and can we make calls by going to gmail.com through the N900 microb? the plugin is required?

We already have a google voice application, why would you have to do from a browser?

GVDailer requires a callback number.
The web interface will call directly from the web interface and talk directly from there. No phone required

Re: Calling from Gmail

Very interesting indeed. Depending on the bandwidth needed for reasonable quality, this could be a serious contender to Skype indeed. Skype does a very good job under bad network conditions though, they've been in the business for longer already...

Is the Plugin API open ? I guess not. So unless Google opens up the source code to be integrated and compiled for Maemo, this will be a no-go. Think of similar to Skype Telepathy plugin.

Unless, of course, if it could made to work on top of the current google audio/video plugin in Maemo.

Anyone aware of unused functions in that one ? Eg. setting up a POTS call from the GV server and transcoding it to Google Talk audio, charging to the GV account ?

If you're talking about qgvdial, then I object you honour - that isn't true!

qgvdial has been able to dial out using your phone number or skype for some time now.

yes, but won't it use your minutes if you are not using skype?
The new gmail Google voice will be completely free to US/CAN (for this year).. no minutes required

This will be interesting if I can use this overseas where Google Voice does not forward to international phones. I can log on to Chat via wifi and someone can call my number and I can still pickup. This is not available today and the new features will enable that in the future.

What is your experience with this setup? On my setup, some call quality is great, but sometimes I get drop outs or bad calls.

So there's not an way to use the browser to phone combination on the N900 without using a third party app and/or callback number?

Honestly, i don't have any problems. I also use it to make outgoing calls without a callback number.

I have been using Gizmo/Google Voice for a while now. It's amazing. Saves me some money. Call quality is acceptable and not worse than Skype.

Do you have a gizmo account? try www.gizmocall.com
I was able to make calls successfully, but the mic on my n900 dint pick up my voice :o . But it can be made to work, if we had to, right?

Re: Calling from Gmail

Sometime back, gizmo5 allowed users to use google voice for outgoing calls( they don't, anymore). I had done that, hence I can make outgoing calls using google voice without having a callback number. Only downside is, the call duration is limited to 3 minutes, but you can call as many times you want.

A gizmo account is a callback number.

You mean they don't register new users? I have a Gizmo account and can make outgoing calls through it. I didn't know there was a 3 minutes call limit. Is there a limit in receiving calls?

I don't think you quite got my question - but yes, I do have a Gizmo account. And I have a Google Voice account too - Grand Central before that.

I don't need a Gizmo account to use the Voice via Gmail though in the browser as they've currently rolled out. And if I recollect, you cannot get a Gizmo account if I didn't have one - signup has been stopped.

Therefore, my question stands. Can you fire up Microb, log into Gmail via Microb and make calls via Microb using Google Voice?

I don't think you can call land/cell phones (fill the right term here) through Gmail neither regular Skype.

Thank you for the answer. I do find the ability to call from Gmail to phones very attractive and useful.

I wonder if this will ever come out for Maemo or Android.

They don't register new users, existing users cannot change/ add google voice as the outgoing plan. There is no limit on incoming calls.
This is applied only when you have integrated your google voice with your gizmo account.

Ok the icon is there for me now. I was able to call my n900 and home phone. The quality is great and it shows incoming number as 1-700-... which is a US number.

Sorry, I am a bit behind my RSS news, and didn't read the message all the way. Apparently, Google goes nuts once again :D

Now free incoming and outgoing US/Canada calls be made using Google Talk, meaning there won't be a need for Gizmo account.

Not possible, until google releases a plugin for armel.

Ooh and keep in mind that free calls are until the end of the year.

Do you have a link to that? I've been trying to find an official one.

Edit: NVM, found this:

Clip:
"Walker said that Google is committed to maintaining free calls to the U.S. and Canada through the end of the year, and that the current plan is to maintain this rate. He said that Google believes it can make enough money on international calls to sustain the service."

If I were to guess I'd say US and Canada remains free after the end of the year.

Re: Calling from Gmail

When I call my cell/landline phones from gmail, CallerID shows my Google Voice number.

No luck in using N900 to make the calls. On the offchance that it would work, I opened up Phone, selected my gmail account as the call type, and dialed. Gave me an "Incorrect address" error.

Descalzo 2010-08-26 05:33

Re: Calling from Gmail

Further test:
I connected Google Talk to my GV account, but when I call it, my N900 doesn't ring, just my browser. When close gmail in the browser, Google Talk doesn't ring at all.

gsever 2010-08-26 15:49

Re: Calling from Gmail

No rpm support to test this on Fedora. Probably Android will be the first getting this as a mobile platform. Or should we consider running as Easy Ubuntu :D

Descalzo 2010-08-26 17:44

Re: Calling from Gmail

Don't know if Android will get it or not. Do they even have Google Voice and Video chat yet?

I'm hoping that it will be some tweak to the GTalk plugin that will enable us to at least receive calls on our N900s. Who can say?

arora.rohan 2010-08-26 17:53

Re: Calling from Gmail

If that happens..then is it safe to assume..that for the whole year.. people would be able to make free calls to USA and Canada over 3g? damn!

That's a shame. I hope Google opens up the API's and someone here figures it out. Would be incredibly awesome to have true VOIP and also skip the whole callback thing.

Yes, that's my understanding of how the feature works. You need to have the Gmail web site literally sitting open at the time the call comes in to answer the call that way. I'm sure Google will expand the API before long to allow for friendlier third-party apps. I'm also sure that calling functionality will be sprinkled throughout their search features in due time. :)
