

5. Type sh install.sh and wait for the script to be done.

6. Close Terminal

If you dislike something, or find a bug, keep it coming :D

just wanted to let u kno tht the link to installer doesnt work anymore

I dont think its a waste of time at all.
Ive successfully downloaded 2 to 3 files at once of about 350MB in size each.
Yes, it does make the phone less responsive but I only do this over night when not using the phone for anything else.

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

Reading around it seemed a memory card may be the way to get around these IO issues and N900 becoming unresponsive when downloading.

Happy to report this is true!

Bought an 8gb transcend micro sdhc, stuck it in, formatted using file manager, changed setting in transmission (2.04) to download to sd card and voila, now no issues at all and performance is as good as uTorrent on PC!!!

Now to learn how to configure the card properly and get Nitroid installed...

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

Hi Epitaph,

Top kudos Qwerty12, OptX and Epitaph for work done and helpful comments. Torrents was one of the few things I had to do on a laptop until now :D

MicroSD is formatted as FAT32.
It is an 8gb Transcend micro sdhc class 6 bought through Amazon.co.uk.

Formatted it through N900 builtin File Manager.
Guess I have a 4GB file size limit.

I've seen ext2/ext3 file systems mentioned, I guess these would have a higher file size limit but how would performance be compared to FAT32? I would like to be able to run Nitroid and Meego off the SD card also. Any pointers to best way to configure card would be very helpful.

I have been downloading 700MB - 1.3GB legal torrents ;)

I have only downloaded 1 at a time at the moment.
Will test multi downloads over the weekend.

General navigation and web browsing is slightly slowed when downloads are at high download speeds, but no more than your PC is when running uTorrent. Am also able to open Transmission preferences now while downloads are running, couldn't do this without SD card.

I have 20MB Virgin Broadband.
Saw DL speeds of 800 Kb/s or KB/s (whatever the default shown is in Transmission).
Need to tweak Transmission settings now to get up to the 1.5Mb/s or 1.5MB/s DL speeds I can get on laptop with uTorrent.

I will also try QTRapids again now I have the card to see if that also no longer locks everything up.

Only real issue I have with Transmission now is adding files.
Can't get Transmission set as the default handler for torrent files.
I set it up with DBus Switchboard, but when I click a torrent file it says "Launching Transmission" then just stops and doesn't open anything.
And adding files through Transmission is not very user friendly.

Very happy otherwise :D

TMO rocks, one of the most helpful websites I have ever used!!
Keep up the good work all.

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

I ain't touching this with a barge pole. I've just read through all 16 pages of this thread. The original developer (Qwert12) couldn't be bothered with it, then OptX stepped up and tried to further develop it and now that feckless superhero can't be bothered with it.

I've read so many problems with this throughout the thread, including someone who had their whole filesystem changed to Read Only.

Seriously, I think this thread should be locked and people should steer well clear of installing this amateurish garbage on their phone.

Don't no if this post belongs in here but seeing as transmission has a bug or 3 and can lag the system and causes memory corruption i thought id make a suggestion

I've been using qBittorrent which is built using Qt. Ive got it running on my home file server

Would a port of this be possible to the N900 and would it run any better than transmission?

Heh. I thought it might have been but had to check incase there was super duper compression technique used to get all that on. You never know with this phone lol.

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

1 Attachment(s)
I have an issue where once Transmission 1.75 is installed, once I place a shortcut on the desktop, after a reboot it disappears. It cannot be readded, despite still existing on the device, in the main menu, and being selectable/useable (via the main menu).

Attached is a screen dump showing where it was (below Conky). I have been resorting to uninstall/reinstall to get it back, but it only lasts until a reboot.

Is there a work around from anyone who has this issue?

JamesBond@ge 2011-03-23 12:04

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

I dont even get the option to create a shortcut in 1.75. It dont show up in the add a shortcut list.

It is a bit of a pain as I like ALL my most used things on the front screen. But with Transmission 1.75 I have to open the apps menu. It's only 1 or 2 more clicks and it's not gonna kill me. But I still like the shortcuts to everything on my desktop :(

i have my n900 overclocked and have it set to download to microsd and it works fine, even multitasking. just download 1 at a time!

Im using transmission 1.75, get it from maemo packages! make sure you grab transmission common 1.75 too.

Re: Transmission v2.03 for Nokia N900

@5spdvl

You have to clean up the conflicts between qtrans.desktop (2.x version) and transmission.desktop (1.75 version).
Change duplicate/conflicting entries.

Save the following file as
/usr/share/applications/hildon/transmission.desktop
thereby overwriting the existing symlink.

Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.76
Name=Transmission 1.76
Exec=transmission %F
Icon=transmission
Terminal=false
TryExec=transmission
Type=Application
MimeType=application/x-bittorrent;
Categories=Network;FileTransfer;P2P;GTK;
X-Osso-Service=com.transmissionbt.Transmission
X-Osso-Type=application/x-executable

this will make it show up in desktop shortcuts and in the app menu as Transmission 1.76

for those who also have 2.x installed
save the following as
/usr/share/applications/hildon/qtrans.desktop
Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Transmission 2.03
GenericName=Torrent Client
Comment=Torrent Client
Exec=qtr
Icon=trans
Categories=Network;

this will resolve all conflicts and make it show up as Transmission 2.03 in shortcut list and app menu
