how tired are you of hearig about android?

I remember when I was reading up about phone tech like 6 months ago to make a buying decision. I would look at sites like netbooknews, gizmodo, engadget and others. There was a lot if interesting information, now it seems its all just bla bla bla carrier will release bla bla bla android phone and bla bla bla will have an android tablet out by years end. Is android really all that? I do look forward to meego getting a shot. at least its accessible linux not completely locked down correct?

I'm tired of hearing Nokia sucking.

BUT, i don't want to squelch the news.
I want Nokia to shape up and put up a good fight.

nokia sucks thats for sure, they make a big fuss about their new handset and as soon as it is released they forget about it and start telling people buy the new one.

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

android is becoming a bit boring i admit. it's what windows is for business notebooks.... you got a new notebook at the office? what os? oh! windows! really? ;)

i don't mind though. it's there, it seems to be a safe bet for handset makers, so they use it... and you read about it. at the moment. let's see what's hot in 3 years.

the only thing i am getting tired of is journalists referring to it as "the linux for smartphones". we all know how wrong this is - but you cannot explain that without explaining the difference between linux, the kernel, and linux, the system that we usually know as linux+gnu utils+x11+some de facto standards like dbus and gstreamer and bluez and hal and gtk and/or qt.... i wish more people would listen to RMS and call the whole damn thing just gnu or gnu/linux or even jennifer. nobody would think android is jennifer.... only because android uses a variant of a so-called "kernel" (what's that, anyway?) which happens to be used in jennifer, too. :)

i guess any type of hype gets annoying after a while, but as far as i'm concerned android has done a lot to bring a decent OS to the masses.
apple, on the other hand, i wish i never had to hear about again.

android is overrated, still amateur in some points... as is Maemo, strong in some points and strangelly amateur in others...

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

I got rid of Android and as time goes by I'm more and more glad I did. It's a limited OS and I always had major Big Brother concerns with Google.

Now since the Google/Verizon anti-net neutrality proposal, I'm even more convinced I did the right thing. I'll never support to Google again. Oh, I'll use it for search and Google Voice for business, but I'll never spend any money on any Android or Google products. Never.

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

I'm in on Ykho's point of view. I am interested in technological progression, so reading about what companies, other than Nokia, are doing is something I do. What I do get tired of is the amount of bashing and pissing competition.

I made my choice for a Nokia machine I really enjoy lots. I don't have a desire to mock people's choice for a competitors make.

Although I tend to agree with the fact that Nokia does a lousy job supporting it's customers, the big fuss has passed me by without me ever knowing it. In the Netherlands where I lived last winter, it was only tech-people who even knew about it. And here in Spain, where I bought my machine, the people in the Vodafone shop didn't even know they sell the machine. Out of curiosity I asked the Vodafone girl how many devices they had sold, and mine was the second one since it came out. In short: Not so much fuss, but plenty of reason to be less than appreciative at Nokia. That being said: This is a linux-device, meaning a lot of things will have to be fixed by the user itself. That the n900 was not an Ubuntu-like machine was clear to me before I even got it.

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

I think Android only adds to the competition in the smartphone industry - and that' s gotta be a good thing.

I bet all our good friends working on Meego and all the guys at Apple will be working hard to ensure their OS's offer something competitive and distinctive.

I still favour Maemo, but I keep on looking at other offerings. At least I know I made the right choice for my needs and interests.

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

The amount of stuff you hear about Android is directly proportional to the size of the phone-geek within you ;) So if you are bored, maybe its time to do some other stuff?

Android is becoming large simply because there is nothing else at the moment. But Windows and Symbian will strike back, and both OS'es have real advantages over this Linux/java hybrid in terms of efficiency. And there is Bada and soon to come Meego.

For some reason both Android and the iPhone reminds me of the moped of a long lost neighbor; lots and lots of noise, but totally out of proportion to the real benefits, or even to the popularity.

In the end, Samsung and Nokia will win this "race", and they will win it with Bada and Symbian.

the most annoying thing about Android is the update system , I mean yea i dont like iOS but since its only 1 phone its easy to keep up updates Android not so much there are 1.5 1.6 , 2.1 and 2.2 ... that's one of the reasons i wont buy Android oh and operators like to install bloatware on it too...I would love toI have pure vanilla system just to play with it...oh Nexus One :)

Symbian's future rests heavily in the hands of Nokia, regardless of whom else uses it. Bada is Samsung-exclusive and is likely their replacement for Symbian on the low-end devices.

Not in the high end, which is where all the attention is. I suspect that all the high end OSes will trickle down into lower end devices as hardware capabilities increase in all tiers.

I don't think there will be much difference. What is "high end" anyway. After Samsung and SE started selling "low-end" Android with essentially equal specs to that of "high-end" devices, the high end devices HAS to do more than Android. The Only Bada phone today is a high end phone, at least when looking at price.

The attention is on "high end" in the blogosphere only and not at all in proportion to the real world. It is like picking up a car magazine reading about all the million dollar super-sportcars and believing you can use that to relate to what kind of cars manufacturers should produce to make money. Ferrari and Porsche are nice cars, but it is only Mazda with their MX-5 that makes money on sport cars. The real money is in family cars.

im a massive fan of nokia. i know they have the attention span of a goldfish when it comes to updates fixes and alike. but they are a company. and a companys sole aim. is profit!. how much money do nokia make if you buy a second hand n900? zero!. thats right zero!. so put yourself in there shoes. they wont you to buy the most current model. thus a mobile phone these days has a 1yr shelf life tops! its all about the community. nokia's community is by far the best out there! in every way. maemo and symbian. i mean my n900 absolutly rules period. but imagine the n900 minus all the repositorys. all you have is ovi! nuffsaid and since some super clever chaps have ported droid to a nokia device. and anyone who chooses to use it. me being one. am now part of the android community aswell. and thats what its about bringing people together. peoples opinions differ and thats where the magic lies. there are things that android has to offer that maemo only dreams about at night.market store vs application manager! but other than that its well.......basic really. ive gone off the point havent i. no im not sick of hearing about android!. iphone YES. but droid never!!!!!:D

A company that has lost massive market value and some reputation as well. A company that had the bullseye in its sites and the means to shoot the target but did not pull the trigger or even aim in the correct direction for a long time. So yes the bottom line is the bottom line we get that, but you have to do things to make your customers loyal and happy to keep leadership positions. By that logic, they should scrap Meego 6 months after its release and try to get everyone to switch to a new os...

Yes, I completely agree!

I'm very tired of reading Android blah-blah everywhere. Android is bloatware, it doesn't even have a proper logo, and it has an awful UI. And most of the Android phones are very ugly.

I'm also tired of seeing every second guy in this forum opening a thread "hey, I've bought [random android device], and it is sooo goood". These threads should be simply deleted or merged together. This is a Maemo forum and not an Android forum after all.

Re: how tired are you of hearig about android?

Android 2.2 runs great and no longer slowed by java layer, not to mention full Flash that plays movies and TV shows through Flash, perfectly. Heck, Flash Lite on 2.1 blew my N900 away, but Flash 10.1 and Froyo is far better than I thought it could be. Even emulators including PSX perform better with Froyo.

I will continue using my N900 as my main music and MAME player, since still king for those functions, but that is it. For a phone sized device, nothing yet is better than the N900 for those functions.

Then do you feel the same about all of the MeeGo banter? It's not Maemo... it's something different.

Face it; some of you people are upset about the absolutely wrong things. So territorial over people talking about an OS that can be installed on existing N900 hardware and has allowed others to see: on that very same hardware Flash 10.1 is viable, shows an alternative market place actually works.

What you should be tired of hearing is the vacuum that's coming from Nokia in regards to PR1.3, future fixes and updates and lack of information about much anything Maemo based.

Wonderful OS, Nokia's too damn silent about. So people are tinkering with Android, it's the competition. To not to want to hear about the competition... I just find that amazingly odd.

Oh well. Avoid those threads. They're real easy to spot.

I am incredibly close to pulling the trigger on an xperia x10 mini pro. I thought this phone would follow me for years and had great potential. But nokias widgets, email client, calendar/task manager, maps, music player. Has been such a letdown I am trying not to spend money on a new phone and wait for Nitdroid n900 project to be complete.
Running android, overclocked woyuld make n900 the superphone and communicator it was supposed to be.

I have lost all faith in Nokia being able to deliver the goods when all the closed apps on this phone are such massive failures.
They simply don't have what it takes.

I would seriously rethink that Sony Xperia purchase. Last years' hardware, only guaranteed an update to 2.1 from 1.6, awesome camera though; however I'm on the fence with the rest. Especially the fact it has - I think - only 384mb of RAM and basically 1gb internal + microSD whereas the Samsung Galaxy S has 512mb RAM and 16gb internal + microSD.

And the newer phones around the corner improve on that - Sony phones inclusive.

No multitouch as well. The Samsung Galaxy Q looks good (blackberry android with 3.0 screen, 1Ghz, 720*480).
