In all seriousness, guys, I knew this pointless capacitive-resistive argument was heading toward nastiness. No one's gonna win it. Table it.

Nails have been the only way I can type on capacitative screens without a keyboard. If I ever try to use my fingers on a resistive or cap. touch screen I always mistype words.

One of the reasons why if I decide to get a device without a hard keyboard, it needs to have swype lol.

um who says I haven't? and why the hostility?
The very fact that you need a large area is what makes it inaccurate but again your nails do nothing they will not be the centre point.

I gave myself super tiny (and short) cramped hyperlinks, in portrait, zoomed out on a 900*600 res screen as challenges. And I could click every one using my fingernail edge only with my finger in a horizontal position. I can't always do this with the fleshy part of my finger.

Its just that I used experience right here right now and you didn't ask how I did it. Anyway I apologize for my annoyance.

Attached is an example page GSMarena.com as I saw it and I clicked the tiny model makes on the very left at random picks.

welcome to finland in mid jan - feb. I can accomodate you if you only show how easily you handle simple answering to call while taking a walk outside.

you might get your fingers amputated if you dont fiddle with "glove off glove on" -thingie and those capacitive gloves don't look so warm compared to good mittens with what I can use resistive touchscreen for simple operations.

Eh.. I always found the glove argument interesting. But that's because the gloves I wear in the Winter are snow shoveling/skiing gloves. Having a resisitive touchscreen in the blizzards earlier this year didn't seem to make a difference. I still couldn't touch the screen easily, nor use the stylus (again big big gloves) lol.

Why? Does it fix memory leaks?

Yes, but your finger is a conductor, but your nail isn't.

just tested short trimmed nail it does not work without minimum contact from finger at same time, so using nail is a myth on capacitive

Yet I'm also talking from experience from both using a capacitive phone and being a physicist.
You don't seem to understand what is causing your percieved increase in accuracy but it's not the shape of your nails pointy or otherwise. It's the pointy flesh so cut your nails into a pointy stylus, a flat, a shape of a unicorn, or remove your nail altogether it makes no difference as I said your nails are not doing anything other than providing the space preventing you from flating your flesh against the screen. For a much larger contact area than that required but all of which doesnt matter anyway because only a point will count a point which is harder to guess when you don't know the exact position under your flattened flesh. I will reiterate your nails are doing nothing,no matter their shape.

You have to depress the fingernail edge slightly (where the flesh almost starts). A little like a mouse click. But the finger is not touching from close observation.

lol, I am aware it is not the finger nail per se. Its just being used as a regular and consistent reference point (if you always use the same point) to transmit the capacitance from your finger as you press the nail in. That's probably what gives it its accuracy.

Anyway, I wouldn't be so stupid to suggest something that is easily non-reproducible and easily debunked with common objects. And I am sure what I am doing can be easily explained, but all I know is that it works using the stipulations set.

Again... your nail is not a conductor, so it can't "transmit" "capacitance"...

I will leave the suggestion as an experiment if anybody wants to try it. Or to explain it.

I have long fingernails. In my experience, using nail only results in no response whatsoever from a capacative screen. When using a friend's iphone (I know, I need to change my friends) I am forced to completely change my screen technique to get any reaction out of it. And yes, I have nails long enough to test nail only with no finger contact. ;)

That'd be right. Claws on my paws like crocodile jaws...

Either way, the point stands.

I can put my finger behind a cotton shirt and manipulate the iphone. I am beginning to think my point stands. Either that or I am superhuman, which wouldn't surprise me either:D.

This thing still has legs?

Cotton shirt isn't enough to block the effect. Other, thicker materials can be.

EDIT: oh, and I can hover a little over a trackpad and get inadvertant mouse moves/clicks. Way too often for my liking. But the capacitive field only extends so far. I'm betting RevdKathy never suffers this...

Just as pointless.

Now, has anyone seen the OP lately?

I have an old Amiga 500 and an Atari 1040STe. I liked 'em both for a lot of different things but I always preferred my 1040STe because it was just so much better and had a faster ASIC for networking and had a hella fast DMA port in the back to plug in my old SyQuest 88 hard drive at full SCSI speeds! :)

Come on, you know you want to do yet ANOTHER topic change, this time to Atari vs Commodore, right? ;)

brainwashed by FUD ? how about brainwashed by nokia promises and whispers of OSS ?

2 sides of the same coin

get a life ppl - if ppl do not like the n900 they do not like it. If ppl like the n900 they like it. Inevitably these are 2 different consumer types anyway so why fight over a comparison between oranges and apples ? The bitterest posters are usually those who got suckered by Nokia's marketing and so bought the wrong device for their needs - OF COURSE the appropriate response there is to recommend a different device - community support is NOT going to fix the problem if customer expectations do not match device capabilities. By pretending otherwise you are just perpetuating the fanboy side of FUD.

ANd its a public forum, opinions are like *******s, everyone has one. No one side is more "right" and so there can be no "brainwashing". If you want only ONE side of the argument to be presented, then get admins to moderate every post just like they do at Apple forums. Or ban anyone who posts a negative post to get the echo chamber you want.

Chortle.. It isn't brainwashing unless masses actually believe the stuff being peddled!

Nokia is really bad at selling stuff. I get where the idea of rebranding services to Ovi comes from, but I still don't get it!

There is a difference between constructive criticism, and even complaining, and trollish behavior. Along the same lines, there is a difference between between being able to acknowledge the positive aspects of the N900, and being happy with it, and between being a fan-boy.
