Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
Hmm... With ApMeFo you could have hit the hildon bug.
What I can say is that battery-eye, personal IP address, personal dataplan and a few others I have all up and running and I have excellent battery life. I don't play much, but this is about standby time. And my N900 stands by > 24 hours on wifi + jumps maybe 30 times a day with ~25% battery. I get a drain of about 9% overnight, but that's because maintenance is performed overnight - apt tasks, calendar cleanup and whatever heck I have no clue of yet. Like I said, over the day a 20 min charge nets me ~35% charge if charging from red, wall wart, and that holds me over the day. I also reboot daily to fix the python widget issue. OC@900 and swappiness set to 10. |

Never tried sysklogd. Will install that tonight and see how it goes. Curiosity might get the better of me and I'm gonna give it another test before reflashing. It may just show what tick_nohz_restart_sched_tick is doing.. Nothing is consuming cpu cycles but the device is waking up all the time. No SD card in the phone here. I thought it may be a voltage issue with titan's kernel since I'm undervolting, but resetting it to default didn't make much of a difference. A new version of the kernel is out too, will be interesting to see how that goes! |

In my job there is quite a bit of sitting around awaiting my 'go' so therefore i do quite a bit of browsing the net...I always have to charge my N900 every day and i carry a spare battery too just in case i can't see the day out. On Monday evening I charged my phone (didn't reboot) to full at around 9pm, listened to an hour podcast in bed that evening, work next day with usual amount of browsing, music on train, several phone calls, podcast again at night. Today is Wednesday 9am and i still have 15% battery left. I make that 36 hours without a charge and counting. The only thing i did differently was use opera browser instead of firefox! I didn't install or uninstall any apps in that period. I prefer firefox and opera to microb because of the tabs and add ons and will still use firefox but i think that it is fairly conclusive that for me at least firefox causes a drain. BTW..I always close the browser down when not in use... Dan |
Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
I am doing a little trick with help of Alarmed every night between 01.00-07.30. I tell it to switch to a oc-profile of 125-250 mhz with minimum volt and flight mode. I do not want anyone to call me those hours anyway.
This night it only took 50 mAh! ;) Me too like Firefox and i have noticed that it sometimes take much cpu. I did not have that before. I think it might be an extention causing it. |

Based on my personal observations, they use so little power that I cannot give you any numbers about how much battery % they use. That's what I meant with "not measureable". I've noticed no difference, running them or not. To put it in a Star Wars quote: "These aren't the battery-consuming apps you're looking for." I must admit that I haven't tried really hard to measure the idle consumption of those apps, since I'm actually using my N900 as my primary phone. On my normal use (some quite short calls i.e. not hours, sms, e-mail, listening music/podcasts, occasional web browsing, 3g data or wifi always on, OC'd to 250-900 with mix of ideal and starving voltage profiles) I get over 24 hours on full charge. If I put the phone to offline mode over night, I get about 5% drain over 8 hours. I never remember my N900 having power itself off because it has run out of battery. I wonder if it actually ever does that. I spend most of the time in areas with good cell coverage. However, I've noticed (and from what I read around here, I'm not alone) that staying in flaky coverage areas can eat up the battery really fast. |

Alarmed, Titan's kernel, maybe rootsh, and all the wiki pages you can keep down.

Got it, just working on the command line for enabling the 125-250mhz setting on the kernel. Edit: Got it setup in Alarmed and in the Desktop Command Widgets. Pretty nice, lets see if it helps my battery. ;) 2d |

Is it working fine in Desktop Command Widgets? I had to abandon it, it kept going bonkers. What command?

Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
Here is what I did when there was something causing unusually high battery usage.
1. Having had BatteryGraph installed, I was able to go back and compare the daily graphs to find the approximate beginning of the issue. 2. Then I went into FapMan, and had it list all installed/updated items by date. 3. Systematically removed two or three items every day, checking the results in between. 4. Repeated that until the battery drain was back to the previous averages. 5. Having it narrowed down to two items, I was able to find the culprit (in my case MaeNotify). |

I don't like leaving it overclocked as it's just not necessary. To be honest I'm not even really seeing any real speed ups when overclocked, I just like this kernel because it allows me to underclock way lower than the stock one. 2d |

I managed to reproduce my power drain problem with the device stuck in C0. I noticed this only happens after booting from a shutdown and will stay until I do another (or a number of) shutdowns. Interestingly the nokia boot up animation is cut short when this happens. Attached is the syslog and also my powertop reading (monitored for 10min) I went through the log and can't find anything useful so I'm wondering if you can take a look? I shutdown the n900 and powered back on. syslogd starts logging on line 678 - 20:17:37 Nokia-N900 syslogd 1.5.0#5maemo7+0m5: restart. After the system booted I then went into xterm and ran powertop for 10min. After that I left the device idle till line 1689: Aug 5 20:57:37 Nokia-N900 -- MARK -- I started leafpad to have a look at my powertop output and then started wifi to copy the output of syslog and powertop onto my pc. The only thing I noticed is that I have some bad eraseblock errors on line 841-853, which is worrying. What can i do about that??? thanks!! EDIT: I did a line by line comparison of a 'good' boot vs a 'bad' boot syslog. What i've found is that the dsp crashed on boot and had to recover. line 1227: Code:
Nokia-N900 dsp-manager: DSP crash detected: 0 |

It seems my battery problems have dissippated though as I only have 3 hours left of work (been here since 0800), and I'm still at 68% and have been using the phone a lot. I think the real issue was MaeNotify. I also think installing the power kernel helped me out a lot (as I under clock a lot although the verdict is still out on whether or not this helped. This is becuase a process might run for 10 seconds at 600mhz but take 60 seconds at 250mhz. So I'm still trying to see if proportionally I'm getting a gain out of underclocking). 2d |
Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
It depends on your usage profile. Me, e.g., I do little work time-wise, maybe an hour sum total, but I really lean on it. Upgrades, graphics apps, VNC, stuff like that. Overall, I get a "feel like" 30-40% improvement since OC to 900 MHz. I handled a stock-clocked today and it feels sluggish, I kept waiting on the device to finish. It might be that it spends more time waiting for me than the other way around.

OneNAND are specified for minimum amount of usable sectors. For example atleast 256 megs as in n900. There's almost always a list of bad blocks already when they leave the factory. It's nothing to worry about, the OS doesn't use the bad blocks.

We didn't figure out a way to fix it without a complete reflash of both eMMC and FIASCO. So you should try that. He later installed Titans kernel without any problems.. he now have aprox 60mAh in drainage over night. |

Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
Hi, I hope somebody can help me here, as I am worse than most cases I have read. My battery basically drains at a rate of 1 percent every 1-2 minutes. So yes it drains from 100 percent to 0 percent in max of 5 hours :(
I am usually on GPRS, and I have skype, facebook, and gmail chats running. I also have a few widgets, nothing special. Any hints or help are much apreciated!! My Catalogs: Nokia, Ovi, maemo.org, Extras, Extras-Devel, Extras-Testing, NITDroid. I have bought 5 batteries and tried them all, and I also tried an extended battery that came with a special back door, and that one helped a little bit, but the backdoor was HUGE so I decided its not worth it. I have battery graph and Conky, and nothing strange happens in Conky. Re: Methods for determining battery drainage / cause
I know the secret of power drainage:
1. Overclock will help solve it (i said this because when i go back to stock, the CPU% are 1 or 2% or 3% up in idle mode but when i overclocked...CPU is always under 1% in idle mode. 2. There is a file called hildon-desktop-2.2.141_2.2.140-1+0m5_armel.deb that you need to download to kill hildon-desktop. |
