Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Info Thread

By the by--my Samsung Galaxy Tab already got the newest updated Android Market.. and, best of all, I got the new vector-mapped Google Maps 5.0 on both my Tab and my Droid... and it is INCREDIBLE. Everybody here in the office went NUTS over it.. and the guy in the next cubicle (who was literally about to buy a Blackberry today) decided instead to go out today to get a Samsung android Galaxy S phone after seeing that alone. He was already paying for a navigation service that offered nothing quite this fluid and useful... and this is FREEEEEEE from Google. :)

As for the new Market... I think I liked the old one better. I HATE the wasted space at the top and the general layout, to me, seems less informative, less intuitive and less useful.

Ah--you're right! It's using an Intel Atom Oaktrail, which makes it fall into the x86 line of processors. Far more impressive, then. Although, I'd probably ditch Windows 7 for something else, it might make a pretty darn nice tablet, then.

The Ocosmos is running on an Atom processor with Windows 7, and you probably could replace Windows 7 with some Linux distro. Yes Windows Phone 7 does suck.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Info Thread

OK.. this is interesting. I have my Samsung headphones on right now, watching The Today Show (video podcast feed of the show from NBC) here at work. I decided to get up to go to the break room on the other side of the building to get some ice for my drink (I sit on one extreme end, break room is on the other side of the building I work in (tallest building in Hartford, CT, in fact). I leave my Galaxy Tab in my cubicle and began walking with my cup--no loss of audio. I keep stridently walking and walking and get to the break room where it FINALLY began cracking up a little. WOW! That's easily far beyond the 30 feet that Bluetooth is supposed to be rated for. Without measuring, I think it's closer to 100 feet away. I'm not sure if it's to the Tab's credit, or the Samsung headphones, or both. Once I finish charging up my Motorola headphones, I'll have to try the same experiment to see if there's a difference. :)

Am with you. I didn't like it.

I did a factory reset on my tab because it was really LAGGY, and got the old market back.

How do I keep the old market?
Last time I think it upgraded itself.

I don't think that you can. It will eventually upgrade automatically on you again, so long as you have the Market Updater running (which you need). More importantly, you'll never get the 24-hours return policy back.. you're stuck with the new 15-minute return policy, no matter what you do.

Wow £399. That is quite an amazing price. Still think I will wait to see what happens on Boxing Day though.

@crazbelize Why is the Tab called SGH-T849? Thought it was GT-P1000

@danramos What is the name of the Samsung headset you were using? Need to check it out.

I'll point you back to my two relevant posts where I talked about my two favorites...

Where I said...
Quote:

I have two headsets that work GREAT for me...
Overall, my favorite is still my Motorola S305 bluetooth headset. They sound pretty good and they work GREAT for phone calls too. Callers tell me they hear me better with these than they do when I just use my phone. They appears to work great with both my Motorola Droid and with my Samsung Galaxy Tab alike.

The other pair I really like, out of my collection of bluetooth headsets, is my Samsung SBH600 Noise-Canceling Bluetooth Headset. They suck miserably at phone calls (the microphones are terrible) but the audio quality for listening to music or podcasts is incredibly good! PLUS, this headset can also with with a 3.5mm plug as well, so it's not JUST for Bluetooth and can use them with my Nintendo DS, in addition to the Androids.
...and http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...postcount=1482
Where I said...
Quote:

Well, in general, I would handily recommend the Motorola S305 because they're inexpensive but deliver excellent audio quality for the price--and especially because they serve that dual purpose so well, listening to stereo audio and making phone calls with good sound quality. They are, indeed, very light and they're reasonably comfortable--better than most bluetooth stereo headsets I've owned or tried. You certainly couldn't go wrong for the price. You can probably do what I did and get the Samsung later for those other times when you want to just bliss out to some music--but in the meantime, the Motorola are an all-around better purchase for your first pair. That's my opinion, anyway. :)
Hope that helps. :)

Had the chance of playing with a Galaxy tab....excellent, fast UI....but I was let down by the lack of physical keyboard and that awful camera....I might as well wait for the next generation dual core phones/tablets.....for now I don`t see a reason to let my trusty N900 go.

I think you worded it wrong: It's not a lack of physical keyboard, it's obtained a light-weight profile and a far better on-screen Swype keyboard.

The camera, I'll admit, is poor but admittedly takes surprisingly good pictures and video for such a low resolution.

Waiting isn't a bad idea, though, despite being stuck with your N900 for now.

Now after having both devices, the n900 and the galaxy tab for a while now and carrying them both around all the time.
n900:
I do love the Phone/skype/voip application(my Phone rings and I don't even know if its voip mobile or skype call without looking) on the n900, same with the messaging: one program does it all.
Galaxy Tab:
Still love swype
and I am starting to get annoyed with the ads in basically every program

I can imagine why that would be annoying. But the upside is you get tons of free apps. e.g angry birds full pack you have to pay for on ios but is free on android but with ads. I think danramos mentioned he rooted his tab and then did something to block ads.

There's an easy way to remove ads when you're playing angry birds: just long-press power and select 'flight mode' before you start the game. It also works for 'Angry Birds Seasons' except that the first time you visit a new xmas level you have to not be in flight mode (I think it checks back with a central server to ensure you've reached the correct date).

Plus as a bonus you can be sure you won't get any annoying phone calls while you're playing. :^)

Yeah right, "stuck" with the n900, lol... I'd argue that you don't really need the tab with an n900 in your pocket. It's a waste of money.

Isn't the main point of the Tab having a much bigger screen than a phone for a more enjoyeable browsing and media viewing experience? So the N900 with its tiny <4 inch screen is a totally different experience from the Tab. If it had a 5 inch screen like Dell Streak I would be more inclined to agree with you.

Yeah, but the Dell Streak is a monster. These devices are fine if you're not worried about them being not quite portable.

Easier/better to root and install AdFree imo, kills nearly all ads in all apps (including Angry Birds), as well as when browsing. The best reason to root the Tab for me.

Now you are talking total crap. I have a Streak and it is a portable as any other phone including an iPhone.

Please stop spouting uninformed opinionated rubbish as though it were fact. I don't care how self important it makes you feel.

BTW Angry Birds is just great on the Streak and, when I am through with playing, the phone slips unobtrusively back into my shirt pocket.

Someone's getting worked up. Just because you don't think it's big, doesn't mean it really isn't. I don't care how big your pockets are. You'll get funny looks if you use the streak as a phone (but I'm sure you know that already).

Think I would feel a million times worse and be much worried what people think of me using an iphone than a Dell Streak. The Dell Streak may not make me look cool but it would at least make me look like an individual rather than someone who follows the crowd. And who cares what people think if you have a great big screen for browsing and media consumption.

I didn't mean it like that at all. That was just to show that I'm obviously not alone in thinking it is indeed a big device.

Yep! I recommend getting z4root, tap the ROOT button and download, install and run the AdFree app. It makes life very, very bearable again. Rooting also opensyou up to being able to run TitaniumBackup so you can back-up all your apps and uninstall the crapware they forced down your gullet. HIGHLY recommended with very, very little downside.

The downside being, you also don't get calls when you want them. :P I'd rather be able to choose how I'd want my game interrupted or not.

I'd argue the N900 was a true waste of money. How's that Flash 10.1 coming? Updates? I've had my Droid for well over a year, now, and although I had been told it's not supposed get Android 2.3, there's already a copy of 2.3 for Droid floating around and being tested. I expect the Tab will get much of the same community support. MeeGo is still an iffy prospect, near as I can tell, but I hope it turns out well. On the other hand, Android updates are a tangible reality, not a far-flung future hope.

I'd argue that the Dell Streak is, indeed, a BIG device! HUGE! ...but still very portable. My Samsung Galaxy Tab fits wonderfully in my pockets and it's HUGE! I imagine the Dell Streak is that much more portable while giving a far better big-screen experience than the N900. Ironically, the Streak seems like a smaller unit over-all than the N900. Bigger screen, thinner and smaller body. Oh the irony. You seem to have posted far more about this than any one person in these several posts on this subject. NOW who's the one getting worked up? :)

Anyway, it's pretty obvious that you don't like the n900 very much (don't own one either), so why are you constantly posting in threads to complain about it's features or comparing it to other devices and mobile OSs? Doesn't really make much sense.

Mainly to contrast it against what IS out there. More importantly to point out where Maemo could/should improve. I used to also follow and post in the bugtracking site until they stopped bothering with N800 Maemo updates (which were rife with WONTFIXes and FIXED IN FREMANTLE). Is that the same as trolling? Why are you in this thread? :)

Re: Samsung Galaxy Tab Info Thread

Getting back on the thread's topic, though... it seems that a new ClockworkMod compatible kernel has finally been released for the Verizon version of the Galaxy Tab in addition to the already-modded kernel for the T-Mobile version. It effectively converts the jfs(?) partition on the tablet over to ext4 and installs the ClockworkMod firmware.

I haven't loaded it and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone yet, though. I've read many forum posts on XDA about people who're running into various problems with nandroid restores. It's still very early but once they iron it out, it'll let the Verizon version of the tablet take advantage of nandroid to make full-system images of the tablet and restore back to any point.

I think they'd already suggested that ages ago--the Tab really is their first foray into the tablets. I'm hoping that by having dived into a Galaxy Tab, consumers might at least confirm that there IS an interested market in this mid-sized tablet range (7-inch).

I am VERY sure that the Tab is the only reason why there'll even be an iPad v2 this quickly with cameras and all. Until Apple gets honest-to-God competition, they tended to be happy with lazy progress. (i.e. 1st gen vs 2nd gen iPhones, iTouch, iPods, etc. back when there wasn't very good competition).
