Re: The Epic Android Thread
This is bad news.
If I had to choose a product between Apple and HTC, Apple would win over its superior hardware styling, superb software implementation and general wow factor .... but this makes it clear Apple is an EVIL company. HTC seems likely to lose this battle, because they didn't get licensing for 2 very vague patents, which is absurd. I hope one day (soon) the sleeping giant, Google, rises and topples Apple around HARD so that the damage they cause will be reverted to them, teaching them a lesson about the circle of life and karma. |

Re: The Epic Android Thread
FYI: I think I might pull a Cap'n here. I'm finding that most of my time spent on TMO has been mainly spent arguing unconvincingly to a group of people/developers/fanbois who are stagnating. Maemo has been relegated to an orphaned status now, The N9 is hardly a competitive or relevant device for ANYONE in either Maemo or MeeGo camps, MeeGo isn't really the point of this forum, and Maemo development has generally stagnated or at best gone into a sharp downward useless/pointless trend compared to just about anything else. So, I think I'll be selling away my N800 for spare change and participating here far, far less.
I want to thank everyone here in this thread--by far the best thread around here for a long time now--you guys have been GREAT to talk to and I hope I can still talk to many of you here or elsewhere whenever I can. Since the folks here in this thread are likely to be Android interested, I hope to see you around the XDA forums or at the Droid Fans Facebook (and now Google+) feeds. Hopefully, someday, MeeGo can finally be taken seriously and I can revisit many of you over at MeeGo.org again on a regular basis. Take care and be well!! |

http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/20/l...ands-on-video/ Lenovo has just unveiled two Android tablet one is a generic tablet 10.1inch tablet based on ideapad notebook line, while the other is based upon the legendary thinkpad line. The thinkpad based product is 50 dollars more expensive than the ideapad one. The thinkpad tablet also offers a optional stylus very much like the HTC Flyer and includes special applications for using the stylus, the digitizer like the one in the HTC flyer is based upon N-Trig tech. Also the Thinkpad tablet is 500 dollars which is the same price as an HTC Flyer and offers the Thinkpad qualities and reliability. IMO if the Flyer wants to remain competitive lower the price to 400 dollars and release the 10 inch puccini soon for 500 dollars. Also the Thinkpad has optional keyboard portfolio which offers a Thinkpad style keyboard and touchable do instead of a Trackpoint. |

I'll keep mostly reading updates to this thread and following Maemo/Meego evolution.
Any of you in Facebook or Google+ ? I have invites for Google+ if any of you wants in, and I am starting to invite all my friends there too :D |

@H3llb0und
Google+ invite!?! Please! Thanks Sno |
Re: The Epic Android Thread
@dan It does seem like the folks that are *in charge* are dead set on staying Maemo/'MeeGo only. Despite the fact that Maemo is dead, and MeeGo handset UI is dead. Instead of broadening the appeal to more people (and maybe picking up some new blood in the process for Maemo/MeeGo) they'd rather keep it niche.
Thanks for all the great comments dan. *off topic* which got me thinking, if Maemo is so open, why aren't there more devices running it (say even an old x86 notebook)? If MeeGo is so open, why was the handset UI dropped? Couldn't our community pick it up and keep working on it, and still be under the MeeGo name? How many fully tweaked and customized ROM's are there for Maemo (1? powerkernel)? On the other hand, the evil more closed than Maemo/MeeGo, how dare you call it open, Android get put on more devices every day. Any mainstream (even a lot of not so mainstream) devices have multiple ROMs available, and a lot of devices have even been upgraded to versions beyond which the manufacturers support. Heck, from what I've read Android on the N900 is now nearly fully functional (hopefully soon to be released). Technical licensing, jargon, bs aside, which OS seems more open? *on topic* I keep waiting for a new 7" tablet to be released. It seems like there are several good options out there, but nothing actually in the wild yet. Last I heard, the Huawei MediaPad is looking at an October release (but nothing has been decided on firmware upgrades for it). I'd love to get my hands on a Asus Memo, but there doesn't seem to be much recent info out there for it. Generally "lemmyslender" is odd enough that if you see it on any other boards, it's most likely me. Len Palmer on facebook, following droid fans A google+ invite would be appreciated. |

I'd get happily a google+ invite too, thanks a lot. On facebook, I'm Ernesto de Bernardis.

Re: The Epic Android Thread
Just upgraded to the new 1.3 version of netflix on my vibrant running a 2.3.4 rom. Just for fun copied it over to my s7 running 2.2.
It actually worked! (previous versions did not). Much happier watching on a 7" screen. Just thought I'd pass along the new version may work on more devices than officially listed. |

For my S7, as far as I know, Huawei released several different versions of 2.2 for different countries (none for the USA to date). Of those multiple versions, Netflix only worked on the Brazilian version. I had downloaded several prior versions of Netflix (from xda, etc) and none had worked on the rom I was using for my S7. It was a heavily modified version which included several new things from the Slim rom (framework stuff). Netflix must have changed something regarding the DRM libraries (or checks?) as the prior versions didn't work on the S7 and the 1.3 does (without changing anything else on the S7). Fired up the prior version, crashed out before playing the movie, installed the new version over the old one, movies now play. Perhaps a lot more of the 2.2 versions will work now? Old version I had was 5.4MB, new version 7MB. Perhaps the libraries are (partially) included? Just saying if you have a 2.2 device that it didn't work on, it may be worth trying the 1.3 version. |
Re: The Epic Android Thread
I just bought a Desire Z an hour ago, comes with new box, accessories, handset, spare battery, crappy plastic cover, 8GB microSD.
Good condition, $250. So I've got five phones!!! 1) Vodafone Nokia 1616 ->useless carrier locked, now on Virgin 2) SGS i9000 came free on my contract. 3) Motorola DEXT i bought 2 weeks ago 4) HTC Desire Z bought tonight. 5) The Beast aka Nokia N900 Desire Z will become my main device. So I'll sell the SGS i9000 for $350-$400. Also sell Nokia 1616 for $0-$20. Maybe sell the Motorola DEXT for $100-$150. Or gift DEXT to my lil brother. Maybe in 6months I'll sell the Desire Z for $250-$350 and upgrade to a similar device with A9 SoC. Maybe I'll sell the N900 at that time aswell probably for $200-$300. Phone Management 101 (lmao) edit: I will be optimizing android on all devices and I'll make some youtube video demo's and paste them here, when I get the time. I'm really surprised by the progress android made from 2.1 to 2.3.4 its what I had envisioned for Moblin/MeeGo all this time. |
Re: The Epic Android Thread
Also leaked from China a potential 3d HTC Flyer

By the way--I'm exceedingly pleased to see a bunch of you on Google+! Thanks for all the connections and here's hoping we continue to be a community wherever/whenever we go! :)
Also--just to make sure it's relevant, I have Google's Google+ Android app and I'm very VERY pleased with it! There... obligation met for a new posting! ;) |

I think the young people have put me off facebook, but it would be nice to keep in touch. It's such a shame that this site has become so barren to what it was. I have learned a great deal from a lot of very informed people and I can only thank everyone for their opinions and for not taking themselves too seriously, especially on this thread. I shall still pop on everyday to see what is happening but I fear the end is not far off. |

Seems like a BUNCH of you are already over at Google+... good for you! I must say that it's been far better, generally, than the forums for conversation. Adding to that, the much more personal touch of throwing together a voice, video, chat and youtube HUDDLE session. So far, I'm really digging Google+ over Facebook! :) I hope they fix up the Android app, though, it seems to be lacking.

my nick is "gabby131" on Google plus! If you want to get bored, then add me :D
EDIT: oooops! my "Search visibility" was unchecked...sorry, It's checked now :) |
Re: The Epic Android Thread
well don't get me wrong, Android CAN work AS WELL as iOS if they got a good developing team behind it to make the tablet type apps, but if you want something MORE functional than the iOS, you need a platform that wasn't originally a phone's platform.

Re: The Epic Android Thread
Ok, I had to come back to post this, it's too cool....
First off, thanks to all my friends for their kind words and invite requests. It means more than you know. If you have a spare, I'd love to join Google+ with you all! Anywhoo, here's the reason I am such a strong proponent of the Exynos 4210 SoC (found in the Galaxy SII). Here is a video of the ODroid-A (featuring the Exynos 4210) running Ubuntu like a CHAMP at a full-sized-laptop 1366x768 resolution . It's running at a clip that might have you thinking it was running on a netbook! Next years tablets will be full fledged laptop replacements -- yes for 'real' productivity too. http://hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/_...1950020265.JPG http://hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/_...2019118977.png VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCPBmnAydlQ BLOG: http://hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/blog/blog_list.php For those that don't know, the Exynos 4210 (AFAICT) is a pure ARM system-on-chip. All of the design IP was created by ARM, which has benefits of quick time to market, and insight into on-chip efficiencies. It also features an amazingly powerful GPU (Mali 400). The only SoC currently on the market to challenge this on all fronts is the Apple A5. Damn, I miss this forum.... |
