Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Finally set some time aside to make the switch, and indeed the improvement over the original is incredible. Congratulations !
Main things still missing (for me) is a full "new posts" list and a global "show only updated" preference for all feeds. But this Grr is already way more usable, thanks for that ! |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
UPDATE : Trojita :
- speed up the ui - bold blue text for new entries - changed "Number of messages : X" to "X messages" http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/6...hottrojita.jpg EDIT : same thing coming to Grr soon |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Man, you are just awesome. By the way, do you have any links / reference / etc for the UI elements you use?

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
UPDATE : Grrr
- using now same style that Trojita (rounded bubbles for unread, and gradients, same colors) - added banner for when marking all as read - trying to gain some room for feed entries label (reducing margins, removing bold weight, and changing text size from 22 to 18) - more consistent look : non starred entries have an empty star icon (there was no icon at all before, causing a bad-looking indent) - yet more consistent look : date and author are not deplacing the label to the bottom, so when one information is not fulled, the genral look stays correct main window : list of feeds : http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/2...eenshotgrr.jpg one feed entries list : http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/5...enshotgrr2.jpg PS : file is on my ftp like always EDIT : - i'll add the 'New entries' fake-feed as soon i'll have found how to do that - i'm thinking about adding a header on the content visualisation page, to show the complete label when its too long to be displayed on the list - i'll add the configuration page for rotation behavior soon (the same that in trojita) - i'll make the 'add feed' button and the 'feed info' one as soon as i could access some google reader api documentation - and finally i'm thinking about an efficient model for offline access and some nice feature like 'read that later' or favicons for feeds.... so stay tuned ..... |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
I am digging your grr, Thanks!
I have to say the only things I would like to see added would be the 'new' feed as other posters mentioned if you figure out how to do it.... and another item that would be cool if possible would be a 'share with note' option. No clue if it's doable or not...either way awesome job. I must be overlooking something with trojita...i am trying to set up a gmail acct in it...have the settings configured to google's imap/smtp but I gt a login failure...double and triple checked my typing...can't find what I'm overlooking. keep up the good work! |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
New version of Grr looks AWESOME!!! Fantastic work.
Is there any chance you work together with original author of the app? Or may be you could add your changed apps in repos? |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Very nice indeed!!
I can't view it in portrait mode like in the picture you have, any suggestion? Thanks! Quote:

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
When I want to install trojita I have an error: "Impossible to install trojita. Applications packetage are incompatible" (I've translated it, I'm french)
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
You have to install it via terminal.
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
oh.. i don't have the skills to do that. There is a tutorial for that?
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Please add grrqt to testing-repo if it's possible.
Thank you. |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
A suggestion: Could you change the font color? Blue font with dark background does not offer enough contrast. Yellow would be OK. Thanks.

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Great job! Your Grr fork looks absolutely superb!
Some things I'd like to see implemented: * publication on the extras-devel repository (but I guess this in on the way) * being able to pick colors (eg. red for updated thread) * being able to lock it into portrait/landscape orientation * being able to hide the menu (button or shortcut) * being able to sort the feeds according to the groups specified in my Google account (eg. news, IT, maemo, whatever). * how do we donate? * About says Grr version 0.0.4 (same as the original version of Grr, this can't be!) Again, thanks a lot for taking the time! [edit: typos] |

Has anyone been able to get trojita working? Edit: I restarted the app and it's working now! |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
it's working fine for me (but trojita can't send mail atm, just receive)
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Yeah I was messing around with smtp right now and figured that it wasn't enabled yet. Thanks for the good work!
Looking at the original trojita project, smtp doesn't have SSL implemented yet: http://projects.flaska.net/issues/show/8 Is that the main issue you're facing for sending mail? |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
small question : how does Trojita handle deletion of gmail mails ? Simply removing the inbox label so the mail is still visible in the All Mail folder (modest behaviour) ?
Or moving the mail to the trash folder (and so really deleting it) ? I want the 2nd solution. Any chance for that ? Thanks anyway for this very nice version ! |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
some requests, maybe I should address them to the original Trojita QT developer, let me know if I should...
- can you put a multiple mail delete functionality in place ? - possibility for a continuous reading mode, without going back to the main email list ? Like read an email, press delete, see next email. and also some buttons like forward/backward - possibility to change the size and the default (plain text) reading font ? I prefer Arial for reading anytime but but for certain content eg. tables, it might be needed to switch temp. to a fixed width font. Maybe use the modest idea for the font/mail rendering size (volume up/down) Just some ideas, I really like how this is progressing. I'm just a bit confused what's the latest source now. I first installed from the extras-devel repo, then I installed from a http download from your site. Then I got an update from the repo as well. Now I'm lost what I have ... The one with an icon says in the about box : v0.1-407-g99ae9a3-dirty ... Is this the last version ? And I also still have one without an icon in the app list but that doesn't start anymore. How do you plan to integrate your changes into Jan's original work ? If not, you'll be continuously chasing his versions and applying your patches ... Cheers |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
I have never been able to connect to my Gmail account using Trojita. Whatever I do, all I get is "Network error: the underlying socket is having problems : Host not found" (twice)

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
****************************** UPDATE ******************************
I'm glad to announce the brand-new version of Grr NG !!! This is a uncomplete list of the new features : - Revamped UX to stick more to MeeGo and a little of my own.... ;-) (some people have said they love my custom maemo theme in viewing my previous screenshots, so i did an attemp to provide my theme inside the application UX CSS style, because Qt allows it) - Settings dialog to set orientation settings and filter on updated feeds - added an header over the list of entries with details of feed (because i made a cleanup on titlebar) - added a larger strip over the content view with many details on the viewed news : publishing date, title (with working word wrapping if text is too long), author name, website, category.... - switching between view is just instantaneous - i have integrated the maemo information banners between the UX element to avoir them to pass over and block the clicking, and gived them a nicer looking - accelerated all slide gestures in lists and viewports - corrected a bug that made some entries not being marked as read or as favorite when using 'Previous' / ' Next' button - beautified Connection dialog (now in 'Account Settings') - removed old maemo menus in titlebar, and just added a nice 'About' dialog instead. - many other improvements..... you can find it as usual in my FTP : http://modern-os.projects.servhome.o...1.99_armel.deb As you will see, i've improved compilation and packaging : - the package takes 1.0 MB instead of 1.3 - version is set to 2.1.99 to avoid replacemetn by old version from repos... - the Name is now 'Grr NG' to differentiate it in the menu - icon is back Hope you love it ! Cheers. PS : in respone to barzam, are in the work : - customizable color in the whole UX from a single hue of color - un/foldable categories for feeds (labels are already showed up in the content header) - extra repos will be done as soon i will have an invite and an id for that... - for the donation, that's good from you but i really prefer greeting and smiles ;-) |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Great work, I'll try to test it later.
Aren't you going to upload the package to Extras? |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Thanks a lot TheBootroo!
As a regular user of Grr I think your revamped UX was much needed! Just something I noticed: - scrollbars: are they really needed? can't they be made non-permanent (ie appear when scrolling and then fade away)? - in feed list (portrait mode), it is possible to pan left or right too, which is annoying; moreover, the numbers of unread posts in each always become hidden and reappear only when panning left - the buttons on the settings dialog are too tiny and difficult to select with your thumb, especially the close button (this stands for the about dialog too) Anyway, thanks again for your efforts and the time you spent on this project! Great job! |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
moving buttons to the left side (optional) would be nice
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
sorry i can't move the button easily, but when i will have found a trick for moving buttons from one side to other instead of replicating (ouch) the whole toolbars and hiding the other i will do it
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
3 new items in feed. Enter feed, next, next - I don't see 3rd item. Repeated several times.
|
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
@TheBootroo
Great job! I really love this new release. Let me ask you something... is it possible to make GRR play the youtube videos that are embedded on a feed? |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
normally it can since i have activated plugins ...

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Really weird. I have same problem with trojita ui enhance. btw. Amazing work! Sometimes when I scroll list and tap item nothing happens. I have to tap double or more so it gets selected. It seems to happen after scrolling list. Also it would be nice to show tapped item higlited only when item is clicked (but not as in maemo default gui where highlighting just happens also when you are swiping).
Also home button IMO would be better as default maemo UI multitask button look. |

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Actually I meant that highlighting is good! It give user feedback, but the way itīs done in default maemo gui is IMO wrong. It should get highlighted after it detects tap that activates something. It might make transition little slower but IMO itīs quite important to give user some kind of feedback that tap was "successful".
Actually itīs the default way how android and iPhone menus work IIRC. |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
Just installed it and found a big problem for me : the article text cannot be zoomed in/out using the volume key. The text is too small for my strained eyes... Otherwise, I love it.

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
little things and feature requests :)
I like the style and speed of this app very much! Thank you so much! |

Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
I love the GRR app. Awesome work!! Was looking for something exactly similar.
I installed it yesterday. But I noticed that after installing this from OP's FTP repo, my CPU uilization bumped overnight and the CPU sucked my battery. This is the only app I installed yesterday and Batterygraph shows that my CPU utilization for the night before is 0. Is it just me? Or can someone else confirm this? |
Re: [Announce] Grr google reader client REMAKE
FR:
Leaving read items in list if item is read right now. Like in "web-version". Sometimes I press next accidentally and when I press prev, I can't return to not read item. End bug: next dosn't go next, but next+1 |
