Multiple Desktops vs extended screens

Afternoon All

Rather than having multiple desktops, which is a cool feature but can be a pain switching from desktop to desktop, is it possible to extend one desktop from the standard 4 screens to say, 6 or 8 screens?

Would make finding things a whole load easier.

Thanks

I didn't understand what you are talking about but modified hildon home accepts at least 8 desktops if I don't remember wrong.

I believe what is being requested is a desktop that allows horizontal scrolling in the way that the application screen allows vertical scrolling. The desktop would be 640 px high and 800 X n pixels wide. Or, perhaps, the OP is looking for something exactly like the application screen that is 800 pixels wide and 640 X n pixels high. You remain on the same desktop but can tootle around it a bit. But, I am not the OP, so I am guessing

My guess is that the OP is currently using an add-on like Desktop Activity Manager to switch between several complete sets of desktops, and instead would like the directly accessible (by sideways scrolling) desktops to be increased from 4 to 8.

tzsm98 and pwm are exactly right. Ideally I'd like to see a single desktop with as many horizontal scrolling screens as possible. More screens = more ease of use for frequent apps as well as having more contact shortcuts.

Is it possible to have more than 4 horizontal screens per desktop?

Yes. You may have upto 9 - Clicky

Dont think you can have more than one "desktop" though.

Tap the desktop and select the tooth wheel.

Tap the desktop menu top toolbar and select manage views.

Check the selected desktops.

I was using 7 desktops. Would switch to 9 if there was a way to automatically jump to the desktop you want like the way you can on HTC Sense. Scrolling through 9 desktops can be a real pain.

There is a way to do it with the command line (or a C, Python, etc. program) - setting the gconf key /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/current. If you want an icon for this, use dcew or queen beecon. If you want a keyboard combination, use keyboard-shortcuts package.

Sounds interesting. But could you elaborate? What exactly do I do to set the gconf key (whatever that is) and what is the command line code for this?

The command

gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/current -t int 7

Changes to desktop view number 7.

Thanks. That is greeeat. Can't wait to try it out. Though I don't know how long it will take Nokia to finally send me a replacement N900 for my faulty one.

Now I will definitely move up to 9 desktops. Just need to figure out how to make my own custom beecons to take me to each desktop. I use Queen Beecon but so far have only used beecons made by others.
