Thanks for all the positive responses! Here are some replies:

This is actually an OS feature, and out of my application's control. You can try it with other portrait mode applications, for example in WifiEye the same happens when it is in portrait mode.

Combine Flip UI landscape with normal portrait mode.
I really like the setup where all track controls + reordering is showing. With the two current modes you get either portrait or landscape where all controls are showing.

This is something I was actually contemplating, but didn't bother to implement. Thanks, it's a really good idea though and I'll surely add it in the next version.

Flac and ogg should be supported, and the backend is already configured for gapless playback. Please try it and let me know if it works or not. :)

the UI is very good, and all it need is some adjustments (in a form of scaled and sized buttons etc... nevertheless, there is a few bugs in UI, but you will fix it, it is obvious ;)
but i wanted to suggest one thing for you: COULD you make the the UI to be skinnable??? for example: make a folder that will store a pics for UI, and let users put there own (for buttons, sliders, etc...) ??? (just a thought)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

oh yes... the icon for the app is pretty crappy! xD (sorry, but it is :D )
change it! it would be better if it is a symbol for play, rather the symbol for recording (witch is not a main function of your app) ;)
best regards ;)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

One suggestion for the buttons: Don't use circle buttons, but make the shape of the buttons represent their function (i.e. a triangle for the play button, etc..) - this way, the buttons are easier to recognize, right now, people see "a bunch of circles" and then have to look at each one of them to parse their image.

Maybe you just want to remove the "button" background for each shape altogether and make the shapes just bigger, much like the built-in media player.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

Thanks for this great player.

It plays everything I need, except one thing. My favourite web radio. I like to listen to di.fm which uses playlists as stream, like http://listen.di.fm/public2/classiceurodance.pls
Please add support for playlists in url.

Also in options when the TomAmp is started, enabled columns checkboxes are empty, so you must select them before closing options. If you leave it as is all columns disappear. On subsequent entries to options the proper checkboxes are selected.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

Thanks so much for this app...this is the first player for n900 that works exactly how I want!

Bug: Long-press menu doesn't work for last item in playlist.

Suggestion: better layout in Add File selection box...current horizontal scrolling list is really clunky. Also, multi-select in Add File and Add Folder screens would be sweet.

Thanks again!

to improve design, and i don't mean change UI but just make the elements better looking i would suggest you to ask the guy who made new design for grr (there is thread somewhere), i think he is pretty good at that.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

Wish list:
Stop playing whenpulling the headphone jack (and headphone daemon is installed). The app stops the built in music player, so not sure whether you can "catch" that signal, or the person who created the daemon has to change something at his end...

TMarki 2010-08-28 14:42

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

@andyph666: you can add the topmost folder where you store your music with Add Folder, then TomAmp will ask if you want to add all subfolders. If you answer yes, then all the playable sound files to the playlist.

@yukop4: sadly nothing, I barely had time to fix a few bugs in the fremantle version lately.... Hopefully I will have more time next month. Maybe someone with diablo dev chops could help...

very small issue with current version
current song is bolded - but when moving the song up or down in the list, the song that takes the place of the current playing song gets bolded.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

GREAT STUFF TMarki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is a player that have everything (ok, eq is not there, but it is clear that it is not going to be easy job...)
nevertheless, this is only thing i can suggest to you:
BUTTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hear hear: leave just these buttons (and make them larger, so they can be "finger friendly" : play/pause, stop, repeat and shuffle (this two can be moved after the following two), and previous/skip, next/skip....
AND: the buttons for the aditionall formating and control of the playlist, can be hidden, and be activated with a some aditional key, and be placed OVER the control buttons.
AND BETTER YET: you could arrange buttons like they are arranged in most of PC players now, by folloving order: previous/skip, play/pause, stop, next/skip
and repeat, shuffle, move track up/down, delete, add, quee COULD BE HIDDEN (because, they are not used that much...)

this is one thing that it misses so it could be a best music player for the MAEMO! everything else is done excellent!!!!!!!!
great job man! ;)

p.s. oh yes.... i have no internet connection these days, so i could not test a new version, but, is the volume bar completely hidden/shown over the seek bar, or it is a half/half shown (like in current version that i have...)
i'd like (it is more finger friendly) if it show/hides all over a seek bar, when pressed a volume button....

best regards!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

It is shown on the opposite side of the seek bar, like in this screenshot:

It auto-hides in a few seconds.

Also, thank you for the great comments, I'll try to do something like what you suggest for the next (minor) release.

TMarki, in landscape mode I cannot see the volume control button ( on the lower right side) It is hidden under the progress bar, i guess. I can see /use the button in potrait mode.

Also the volume control bar hides when using it, should it be like this , or hide it after not used for sometime?

Thanks, I suspect this is an issue with the theme you have.

Watch out for the next release, I'll add different button sizes, as well as the button grouping/hiding that will surely solve your problem.

It hides after a few seconds, regardless of use.

You'll need to give a little bit more info than that...

What are you trying to play?
What file format?
Does it freeze in the same song, maybe on the same position?
What version of Maemo 5 do you have installed?
Do other applications/players freeze too?
Any other factors you think might be releavant (overclocking, software, etc)?

Thanks

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

Nice how TomAmp continues to play without stuttering when the screen goes into powersave mode (other players like EasyPlayer and Symfonie have problems here).

A problem is when you have many files lacking embedded metadata.
The Artist and Album columns become empty, and in the Title column every line looks like "/home/user/MyDocs/.sounds/Foo/blahaha.ogg", which is too long to fit.
Perhaps better if the common prefix /home/user/MyDocs/.sounds was skipped from all of these, and Foo was presented in the Artist column.
(should there be another directory level below Foo, it could be presented as Album)

Firstly thanks for replying I'm not an techie just an end user very keen to have a decent mediaplayer for my N900 and TomAmp looked good. I'm quite a novice (sorry!) so please bear with me.

I cant get it to import my music (about 2500 songs) it just becomes unresponsive and I only have the option to close the application. I have Maemo 5 version 10.2010.19-1.203.1. I had mediabox & Instinctiv installed - they didnt freeze but no more user friendly than the pre-installed mediaplayer (it doesnt freeze either). I've uninstalled both players also. File format is mp3. Could it be as simple as I'm trying to get it to import too many songs at a time? It will import small folders.

Thanks again

Definitely. Tomamp is not a media-library-type application (though in the future it might get such a feature).

It is meant for small to medium size playlists (I successfully use it with 3-400 songs), but since each song adds up a little to the memory usage, and the n900 doesn't have a lot of memory to begin with, it can become a problem with large playlists.

<technical>What you are experiencing is swapping - the available RAM gets all used up, and the system tries to use the lot slower storage space for program memory. This is what appers to be freezing, when in fact the system is busy swapping things between RAM and virtual memory. You might see this with other memory hungry applications, or if you run multiple demanding apps at the same time.</technical>

I'm planning to do memory optimisations in the future to reduce the memory consumption by the playlist items, but until then I'd advise you to use smaller playlists, only add the songs/folders you want to listen to at the moment. Maybe create a few smaller playlists from your collection, and save them (Save playlist), that would enable easy switching between portions of your collection.

Thanks for your comment!

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

I'd like to announce version 0.4, which features the suggested button set toggle for the toolbar (show one set of buttons at a time). Button size is also selectable now.

I also managed to implement a popular request, an equalizer.

See the first post for screenshots.

The package is in testing-devel, I'll try to promote it in the next few days if no serious bugs show up.

I'm looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

Hi Tmarki - just installed the latest version. My findings:

1. Eq doesn' seem to work. changing bars makes no change to sound, and changes are not saved when exiting (and reentering) eq.
2. headphone toggle seem to toggle no matter initial state, so if headphones are inserted while playing music via speakers, music is paused.
3. When entering options, it switches to portrait mode.

Wishes:
1. Would be nice if the headphone toggle could trigger on Bluetooth headset being disabled.
2. Is it possible to get Bluetooth controls (prev, next, play, pause)?
3. show/hide track bar when pressing track time (same idea as the volume button toggle)

This is strange, and indictes that it doesn't find the eq phonon effect object for some reason.
Can you tell me what version of Fremantle do you have, maybe the Qt and libphonon versions too?
I only tested on my phone, where it did work (and save) fine.

Both of these are intentional (and not ideal, I admit), I'll try to fix them in a future version.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] TomAmp Music Player available

The eq is working for me. Everything on newest version and things from devel. :) Living on the bleeding edge.

Don't know if it's possible, but could you make the scrollers snappy. Like when close to some values it automatically puts it there. For example the 0 gain, when you want to reset one of them.
Also it would be nice if you could put the frequencies above/bellow corresponding scroller, and a button to reset the whole eq.

One other thing not related to eq.
It would be good if, like the built-in player, the hardware volume keys would work while the player is working and the phone is locked.
I use it when changing transportation. Going with bicycle and when walking I like to listen it on a little higher volume, because don't need to hear my surroundings that much.

Not sure if I can make them snappy but reset functionality is definitely missing, and will be added.

Since I'm just using a system provided EQ 'effect object', and it doesn't tell which band is for which frequency range, I'm afraid this is not possible.

Attention Diablo users!

I successfully built the package with the autobuilder, now I need someone brave enough to download and test it.

I don't expect it to work, but who knows. Here's a direct link: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d...emo1_armel.deb

hi downloaded it but will only play one song -even though i have a folder with 30 songs on it-all mp3

equalizer does nothing
sound plays to low-
interface in black and white only
buttons work including sizing which is good
pop up for options will not close on screen tap

otherwise good start so far -keep it up
definitely has potential

Thanks for the new version everything works fine for me even the equalizer, but one thing i have noticed is that when skipping through a track the audio glitches for a split second before jumping the the point i selected.

Suggestion its already been said please try and add cue file support as i listen to alot of mixed cds that are ripped as cue and 1 big mp3 file, so i can open cue then it lists songs inside the cue file and also gives it gapless playback

Is there any way to make it receive pause/next song signal from the Headset Control program?
I use the default headset with the nice lil' button, so i'd like to have possibility to use it.

TMarki thanks for this wonderful app!

I have these few issues when running it though, for some reason, it suddenly eats up around 50% of CPU resources... A couple of days ago, its only around 13%..

Also, when playing in the background, i run another app like the web browser and the sound suddenly stops. system sounds work though. i have to change tracks and back to be able to hear the music again..

that is all for now, otherwise its fantastic as it is now!

Hmm, did this happen right after upgrading, or is it unrelated?
Is the playlist size the same? Did you change the eq settings?

This is possibly a side-effect of the equalizer. The next version will have an on/off setting for it, so we'll be able to test this theory.
Until then, if it annoys you, try switching back to 0.3: .deb file
