As you are not going to stop i will answer your points.

READ PROPERLY as it states "The current status is that USB Host mode is not reliable".
When i did the mods needed to get OTG working it also meant i had to put a SEPERATE source of supply and make a new charging/supply socket to the left side of the usb port where i could find space for it.
I also made a new hole for a second usb port right next to the exsisting usb port.
Please go and read everything your link says and then go read my previous posts and you will find i am still ahead of the team working on host mode.
FINALLY realise i did about 3 days work to do this and no mean feat i can tell you even for me as a hardware ebgineer for over 25 years ! so how do you expect me to put these mods onto a community full of noobs and non engineers?.
ALSO i am playing with the idea of making it a potential earner and for that very reason i will NOT publish the mods.

cheers! i'll have to keep that link for the next time they tell me my earphones are only guranteed for 3months! and i dont know how the rest of the eu is getting on but here in britain i dont know ANYONE who has had ANYTHING replaced outside of the 1st year without buying an extended warranty.

Nokia designed this device in such a way it made it impossible mainly because usb host or otg needs a substantial supply seperate to the battery to power up each device attatched to the port via a hub or whatever and because the charging pin is actually in the usb port itself i had to make another input for this.
YES your right it needs software support and unfortunatly as Nokia are dumping Maemo it meant the sofware engineer and i agreed to cease working on the otg driver for now untill we know what Meego brings.
It is a very complex issue now thanks entirely to Nokia and for me a loss of a very good earning potential for now i might add, but i will not hold my breath because Nokia are so damm unreliable.

I have many dealings and run in's with Nokia device's and i was very unhappy with the design of the N900 BUT someone else's failure can be your own potential divider !.

We actually managed to "mount" keyboard, mouse, memory stick and a 320gb h/d and put the video out onto a 19" lcd screen, so that will give you some kind of idea the potential of the N900.

Please read the posts on here and let us get back to topic as i am more than anxious to learn of future support for the N900 as a viable OS is concerned.

NB also i forgot to say was a router which gave internet access but we did have a "hot wire" situation to deal with because the wiring could not support the current needed to supply all the addons, this was solved by giving all but keyboard and mouse external supply to them directly.

SO now you should be able to realise why for me at least the future of the N900 IS important as i have given away some of my own secrets that i really did want to keep to myself for now so please i ask everyone reading this thread either answer the topic to let everyone know of preferably Meego for the N900 or anything valuable to do with a promising OS that will be workable with ALL hardare device driver support.
This is something Nokia have failed on miserably and i really DO feel for every owner of the N900 as we paid at least 500 pound or more to be left with the situation we have right now.

Please no more war or flaming or name calling let us stick to the issue.

I am sorry you see it this way but if you understood how difficult it actually is working inside the N900 as in most mobile devices you should understand it is not a good or wise decision to let loose mods that require at least advanced soldering techniques, people would only go crazy after they screwed up the N900 !.

Hey i am not talking a fortune here you know! we had a figure of something like 20 quid for a full mod for your information and i refuse point blank to make people suffer more than they already have with Nokia.

In future course i will let go some of my work but as it is tied up with sofware problems i am waiting to move forward from here.

By the way YSSSS i bloodywell Will ASK THIS COMMUNITY TO HELP simply because there is no better place on this earth for great expertise than on this very community (argue with THAT!).

Nokia may well have screwed up big time but from where i am standing i see much to happen yet for our device.

I do see where you are coming from, but it was the same with overclocking; if people want to do it, then they will do it. You just add a big disclaimer above the howto :D I mean thats like not submitting stuff to hackaday in case people actually acted on it, this is a phone for hacking is it not?

I can't really complain about people wanting to make some money off of this though, I would probably do the same in your situation to be honest. :p

One easy peasy answer is " I HAVE MY DOUBT with the future" lol. If 2012 will be the end of the world as the Myan calender theory like sceptics think it is then what ever MeeGo is, it will never going to beat the IOS or the Droid in the race. But if the world won't end on 12/12/2012 then MeeGo may be catching up after 2012 but it won't be the best OS out there.

My theory is MeeGo (Children of Blood sucking Evil Empire Nokia with Intel) is like a baby inside the women's womb at the moment and we are not yet know which gender this one will come out in. Maemo is an adult and too old to continue and is dying.
Apple IOS is a young healthy young man and is the son of the Giant Evil Empire Apple.

The Droid is son of Giant Empire Google, it is still under the puperty and steriod to try to get big faster to challenging the IOS. Not to mention Wimo7 and Symbian and other few.

Wimo is dying and re-encanated in a billionair family and to be a better version called Wimo7 and is still a baby at the moment, though at this state, there are many supporters from MS the Evil Giant Empire.

All we can do now is to sit and wait for the War to start and then backing up the one that is winning. After all the loser will end in disaster and will be forgotten.

This community will exists for many years to come and will do what it can to bringing something new and useful to the slowly forgotten N900.

Yes i could not agree with you more here and we of all people as owners of the N900 have reason for doubt this is why the community is and can be a very good tool.

If only the team spirit would come together without the *****ing and arguing about who is right and who is wrong and simply get on with the job of making progress on the lagging N900.

You want to know what happens? Speak to the people who had Newtons and saw Jobs kill off everything. They banded together, released patches, fixed hardware glitches, and are still using their 2000s and 2100s 12 years after Apple pulled the plug. And you have the bonus of QT, where apps can still be readily made for the n900 via C++ or Python.

The n900 may not have an official future with Nokia, but can still live on for many years yet :)

Lavo i much like your post as it shows fighting spirit in the way it should be !!!.

The N900 WILL go on for many a year as it has massive potential BUT it will only do so with the help of this community this i am sure of and the sooner it gets its act together and stop the *****ing, get onto the problematic issues drawing in the people like myself who can contribute ( my side is hardware btw ) will be the day this community expands in a positive and healthy readable way.

Your post just shows what does happen in this world when people get it together and help eachother so thanks for that ok!!!.

Unfortunately it is far more difficult to provide proof of a positive. All FUD slingers need do is produce a claim - any claim and the job of FUD is done.
To disprove it is difficult because in most cases a company does not provide a specific response to a FUD claim.

For example. All future Android releases after froyo will not provide the source tree to the public. Technically to dispute that FUD you would need a statement from Google saying it was untrue and that future releases would be opensource.

As I said much harder to disprove a negative.

This is such a pointless thread.

The community will contribute to and improve the N900 ecosystem organically, a day at a time. The only thing that can be done now is to ensure that there are tools and infrastructure.

abill, if you want to contribute to the discussion in a *meaningful* way, start making a list of specific areas where you find Maemo 5 and its ecosystem to be lacking. No vitriol, just specific technical details. That way, when someone comes along and wants to contribute (say, a GSoC student), there's a place to start. FLOSS development is not about rallying the troops like a middle manager, it's about leading by example.

Is your N900 laggy? is the UI transition laggy? If it is then I'll send you mine. I've customised my own transition and it's bloody quick :) it feels like it lol. But I wiped my N900 just to start from fresh and to clean out all the buggy apps.

If you want to ***** and moan to Nokia due to their sub-par support and execution of N900 (in the commercial sense), then I'm with you on that.

But, if you relegate Nokia's part of the bargain and put its full weight on the community, then that's where we part ways. "The community" (that is to say 'we'), are not directly responsible for N900's success or its long term sustainability as a product.

Maemo Community is where you come to learn, to communicate, to meet new people (even some are arseholes type but it's a minority), to share knowledge and to participate in creating or improving something good on the Maemo device. The community is not Nokia (even it is owned by Nokia) it is a community of people like you see in everyday despite from different places and spoken different languages.

But together we are a community, together we can give the dying maemo5 a new hope even though it won't be for eternity but atleast for some years to come. This is what this community can do to the N900's future.

Hmm... then there is no answer that will satisfy the FUD slingers until Nokia finally speaks out.

But it also means that those that believe Nokia will continue support past PR1.3 are subscribing to some blind faith too.

So the middle of the road would be sit, wait and hope that development continues; or if things change Nokia will alert us in a timely manner.

I would have closed it pages ago but it's given people (yet another) place to vent. That said, many posts are flirting with the infracture system. Why do people insist on testing it?

People insist on finding the edge of the rules and testing the limits in all aspects of life.

However, I feel as if that this is an area that, if Nokia communicated with people properly, the FUD and the believers would be relegated to truly outrageous discussions and treated as such.

Being a fan shouldn't mean blind faith. Being a person that questions shouldn't relegate those questions to "troll" or "FUD slinger" status either. And I'm only interested in what's known, not what's speculated. No answers about lack of development after PR1.3. Or no answers about continued development after PR1.3.

In this thread there are no answers, only opinion. And for me, that's a waste of time. Either way, for or against Nokia in this thread... 100% waste o' time.

All said above... is merely my opinion.

The important part will be how this community picks up the pieces and supports this excellent OS. My "hope" will be invested there.
