Re: What is the future for the n900 from now? meego or no updates or nothing?
I have to agree with crown77 on this. . .
I enjoy my N900 and have fun using it everyday however with the looming fact that Nokia has made it very clear they won't support on the Meego platform is well crap. Where does the company responsibility (Nokia) end on a product regardless of what it is? For most companies it's never unless they give an upgrade path or alternative for older hardware/software. Crown77's example was a wonderful one and is very true ( I also work in IT ). If we get a new hard drive or computer componet and it fails we RMA it right? Well if that product is no longer available what do they do with that RMA. . . exactly they upgrade it to what is comparable. If Nokia is going to drop a product like the N900 then they should at the very least allow us to "trade in" + a little extra cash depending on condition for the comparable Meego device. No where on their site or phone service does it state "this is a development device". Again, not regretting my purchase of the N900 but it does leave a fowl taste of hearing from Nokia that your pretty much on your own. |
Re: What is the future for the n900 from now? meego or no updates or nothing?
Oh well we all know this from the beginning that Nokia N900 will only be a toy-boy. Nokia gave birth to N900 then left it in the hospital in the care of the community nurses. Then after 9 long months N900 became a little mature but still got a bit of mental illness that it keeps lagging out after staying up for a few days. Nokia then readopted N900 as one of their children then after find out the faults with N900 and Nokia failed him from MeeGo University; Nokia took him for a ride to a quiet church area and then abandoned it again and hoping that the kind and caring priests inside the chapel Maemo.org community will look after him and teach him to be a better device one day.
At the end N900 meet the Optimis PRIME and become an AutoBOT robot. Transformer theme song!! FIN! |
Re: What is the future for the n900 from now? meego or no updates or nothing?
WTF is a development device. Sorry but thats not how it is advertised. I would really love to see a poster/advert anywhere where it says this is a development/experminental device. You can't really sell that in a retail store where a consumer with absolutely no idea walks in unless stated.
I am pretty capable of owning a device and know exactly what I am getting into before buying it but that won't hold true for every harry out there. Having said that.. I love my N900 and it's not going anywhere.. my jeans pocket is where home is! |

I do understand that people get nervous when their device doesn't work as they want but on the other hand they should realize that they are not holding ordinary just "phone" device but computer. I have seen too many "letīs experiment" users here who after while (sjhould) realize that what they are doing with n900 is beyond their own skills (overclocking, testing&devel) and end up yelling here that this device is broken. I would say that 80-90% of problems could be fixed with complete flash and user selfban to devel and extras and also little common sense on what they try to do with this device. But still there is bugs and there will be but please remember that those bugs do not always touch all users. And some "off course should be fixed" bugs actually can be bugs that some people regard as features and some people do not even care. btw. have you installed PR 1.2? |
Re: What is the future for the n900 from now? meego or no updates or nothing?
some of you guys saying you want a stamp like thing from nokia representing support from it for n900 makes me go back and question the purpose of SDKs. There shud be none right, cuz the company releasing the hardware should own everything and guarantee the support of every uniqu capability that device should have! Damn.
SDKs exist to make things possible that no company can achieve alone. This n900 has a community support and far superior technologies to develope software for. Everyone shud be thanking they got such an open and totally extensible piece of software and hardware. Gosh we are never happy. I imagine using n900 for a long time even when i have another cool hardware to use as a phone. I dont know how many companies can do a thing like n900. Kudos to Nokia. |
Re: What is the future for the n900 from now? meego or no updates or nothing?
@slender of course i have installed PR1.2 i waited for this mainly about the described bug. I can live with a lot of Bugs but i used the n900 as my mobile Phone at this time and simply lost Calls. I have another Phone now becouse i need a working one just to get my calls..

As for lack of lack of official MeeGo support, I think most people are not aware what exactly has been announced there, or in general what MeeGo means, though that can be IMHO mostly attributed to the confusing nomenclature. |

Sure we will probably see a hack version of Meego or who knows what else but again it then falls to the community and those willing to keep with the device. This isn't just about the N900 but a lot of devices. Unless the company is willing to place some effort buyers will decline for a product with short shelf life ( Yes I know everything these days have a short life ), just the SDK doesn't cut it to me. Horrible example to bring up but only one I can think of atm. iPhone 3GS old phone yet still able to upgrade to the latest and greatest iOS. Yes they started cutting official support to their much older devices but in the example of the N900 it's not that old. To me if Nokia simply said "We will offer an upgrade from Maemo5 on the N900 to Meego" I bet almost everyone would drop these threads. |

I am completely ignoring the trolling comments as anyone with half a brain will relaise there is much interest in knowing just what will happen as far as Nokia and the empty promises they made to us all. Nitdroid is not the answer as it is an emulation and not a true OS in it's own right but also Steve has done an excellent job bless him and needs a lot of praise for his and his now team efforts. Quit the stupid trolling accusations please they are just not needed and really ARE out of place on this thread.... thankyou. OK so now we are left with the the question and does need some answers preferably from NOKIA .... WHAT IS THE FUTURE IF ANY FOR THE N900. |
