N900 batery life 13 hrs

Good news, 13 hours battery life #n900 #maemo #nokia . How. loaded Easy Debian to get Open office and that all I did.
Was lucky to get 5 hrs befor that.

Would love to know why?:D:D:D:D

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

Would you first try to list apps what you have installed, describe how you use it (3g,gps,browsing,wifi etc.) and make estimation how long you browse, listen music etc. Search forum about battery drainage and how to avoid it and how to monitor your system.

In xterm you can run:
maemo-list-user-packages
And it shows installed apps

If you run:
maemo-list-user-packages > packages.txt
You will get packages.txt filename that contains all listed packages

hint:
You can evoke maemo-.... command by just typing maemo- and then hitting tabulator and you will have list, then write couple of letters more, for example li and tabulator again and it auto completes command.

Hi
Thanks for your quick response.

I am not sure what point you are making, but I have attached screen print of installed apps.I use the phone frequently using 3G,and Wifi I hardly ever play music but do run short Youtube presentations, have SatNav but only use it connected to car power.

The point I was making is that having done nothing different before or after loading Easy Debrian my battery life has at least doubled. I do understand that some apps are battery greedy.
What I do not understand is why the battery life has improved.

Any Views?

Regards

My best guess is your hildon-desktop crashed and all your widgets went bye bye with it and you didn't notice.

13h is pretty bad still. You should be able to improve that. I get about 48h juice with normal modest use. Always 3g or wifi on. No streaming video though. The single most important thing is to overclock and undervolt. Also don't let widgets update too often.

I have configured mine to go into flight mode and use 250mhz max during night. During that time it takes ~50mAh.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

Battery life is only dependent on the individual's usage.

There are so many threads already existing with this discussion, you can see a summarized version of the same in many places like this.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

I am not sure if you have to overclock för 250mhz. I have not checked it up. You need a program that uses terminal to execute though. Maybe CpuFreqUI will allow you to do this without overclocking. But i am fairly certain that you need the custom kernel for this.

I have configured Alarmed (install with app manager) to switch this for me. The flight mode is a preconfigured setting in alarmed.. so you would only need to select it.. and then choose daily.. and what time it should go into flight mode.

Not entirely true. I don't do most of that stuff.. and still get 48h of usage. But sure if you play n64 games and watch a lot of youtube videos then the battery will not last long.

I still charge my phone when i get home from work though.. it is normally at 60-70% left by then.

Also.. if you don't need the browser. Close it.. cause it will take battery in idle.

thank you very much i try alarmed first.

Actually.. you have syslog if you want it. Just go into terminal and:

1. sudo gainroot
2. apt-get install sysklogd

I use it my self. Another program that could be helpful is PowerTop.. though it can be hard to understand. You have threads about it here on maemo.org.. so search and you will find ;)

If you have leafpad (my preferred editor) installed you only need to.

1. leafpad /var/log/syslog

You will need to restart too. Syslog will be bad for your battery.. but i value it enough to have it installed anyway. There isn't any other good log for n900.. sometimes "dmesg" is enough but it doesn't show everything and clears after every restart.

Interesting, I disconnected auto and it used more battery, CPU was working overtime, do have Facebook apps running.

Sounds to dodgy whilst phone under warranty. Whats the risk?

using cpufreq you can change the freq down to 250mhz without overclocking but I never really noticed a difference... Im sure it all comes down to peoples location to the centre of the cell they are in, bad reception leads to a big power loss.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

O.O, my battery lasts a full day with constant use in fact got up, started using the device at 6:35am and came off at 8:40pm just now to charge it. I'll list a few points as to how my battery lasted so long, cause I purposely monitored myself.

1) My device is always on 2.5G

2) Wifi set to always ask first.

3) Downloaded about 6-10 apps each ranging from 54kb-8mbs

4) Browsed the net a little about 10mins

5) Did a lot of gaming using prboom, vgba, picodrive and snes.

6) The only daemon I have installed is extended locker by qwerty12.

7) Made about 2 sms texts.

8) Brightness always set to one.

9) Listened 2 mp3's alot.

10) Spent a long time in xterm tryna do some hacking.

Using the default mp3 player widget whilst having my screen locked (using the side switch), and using headphones seemingly makes my battery last forever. Seriously @_@, my battery was very low (red zone) just now, I did the above and it lasted a little more than an hr before I got tired of it and put it to charge.

Of course then I was using qwerty 12's extended locker to save battery life and avoid reviving the screen.

Edit: Also I keep no more than 2 applications open at one time.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

Last week I flown from Lisbon to London then to Sydney.

My battery lasted the whole journey listening to music, playing Angry Birds and watching a few TV episodes.
I had to because all the movies and TV shows on the British Airways in flight entertainment system were the same as 3 weeks before and I already watched what I wanted the first time around :D

Of course it was in Offline mode during the flights, but this included 8h between flights in London and the phone was fully online during that time with a few calls, sms and internet browsing.

So, it was a +30h journey and the battery was still at 10% or something when I walked in my house in Sydney.

My point is, some of you probably have stuff running all the time in the background that is wasting a lot of power.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

I have the brightness set to 3/5, I listen to music and play excessive amounts of solitaire and angry birds. I make calls, and text. I get roughly 1.5 days worth before it dies.

Angry Birds/Solitaire = 3~5 hours a day.
~45min to 1 hour of calls a day
~15 texts a day
Web Browsing over 3.5g and or 2.5g (mostly 3.5g) ~1 hour a day

I get 24 hrs with humanly usage and around 14 hrs on days i go crazy.

Here is what i did... How to get most out of your N900 battery?.
I used help of Battery Graph for this analysis and looks like working.

Re: N900 batery life 13 hrs

No!No!No!Yes!'s N900 Hard Sleep Mode helps a lot. The battery could last for more than a day if you're not going to watch movie or browse web.

I tweaked the original script to include some notifications and underclocking as well. I could show you if you like.

Well.. the risk is that you lose your warranty. I not seen anyone loose it though. And overclocking have been possible for a couple of months now.

The webbrower.. the one you use to watch homepages from the internet. Don't leave it on when you don't need it.

The problem with cpufreq and stock kernel is that you can't do under voltage. So in that case maybe the best would be to use titans kernel afterall. The gain of battery charge is pretty big.
