One of them is Launcher Pro - the one I'm using on my Tab; others work too, you'll see in the program's menu, with the notable exception of touchwiz

The thing is, I like touchwiz, don't really want to use another launcher. Plus I've heard launchers eat battery life.

I use Zeam for a launcher... it's minimal, lacking some features, but doesn't eat up my battery life at all. I'd just avoid using heavy themes with a ton of launcher specific (read: Calendar) widgets.

Now... a question for you all. I've been on the hunt to replace Penultimate and Readdle (both iPad) for my Android tablet.

I just need a good eBook reader that doesn't mind the larger PDF's that I throw at it, and can catalog/list my eBooks.

And I'd love a pen/note taking tool. I've tried: Extensive Notes, FreeNote, Handrite, MaplePaint (ok, I like this one for different reasons). SyncSpace has come the closest, but it's not... there yet.

Maplepaint, Evernote, and note everything do a pretty good job for note taking.

Thanks. But let me clarify... I'm seriously looking for handwriting notes. I have Evernote installed as well already.

Moon+ was exactly what I was looking for.

Not without either setting up folders and placing that into the bottom launcher area or using something else to accomplish what you want.

I mean, within Zeam, I used to have a folder that's set aside for all of the tools that I use the most frequently. I set that folder - an Android standard - into my launcher and went with that while using Zeam.

Now, I have adopted a different method, SiMi Folder is what I use now, on my desktop. It's a bit more like iOS style folders and does what I need - I can scroll left to right within an expanded folder... mind you, I also own an iPad, so that form of folders is quite "normal" to me.

The others have pointed to what might be a 1 for 1 replacement for what you're looking for from your Maemo 5 experience.

Does Android retain market tags on apps? I'm not sure that I've ever seen tags like "games" or "utilities" and such on applications anywhere within the operating system. I think that would be a great thing to have, though... and I'm kinda surprised if it doesn't exist somewhere but I'm not aware of it.

As for launchers that eat battery life--most of the best ones don't. LauncherPro is what I use and it doesn't... mainly your battery vampires tend to be the widgets that run on top of the launchers, not the launchers.

If you go market.android.com there is a "Categories" button. There's a lot of them but some apps are under 2 or 3 categories.

The stylus works by having a conductive point that works through creating heat through having it powered by battery and unlike active digitizers it doesn't require specialized hardware and probably could work with most capacitive touch screens. The second one is a ripoff of the livescribe smartpen accept it doesn't require specialized paper and it wirelessly sends data to an idevice. The idea clearly isn't new but the implementations seems pretty well done. Also knowing that it is an Apple product, Apple will make a big deal about call it revolutionary and make stylus popular again, that is if it makes it to market. So I would be VERY happy to see GOOD (not those crappy capacitive styly like the the pogo type solutions) cost effective solutions for taking notes and drawing with a precise point end.

So... first Steve Jobs says that "If you need a stylus, you failed" or something like that, and now they apply for a patent for something that their god almighty says it's a fail?

Of course this will be welcomed by fanbois as revolutionary and magical!

No, no... I get that. What I mean is--is any of that Android Market category classification on the handset at all somewhere? I don't think that it is. Would be GREAT if it did, for exactly this sort of thing.

Unfortunately this post has no news on Android tablets, sorry, it's more a friendly request for advice. I'm on the hunt for a phone for my father. His birthday is coming up and he is always complaining about his phone. The requirements are

Easy to use (he is not very computer/technology literate)
Large Screen (his eyesight isn't what it use to be)
Very Solid Build

Any advice on an android phone that fits this criteria?

Do you need it to be on any particular carrier, because I could name several devices that meet that criteria generally the best of what you describe are made by HTC.

It doesn't need to be on any particular carrier but I think I should point out that I'm in europe, so carriers are not as important here when choosing a device. Which HTC would you recommend in particular?

HTC Sensation the camera and build are pretty good. HTC Sense is generally considered excellent. Also the screen is 4.3inch 960x540 very sharp very crisp.

Incredibly, I was going to recommend EXACTLY the same device. I recently had someone ask me about that device and I looked into it--and I LOOOOVE what I saw. ESPECIALLY for the average person--it LOOKS and WORKS beautifully, simply and yet has GREAT specs and pretty good battery life to boot. The HTC Sensation! Highly recommended from me too, then!

Re: The Epic Android Thread

I also highly recommend the Sensation.

Nice big screen, ok battery life and the phone itself is very zippy and smooth. I've also noticed that because the back cover of the phone loops all around, if you dropped it, it looks like you could just buy a replacement cover without wrecking your screen.

I've had mine a couple of months now and very happy with my choice.

It was... you're very welcome... and it's an INCREDIBLE game. I didn't even get any free version--I went out of my way to wait for the Android Market version to PAY for it (no ads and to support it!). I... love this game. :) I loved it from the moment I saw it on iOS and then heard it was coming to Android. :) I'm glad that I was able to get the word out to tell you all about it and I'm glad you probably enjoyed it as much as I do.

Not really. I think I remember reading that there are a few devices with the HARDWARE to do so, but there's no software support for it. Check this article out too: http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/goog...les/98672.aspx

I think the mentality is that most new cars come with bluetooth streaming support, you can install bluetooth streaming support on even the oldest cars with a cheap add-on in the vehicle, and it sounds better and carries far more information than just audio. So, they think... why bother with FM transmitting anymore? Hell, I drive my 1974 VW Beetle around in the bright summer, rocking along to Three Dog Night's Shambala off of a bluetooth speaker setup... I REEEEALLY don't care about FM transmitters (especially since the built-in radio is AM-only anyway... heheh).

Anyway, getting back to the point of your question... You CAN get an external FM transmitter for $5 these days, if you really want one. (I have one of those, too.. but haven't used it for years.)

I find that I use the FM transmitter a lot when going on holiday (renting cars) or when I'm in somebody elses car. It just seems so strange to not include it in newer phones, it's not exactly expensive or space consuming, and whats even stranger is to include it but not have the software side of things sorted out.

Might be the sim card. Market enabler says it changes "gsm.sim.operator.numeric".

Source code is in market-enabler.googlecode.com.
Looking at the source (I am no java coder though), the key limes seem:
Code:

"setprop gsm.sim.operator.numeric " + code, "killall com.android.vending", "rm -rf /data/data/com.android.vending/cache/*" };
